Metro New Orleans DISers - check in!!! - 03/2009

Tricia I am so sorry about your pictures.

Florfauna I'm so excited for you and your hubby. 20 years, that's great.

Lori - WCC and Ohana are a must. DD loves those 2 restaurants.

Ok the inevitable happened today at work. I had a melt down with my boss. We were discussing things and then we started talking about me and how I have been. She mentioned she's noticed a change in me and her concern over my continuous dr apptmts. Well I started bo-hooing uncontrollably. :sad1: :sad1:She consoled me and assured me i was not alone in my feelings of uncertainty over the move to Jackson especially after the prolonged delay. I mentioned I am having second thoughts about the move and would like to start looking for something else internal. We discussed the thought of me taking a brief leave from work to get myself back on track. I am so torn right now. I know i need to do what's best for me and my family however i do not want to be blackballed at work.:confused3....i think i need to increase my medication dosage. :sad1:

wow - feel like I fell into a food thread!! :rotfl: Miss G went to a friend's and decided to stay over

Tusker House for last meal of AM was awesome...or earlier if you want to be halfway in the park by time of rope drop. incredible offerings. so is Cape My Cafe at Beac h Club. both character meals, great variety of food and just yum!

Le Cellier is the ultimate best - prob cause so hard to get. cheese soup is to die for - but you can order it to go! the desserts are great too!

1900 Park Faire is an incrediblel dinner buffet - also character (Cinderalla, prince and stepmother/sisters) they serve prime rib, incredible desserts (uh I am into desserts at Dis!) yet kids can get mac and cheese...first time we went there after that thing....they were making bananas foster. made me very teary eyed as I had to go all the way to WDW to eat my fave dessert and at the time couldnt' get it here...

allears has all the menus updated - I have picky eaters too, so that is why we don't go to narcooses or cali grill. sigh. one day will go without them and eat where I like.

but most places are real cool regardless. hidden and awesome counter servce- pepper market at Coronado. Kona was great for dinner but lunch was kind of blah. Chef Mickey just isn't all that anymore but G must have those fond memory things and insisted on going for her birthday last year. still so many places haven't tried though.

I am happy for all you planning trips, (yay Mary!) yet sad I can't at this time! if the refinancing goes through, however, I just may spring for Thanksgiving...I so want to go during F&W fest...maybe next year...

Serena - and call me if you need to...

so my brother went to the hospital a few days ago..they just dumped him out on the street and stopped his medications he was taking. although I suspect the meds were what made him go off. enough said and he is in surprisingly good spirits. he is at a homeless shelter in CA. it's in God's hands and know something good will come out of all of this...just keep him in your prayers

I am still procrastinating for this conference THURSDAY. pray I get on the ball and get it all together tomorrow!

Yes. Our writing rubrics are color coded by "element" (for example, the story has a good beginning) and we are supposed to put a dot of that color in their story where we see "evidence of the element". Okay...I get it. Green dot for a beginning. Black dot for an ending. Purple dot if they write about the character's feelings. I do not understand WHY this took 2 hours.

I don't get it? Is this really an effective way to teach writing skills? I guess I shouldn't be surprised, based on your other stories. ;)

We are actually studying the Battle of New Orleans and I came up with a few pre-field trip activities. (going to the Battlefield for a picnic) cool, you'll be headed my way :thumbsup2Logan requested to do more than required. That floored me, but that is his interest. He is comparing and contrasting the song to the historical event, Writing a page paper on Jordan Noble, the drummer boy and making a map that recreates the British Route from Jamaica to Chalmette on a cake... Fletcher decided to go the pirate route and study Jean Lafitte's role... no shock there. :surfweb: They are also a lot more fun to be around when they have a direction to go, might have to do this next year too.

