Memorizing the Periodic Table of Elements

I am a high school Chemistry teacher and I can tell you this assigment IS WORTHLESS AND I HATE IT !!!!! Why ? Why ? Why memorize. On any college or AP test they provide you with the table. Any chemist has access to the periodic table. The periodic table is a beautiful thing, magical if you will, and I strive to have students understand why it is what it is, not MEMORIZE IT !!!! UGGGGH !!!!:scared1:

Thank you all for thoughts, ideas and suggestions. I think this will be one of those assignments where we'll just have to drill repeatedly. I also posted this question on the Teen Board, assuming those are the people who have probably recently done this or had experience with this type of assignment. Someone suggested this site:

I think this might help and we're going to give it a try.

DenMig, thank you for your perspective, as a teacher. I also posted on the other thread that I thought this assignment was a little much, especially given the time constraints, but I didn't want to seem like the helicopter parent of a special snowflake. :rotfl: I don't know what the point of this assignment is, but it is what it is. I'm sure this will also give her one less thing to learn once she's in high school, so I'm just going to help and encourage her through it. She got the assignment today and knows the first 4, so only 46 more to learn. :thumbsup2

She isn't even in high school yet and this is the assignment??

I just remember..

Cu Copper (As in, "See you, Cop!")

Au Gold (As in, "Hey you, Gold.")

"He He Helium"

Sodium Na (As in, "Salt? Nah.")

Many of them are very easy... Ne for Neon, O for Oxygen, Al Aluminum... I remember learning the easy ones first, remembering where they were on the table, and then learning the ones like I mentioned above, and then finally the harder ones.

Good luck. I did this in 5th grade and remember it vividly.
