Michael Phelps

Even if it is true, I have to give it a big, fat Who Cares.

A young kid smokes pot - ooooh, what news. Color me shocked. Not.

I did it. Most of the people I know did it. Big whup.

:thumbsup2 I agree. Big deal. No one would have cared if he had been sipping a Crown and Coke. What is the difference?

A crown and coke is not illegal. Pot is, last I checked. I'm not saying I have anything against pot-smokers. I'm just stating the fact that it is illegal.

Be that as it may, I think I can count one hand the number of people I know who haven't smoked it. It may be illegal but it sure is as common as drinking.

I find it pretty bad that this is more offensive to our society than his DUI was. Both are illegal, one is really likely to kill somebody. Yet the weed offends everyone and is seen as the big blow to his image

So? Find me an intelligent person who thinks it is rightfully illegal. Sometimes laws are just stupid and meaningless. This is one of them. It says right in the article that "As he basked in his hero status, Phelps knocked back beers and shots of spirits. And when a student offered him the glass bong engraved with red writing, he did not hesitate, says our source."

Where are the pics of him drinking? To have his career ruined over politics is so stupid. I really fail to see the difference between drinking and smoking pot except that drinking is worse yet somehow more acceptable.

Leave the poor guy alone. Who cares if he took a bong hit. Find me a US president who didn't.

Tell me about it. My sister's BIL is on his 4th DUI, 2 different states btw.

His last one almost killed a grandma, grandpa, and their grandson.

Her MIL let her drunk son drive her car daily.

Like I said, I'm not bashing pot smokers. I personally don't think it should be illegal. But the fact remains that it is illegal. That's all I"m saying. I personally think the DUI is worse. I have a brother in law that died because of a drunk driver. I'm just aswering why some people are all upset about this story. Pot is an illegal drug and that is why people are upset. Frankly, I could care less if Michael Phelps is getting high.

Oh, and too bad he was wearing a shirt in that picture.:thumbsup2

No- I hear you. It just urks me is all. There is not one bit of logic behind it. Damn lemmings.

I don't understand why athletes are so often held to a higher standard than others. They have a special skill and that's great but otherwise they're just people. People tend to make bad choices and it doesn't seem to matter if they're athletes, ditch diggers or whatever, it happens.

I've always taught our son that stars are just simply people with a skill that for some reason some people idolize. That's it.

Did you have multi million dollar endorsements at the time?
I think that it's nuts that people paid him millions of dollars to endorse their product and said so before. I don't begrudge him the money. I just think it is nuts that so many people would buy a product because someone they don't know suggests they buy it. Even if he swims well. Even if he swims very, very well.

I didn't think his ability to swim made him better or worse than anyone else and I don't think his pot smoking does, either.

If you buy into the glister and open the box to find worms, you have only yourself to blame.

People shouldn't allow themselves to get so attached to someone they never met that they feel disappointment when that person does something of which they don't approve.

I would not be suprised at all if it is him. :guilty:

A couple of months ago I read several accounts of him getting super high and trashing his hotel room when they were honoring him at a U of M football game. That was supposedly the first time he had done it. He destroyed the TVs in the room and he had to replace them. The stories were quickly quashed by his people tho.

It makes me so sad for him and the kids that look up to him. He has been my biggest crush for like 5 years now and it just breaks my heart. :sad2:

I hope you're not trying to insinuate that getting high makes you trash things..I don't do it myself, but I know MANY people who do and never once have I even seen people who are high try to trash anything. If anything it would have been drinking that did that too him, not pot.

Michael Phelps is a young man who will be paid millions for his endorsement of products. His endorsement is credible if he has a "clean" image. Hopefully, he learned a lesson. Sounds as if he is not handling his success well.

The only person he hurt by this is himself. He has plans to swim in 2012 but, from what I read, if he is caught with a banned substance he will serve a 4 year suspension.

Hopefully, this is a wake up call for him.

I disagree with the bolded part. Celebrities are PAID to endorse stuff. Takes the credibility away when you know the person is being paid to say it.

Pay me a miilion dollars and I'll publicly announce that I love broccoli. Hell, give me ten bucks and I'll say it. But you'll never catch me eating the stuff.

Plus, again, buying something because someone you don't know at all says you should...it's stupid.

You can count me in that list.

I just remember during the Olympics this past summer, Phelps was the toast of the Dis. Those who dared to bring up his DUI were reamed over coals. The majority here thought he learned from his mistakes. Many folks here were certainly idolizing him. I know there are more than a few here disappointed in Phelps behavior.

Personally, I don't care what he smokes. It's good to know that this "super hero" is human too. However, even if a parent does not encourage his/her children to look up to celebrities, it does not mean that they won't. Phelps was put up on a pedalstal this year.

Also, I guess I am in the minority here, but I never tried pot.:lmao:

Of course they're paid to endorse stuff but you haven't seen too many commercials with Michael Jackson or OJ Simpson lately. Their credibility is a perception and without a "clean" image noone is going to pay them to endorse anything.

Okay decapitating somebody is totall different than smoking pot. So is getting small children drunk then molesting them, and hanging a baby out a window, slowly removing your nose, and arguably going insane....I don't think I even know all the things Michael Jackson did to ruin his career:rotfl: The celebs that totally ruined their careers either did something really terrible or stopped doing good work within their career. Hell even Pee Wee herman had some TV parts in the last few years.

Honestly I don't think this will really hurt him. If anything it might change the type of endorsement deals he gets. Kate Moss certainly wasn't hurt by her drug use....and she was doing cocaine which isn't even in the same league imo. Then there is Robert Downey Jr, he's come back from drug use how many times; and he was down enough that it actually hurt his job performance. If you are talented or interesting enough you can overcome these things.