This sounds so cool. I am jealous I never had such great projects in school. Once in 5th grade I had to do a project on West Virgina. The heck do I care about West Virgina? :confused3 I was completely unmotivated. In 13 years, I think we discussed the Battle of New Orleans ONE TIME. And can you believe we never field tripped to the battlefield? So many missed opportunities. :sad2:

Update on the possible WDW trip-still not 100%. A lot depends on what in the world we'll be doing at the time and a new budget with new incomes. We are not quite where we thought we'd be, and won't go if it is even iffy, but DH said don't cancel it till we have too-he has dreams of doing RRC a few times this year! My balance is due July 30th and ADR's have to be made next week!
Lori

I'm hoping you get to go. Seems like everything has been bittersweet news for you lately. Hoping something just plain old "SWEET" can happen!

We took the boys last weekend. It was great! Typical of Disney-Pixar stuff, they had me sniffling when I least expected it (yea, I'm a sap). I also got a kick out of the different crowd reactions. My boys & the younger kids were laughing at the slapstick stuff, while the older crowd was guffawing at some of the geriatric humor. Squirrel! Are y'all doing the 3D version?

Where can you see the 3D version?????

Drumming on the armrests, the back of the seats, pretty much anything! Just to think, just a few short years ago it was The Wiggles & Disney CD's....now it's Classic Rock. Any guesses how funny it is to hear an 8yo belt out Living on a Prayer, Eye of the Tiger, Aerosmith....all the stuff DH & I used to listen to?!? He's a shower-singer, too - quite the entertainer!:rotfl:

That's cracking me up just picturing it. :lmao: Though I have to say I MIGHT give him a run for his money with Aerosmith involved. I can do a WICKED Steven Tyler squeal. ;):rotfl: I can even do Axl Rose as Steven Tyler. :thumbsup2

Ok, so I am throwing this out there... I know we talked places to eat a while back, but I am going to go out on a limb and see if any of you jump on this! I am gonna put my dates out there, tell you I am going to only do 4 day PH's, and water parks and more(to do both water parks on 2 days). My length of stay is 6 nights starting September 13(Sunday to Saturday).... I have to book ADR's NEXT Saturday....I have no definite places I wanna go other than using only 1 credit TS meals. Ideas???? suggestions?? I normally enjoy the heck out of planning but maybe b/c no one in my family knows about this except DH and I cannot share the excitement except with you all and a couple friends going at the same time. PLUS, we have never eaten out THIS much on Disney property in 1 trip!!

Lori

I can tell you where we went and what we thought.

Yak and Yeti (1TS) pretty good when we stuck with the "traditional" chinese food, but Tony thought his ribs were dry and my mahimahi was dry

Coral Reef (1TS) absolutely THE best steak (NY strip) I had all week (and I had steak everyday). Atmosphere can't be beat. Lobster bisque is excellent and DO NOT pass up the chocolate wave and the chocolate mousse :::droool:::

Tutto Italia (1TS) pretty good, no complaints from me, Tony actually requested it again for this coming trip. Must try the signature dessert - Bugie

Sci-Fi Dine In (1TS) while the atmosphere is unique and cool, we probably won't go back. Food is only "decent", and it's way weird not being able to see what you're eating. On the plus side a milkshake can count as your dessert or your drink on the dining plan - but it's really just soft serve ice cream with a straw in it. But this was good to know b/c I like soft serve better than regular ice cream and had been disappointed and confused that we couldn't find any - until I realized Disney is calls soft serve by the name "milkshake". Go figure.

Chip and Dale's Garden Grill (1TS) in the Land in Epcot. We both left STUFFED. They bring the platter to your table and all of it is GOOD comfort food. Plus you get Chip, Dale, Mickey and Pluto. Mickey wanted my chocolate milk.

Tony's Town Square (1TS) super cute Lady and the Tramp theme and really good food. Tony RAVED over the ice cream bomb dessert.

This year we want to try Boma, Le Cellier (if we can get in), Crystal Palace, Kona, The Wave and Brown Derby. We'll repeat Coral Reef, Tutto, Tony's and Garden Grill.

