Medical question -- "hollow" bone?

Hey all, got a question regarding my uncle.

The latest chemo treatment did get rid of the leukemia blasts, but they found a spot on his leg that, when tested, proved to be something like a dry hollow bone. I'm not entirely clear on it, I just know that where they expected to find something, all they found was dried blood clots.

Well, that, and a fungal infection, and a staph infection. :/

Just what does that mean? His leg is dying? He needs a marrow transplant? They'll need to amputate?

I tried googling it, but all I get is information on taking marrow samples for testing or how shamans use hollow bones for various ceremonies. :p

Thanks.

My brother has this, after chemo for leukemia he developed hollow spots in the bones near his knees. It is called avascular necrosis, which basically means the section of bone is dead. I'm not clear on the particulars of his treatment, but I know he has had several operations over the past two years and walks with crutches. Our mom is in the process of trying to get him transferred to the Mayo Clinic for more treatment, because our local hospitals don't know what else to do for him. They do not think it is related to the chemo, but really, how can it not be?

Hopefully your uncle will have better luck, I know it is not easy.
