I think he got the dope from Obama's brother and smoked it at the birth of Sarah Palin's grandchild. The story was kept under wraps because it was Rush Limbaugh that turned Phelps onto the Obama brother dope connection. In an odd unifying moment, Ariana Huffington, passed a doobie to Rush and they both agreed that it was in the best interest of the US to keep the the image of Phelps a pure one. Unfortunately Reverend Wright was present and said there was not good to this union and leaked the pictures to the papers and exclaimed "God Bless America?No! Gosh darn America."

I would not be suprised at all if it is him.

A couple of months ago I read several accounts of him getting super high and trashing his hotel room when they were honoring him at a U of M football game. That was supposedly the first time he had done it. He destroyed the TVs in the room and he had to replace them. The stories were quickly quashed by his people tho.

It makes me so sad for him and the kids that look up to him. He has been my biggest crush for like 5 years now and it just breaks my heart.

ITA. He's a young man- it's been known to happen before! I'll bet the vast majority of adults have at one time or another tried pot, had alcohol before their 21st birthday, etc. We grew up fine. He'll be OK.

Tell your DS that sometimes people do dumb things- doesn't make MP's athletic achievements any less- just maybe makes him not someone little kids should be looking at as a role model for anything other than sports.

I don't know if that's him in the picture or not but back in 2005, he came to our local elementary school to talk to the students. From what I heard, the appearances were part of his community service work related to his 2004 arrest for driving while impaired.

Don't care. My son swims for the president of USA swimming and I'm sure we'll get the dope on it.....(pun intended). The last time I looked, Phelps was human and may not be handling fame and fortune very well. I'm sure I wouldn't either.

I know my shortcomings and I assure you, I'd be partying my brains out had I done something so spectacular. Not to mention the fact that for the first time in years I would be able to skip a swim practice if I chose to. Swim practices are purgatory. Trust me...we've been doing them for years.

Well, you had to have seen this coming. He's practically been living in Las Vegas surrounded by hot babes 24/7. While I have no problem with a man his age smoking pot, I also have no problem with the companies he's paid to represent letting him go.

BTW, I don't buy the "living it up after relentless training" excuse. If he's chosen to walk away from the people who kept him grounded, then that's his fault. We've seen enough disasters with pro athletes and child stars to know the dangers of too much, too soon. Plus, there are plenty of athletes that didn't get in trouble after the Olympics.

Way off topic, but it's funny how Ryan Lochte seems more Jeff Spicoli when all along...

I think alot of parents of teenagers who think their kids have never and would never.....are probably a tad naive.

I am not sure that if it is him, but I never thought him to be a flawless human being. He went on to win the gold over and over after his DUI a few years prior.

He still is a young kid with alot of pressures, and hopefully this is showing that he is just blowing off years of steam from his once strictly regimented life and not showing his new career path.

Its the news of the world not even worth sticking at the bottom of a cat litter tray, just ignore it. Its trash and probably not even true, they do tend to get sued a fair bit.

Someone who witnessed one of the largest figures in sport smoking dope won't come forward because they may have to admit to second-hand smoke inhalation? You would have to beat those witnesses off with a stick. Fame is a powerful draw....

Is second-hand smoke inhalation illegal? Just what would they being admitting to? I agree, they'd squeal like a stuck pig!

My point was, that if one is present and illegal activity is going on, one might not come forward then (or even *ever*) because maybe everyone there was toking up a storm or perhaps just some guilt by association ("Everyone else was doing stuff, but honestly Mom, I didn't touch it.") That's all. Of *course*, many folks today worship notoriety and would go for interview/pay-offs. I was just trying to think of a credible reason this "news" didn't come out until *now*. Doesn't the delay between the alleged act & the 'news' strike any one else as odd?

And why would it go to News of the World first? Why not some American slime-merchants - TMZ et al?