I just wanted to share this with ya'll: Husband and I are booked at the Coronado Springs from 9/24-28 for our 20th wedding anniversary!!:cool1: I am very excited about it. We are going to be there for Food and Wine Fest, so if any of you have any helpful hints, I'd apprectiate it.

How cool! We'll be there 9/24 - 10/3, our 6 yr is the 25th. We WERE planning on a carriage ride through Port Orleans, but it looks like we might have to go do Fantasmic! that night (even better!).

I am not sure that the T-Rex is on the dining plan. I thought it was only on the Deluxe Dining Plan like Rainforest Cafe.

It's possible I'm misinformed, but I believe T-Rex and Rainforest Cafe are not participating in the Disney Dining Plan at all.

My parents were looking into genetically making a match. In the end, it was decided that they didn't want a fifth child. We were tested because the Doctor felt there wouldn't be enough time to look for donors should she have relapsed. None of us matched Kelly, however Amy and I are 100% matches so we now both have wills written up to give each other the right to any and all organs and tissues that might be needed at the time. How morbid is that? We do remind each other to take care of our "spares" all the time. That of course is not knowledge that most people have or ever need to know.

I actually find it kind of cool that you two know you match. I don't really think it's morbid at all. Sort of almost brings you closer? I love that you kid each other about taking care of your "spares."

I'm excited for you. Mark and I will make 20 years in October and I want to get away for a long weekend. Since just last week we were at Disney I'm not thinking we'll be back any time soon. Have a great trip. I'm sure the Food and Wine Fest will be great.

Not good news about my pictures. The card came back empty. They weren't able to retrieve any of my pictures. I just feel sick to my stomach over this.

This is rough. Very rough. :sad1: We lost ALL our pictures in Katrina, so I've psychologically detached myself from pictures. It's just SO hard to lose them; it really is like losing a memory.

Guess you'll HAVE to take a trip for your 20th now to replace them. :thumbsup2

Lorie I'm sure Sienna will be fine once the four of you are back in your own home. You have to remember her routine is messed up right now and she's probably just missing you and Todd. Good luck to Erik. I hope the jaundice is getting better and he'll be coming home tomorrow.

I agree. Good luck with everything and try to get some rest. My little bro was born jaundice (and I came out with a sprained shoulder :lmao:) and he's turning 21 in 2 days. :goodvibes

As a healthcare worker, I have heard NOT to specify being a donor, but I soooo want to do it when my time comes. Lori

Can I ask why? (is it dangerous to your personal health?) I marked donor and no living will (that means DNR, right?) on mine. I figure if I'm that far gone, my organs aren't going to be doing me any good anymore anyway. Is that too morbid? Is that too many "any"s in one sentence?

Ok the inevitable happened today at work. I had a melt down with my boss. We were discussing things and then we started talking about me and how I have been. She mentioned she's noticed a change in me and her concern over my continuous dr apptmts. Well I started bo-hooing uncontrollably. She consoled me and assured me i was not alone in my feelings of uncertainty over the move to Jackson especially after the prolonged delay.

 These are tough choices. And no clear "right" answer; you can only do what feels "best" for you and your family.

Facebook is fussin' at me.
It's saying I talk too much.
What does this even MEAN?!? :confused3

:confused3 You should be packing instead? ;)

Tricia I am so sorry about your pictures.

 I think I told you already that DH lived and worked in Baton Rouge during the week and came home on the weekends for a year two years ago. It was not an easy time for any of us. The point was that we were supposed to move there, but I loved my job (and make more money than I would elsewhere) and the kids loved their school so DH finally made an internal jump back to NOLA. I can't tell you what to do, but go with what feels right in your heart.
Facebook is fussin' at me.

It's saying I talk too much. :rotfl:

What does this even MEAN?!? :confused3
It means that you talk too much:rotfl: Only 24 more days to go... maybe facebook knows that you have other things that you could be doing...

I will say many prayers for you brother... that is so sad.

This sounds so cool. I am jealous I never had such great projects in school. Once in 5th grade I had to do a project on West Virgina. Now, I just have to find the battlefield. I am so not familiar with St. Bernard...lol... they goodness I have a GPS.

Coral Reef (1TS) absolutely THE best steak (NY strip) I had all week (and I had steak everyday). Atmosphere can't be beat. Lobster bisque is excellent and DO NOT pass up the chocolate wave and the chocolate mousse :::droool:::

Chip and Dale's Garden Grill (1TS) in the Land in Epcot. We both left STUFFED. They bring the platter to your table and all of it is GOOD comfort food. Plus you get Chip, Dale, Mickey and Pluto. Mickey wanted my chocolate milk.

I am wondering too... my mother told me that I am not allowed to have a DNR... she said they can't save you if you are choking on your dinner in a hospital bed... I think she might be exagerating again... but just in case... I am not agreeing to that!
I am currently watching a gorgeous malamute that reminds me of you since he looks kind of like a white wolf... I will have to take a picture of him before he goes home on Sunday. His owners are currently at Disney World. We agreed to do a dog swap and they will watch ours when we go in November.

I am so sorry my friend. As everyone has said, follow your heart, and do what feels right for you and your family.

We're taking Kyle & Mariah out to Superior Grill to celebrate his birthday tonight. I've never been there, anyone got any favorite dishes there?

Sheryl....if you check in and see this, I hope you're having a FANTABULOUS TIME!!!! :goodvibes

Kathy...I saw on Facebook your beloved Tigers won last night. :thumbsup2

Kristina...I saw on Facebook you got some more good news! And prayers for your brother.

Lorie....how's Erik doing? And Sienna? And you? And Todd? :grouphug:

Serena...I will pray for you for decision making. Hang in there...you can tie a knot at the end of your rope too.

I don't get it? Is this really an effective way to teach writing skills? I guess I shouldn't be surprised, based on your other stories. ;)

:confused3 You should be packing instead? ;)

Please Jamie, it's not about TEACHING them anything. It's about ASSESSING writing skills. But we are not supposed to put the colored dots on the paper by ourselves. We are supposed to do this in a one on one conference with the child so they can SEE and UNDERSTAND what we are doing, and "learn to identify the elements within their writing". Where is the puke smiley? :rotfl2:

Hahahaha I don't even remember what state report I had to do, but I remember in 6th grade I had to do a country report. Know what country I got? St. Vincent and the Grenadines! Never heard of it? Try to find it on a map...it's a tiny dot in the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean. Try to find information on the place...PRE-Internet! :lmao:

I had never even HEARD of the Battle of New Orleans until October of last year when I was IN New Orleans. You never went to the battlefield that is like in your own backyard? :confused3 My friend teaches 3rd grade in Chalmette and they take the kids their every year. She says the highlight of the trip for the kids is rolling down the hill on the levee. :rotfl:

Yes....I will be doing some more packing today. Problem is that it's not JUST PACKING. You see, after 9 months of working so many hours, stuff is a bit all over the place unorganized. So before I can put things in boxes, I have to go through it. :headache: Tedious as all get out. The only stuff I didn't really "go through" was the photos and stuff. That is going to be my July project. Blah.

It means that you talk too much:rotfl: Only 24 more days to go... maybe facebook knows that you have other things that you could be doing...

:rotfl2: I had all these grand plans for today. (This is sounding familiar, no?) I woke up at 5 because the alarm was still set for 5 from the week, but I went back to sleep. I woke up at 8 and STILL went back to sleep. Finally dragged my butt outta bed at 10:24! And I have a migraine to boot. I guess I'll run all the errands (and the looking at cars activity) tomorrow.

I'll stay here and work on paperwork (yes....there's STILL some!) and packing. Makes for an exciting day! :yay: Not.

And Cara, I think you will be able to find the battlefield in St. Bernard without GPS. At least I hope so... ;)

Funny story from yesterday's "Field Day" (We had to stay at school and have it in the gym because of the cold, rainy weather yesterday. And the park's indoor facilities where we were supposed to go had "water on the inside". We think this means they flooded. :confused3)

Anyways...one of the activities was to run down a line of cones zig zag. The guy in charge explained it like "you run on one side of the cone and then to the other, and then to the other..." The kid next to me goes "I don't get it." So I tell him "just run zig zag around the cones." And he goes "huh?" So I say "Just run like an alligator is chasing you." For some reason, THIS is what clicks with him as he goes "Ohhhhhhh, run ZIG ZAG!" :lmao: :rotfl2:
Don't know where he got that from....:rolleyes1

Ok, dumb NOLA girl here, I knew about Jackson Barracks, but there is a battlefied here??? :confused3:rolleyes1

DH JUST told me he used to camp there with boyscouts.

Owell, learn something new every day~~

Lori

Ok, dumb NOLA girl here, I knew about Jackson Barracks, but there is a battlefied here??? :confused3:rolleyes1

Lori

I've seen the sign for one....so I'm assuming it's near the sign...

Although, just because a sign is there does not mean one should assume....:rolleyes1

So a friend of mine from high school is taking a day trip to NYC....on July 2nd. :headache: Guess we won't be seeing each other. :sad2:

 I am currently watching a gorgeous malamute that reminds me of you since he looks kind of like a white wolf... I will have to take a picture of him before he goes home on Sunday. His owners are currently at Disney World. We agreed to do a dog swap and they will watch ours when we go in November.

The Battlefield is really easy to find, and it's really hard to get lost in St. Bernard. I'd love to see a pic of the dog; my mom's going to take care of my "angels" while we're mousing it up in September.

Ouch.

I had never even HEARD of the Battle of New Orleans until October of last year when I was IN New Orleans. History/Social Studies was such a sham throughout my entire educational career. I can't tell you how many Chinese dynasties we studied, in great detail. While I understand where this has its place in the foundation of civilization, I feel like a complete history dunce when it comes to the last 200 years. We did have an American History elective senior year, but most of it was spent studying now defunct political parties. We learned more about the Great Depression reading The Grapes of Wrath in English class than we did in any "history" class.

My "insufficient education" rant aside, the Battle of New Orleans was fought between the US and Britain (we won!) at the end of the war of 1812 (actually AFTER the treaty ending the war was signed, but apparently Andrew Jackson's Blackberry didn't get the message on time). Don't ask me what the War of 1812 was about. Wiki claims it was part of the Napoleonic Wars - which means absolutely nothing to me. I feel so educationally gyped! :sad2:

I have been there several times, as my grandma used to take us there when we were learning to drive. :scared1: Haven't been since Katrina though, but I really should make it out there; Tony's never seen it either (he's a Kenner boy).

Ok, dumb NOLA girl here, I knew about Jackson Barracks, but there is a battlefied here??? :confused3:rolleyes1

Lori

If you are on St. Claude heading east it will turn into St. Bernard Highway. If you're on St. Bernard Highway, you can't miss it. There's not a whole lot to it, but it's still pretty powerful. They used to do a reenactment in January (not sure if it's come back since Katrina). And the Barracks look like they should be almost done being rebuilt. They really are going all out, the gates are impressive. Much better than the concrete dividers they put up after 9/11.

I also had insufficient history education. It really didn't help that 11th grade in the district I was in was the year for American History. When I moved a month into 11th grade, I moved to a district where 9th grade was the American History year.

I suppose I didn't get any Battle of New Orleans information because we never got to the War of 1812. The 9th grade history class moved so slow that by the time we got to semester, we were still at the Revolutionary War. Sooo, according to MY history education, we are still British colonies. :rotfl:

And I only had to take that first semester - twice - because they only saw that I had taken 0.5 credits and made me take another 0.5 credits to get the 1 to graduate. Forget that they were BOTH the FIRST semester...but even taking that part twice, I can't tell you much! And I'm a teacher...:headache:

We're home!!!

We came home yesterday afternoon after an agonizingly long discharging process. We were supposed to be out first thing yesterday morning, but didn't leave the parking garage until 4:30 pm :headache:. An example: we had to wait an hour and a half for the wheelchair to be brought up to leave (you can't leave unless you are wheeled out on a wheelchair :confused3). By 4:30, I was climbing the walls and going crazy- I couldn't wait to get out of there! Otherwise, the hospital experience was very good. The nurses were very nice and helpful.

Everyone is doing fine. Erik is sooo different than Sienna was as a newborn- it is so surprising! He eats and sleeps, that's it! Very easygoing and snuggly. :cloud9: I however, am very befuddled at the fact that I came home only two pounds lighter than I went in- I had an almost eight pound baby...how is that even possible?? I wasn't exactly pigging out on the hospital food either, and was on a liquid diet for part of my stay...very confusing...

Sienna also came home last night and has been good as gold- not sure what was going that day at the hospital. :confused3 She is very excited about her baby brother and always pats his head and kisses him. :lovestruc She always wants to help with him too- it is very sweet.

MIL said Sienna was very good staying there and she showed her off to all of her friends. The only complaint that I have, not complaint really, more of an funny observation, was that she tried to straighten Sienna's hair some kind of way. Yeah, it didn't work, and looked crazy! I think the tried to use some hair product and brush out the curls to straighten it, and she got a big cotton ball head. :rotfl: But MIL was sorry to see Sienna go, so she may be spending more time there in the future since they are such good buddies now.

I'll have to read back now and catch up on everything going on...anything juicy? :lmao:

We're home!!!

We came home yesterday afternoon after an agonizingly long discharging process. We were supposed to be out first thing yesterday morning, but didn't leave the parking garage until 4:30 pm :headache:. so glad it is all going well and Sienna is adapting too! here's praying for continued smooth sailing with everything... :thumbsup2

Hey Lorie! I'll bet it feels good to be home! I'm so glad to hear that Sienna is loving the big sister role, we all knew she would, she's such a sweetie pie. Now that she and MIL are such good buddies you should take advantage of that when you need a break!!! Sounds like Erik is a very good baby.:goodvibes

I wouldn't be too concerned about the weight just yet, the lbs kinda slowly came off for me. I had gained 60 lbs too.:sad2:

Todd will be home for two weeks IIRC? Take full advantage of that too sister.;)

I am happy to hear you made it home safe and sound! I am sure that Sienna will settle into her big sister role quite nicely and Erik is going to be a model baby.

I have been there several times, as my grandma used to take us there when we were learning to drive. :scared1: Haven't been since Katrina though, but I really should make it out there; Tony's never seen it either (he's a Kenner boy)

I am still a few years off of teaching anyone how to drive (THANK GOODNESS), but I will keep that in mind when it gets closer to time... I will be happy to report on its condition when we get back (sometime in the next few weeks)... I did go once before Katrina... the only thing I know for sure is that it is open cause I checked on the website...

Spencer is sick today, but the poor dear is too scared to go back to the doctor, so he won't admit to feeling badly. Lucky for me, his fever ratted him out.

Sheryl, I am so sorry it has been so rainy. I was on the phone with my mother and it was pouring down... I hope that missed you. I hope that you are having a blast in spite of the weather.

Cara, I hope Spencer feels better soon.

Lorie, I'm glad you have your baby home. Erik's picture is so cute. I'm glad Sienna is having a good day too.

We are going to Destin for a few days. We're leaving EARLY tomorrow morning so we can take a tour of Spring Hill College with David.

Ya'll have a good week:goodvibes
