May not be the last we see of the Osborne lights...

Because Osborne was a stubborn man that's why they should get rid of it? I do my own Christmas lights display. While I don't have millions of lights I have around 20,000. All done to music. My neighbors all enjoy what I do. I know of hundreds of people who do such displays and they even have a tv show about it. Also didn't Osborne buy neighboring properties to have a buffer to his lights? It's for just over a month of the year, it's not like it's year round.
Osborne bought neighboring properties in spite of his community to expand his light display for the primary purpose of escalating the aggravation he was causing his neighbors. Since his death in 2011 he's most likely used a periscope every Christmas to see if his garish display is still in operation.

Disney has developed a paying audience for Christmas lights, you can bet Santa's shiny black boots they aren't going to let that go. TDC is more than capable of creating a Christmas light show, and they can surely find a spot for it. Sure it's the last year for "Osborne Lights", but a "Disney" branded light show could well be under wraps.

The Osborne lights were pretty well Disney branded. Yes they have the Osborne lights but many features in the lights featured Disney.

You might be the first one I've heard call them tacky. I really don't agree with you here.

To me the lights were getting outdated and it's time to refresh them into something more modern anyway. I can see a smaller inspired by them display happening at disney springs, who knows what the whole pandora side of things might offer. I think animal kingdom at night is a more prime location to bring in a nighttime holiday light display. Not being open at night before, it opens up a whole new list of options for evening events happening there.

Outdated how? They were LED that's about as up to date as you can get with lights. They also have the light 'tunnel' that shows animations in it. The newest thing in lights are pixels. I don't know how well that would work in this display.

Animal kingdom is no place for a light display like this.

There's a reason for that and Weird Al's song gives the explanation.
That's a little provocative... *

What I'll agree with you on is the Osbourne Festival of Lights is not elegant. It's not as thoughtfully put together as Epcot's old lights, but does that make them ugly or cheap? No.

It's totally different. It's like insulting Avengers, Jurassic World, or Star Wars because they're not Lincoln or Imitation Game. That doesn't make them crap, but does make them a totally different genre.

What most people will remember of Osbourne Festival of Lights is fun, joy, and light. Sure it's not the most elegant thing, but the same could be said of staying at a Polynesian themed Resort in the middle of a swamp in Florida.

I for one will take a little fun ;)

*For those who didn't play the video, the song says something along the lines of if you don't agree all these things are tacky, you're tacky yourself.

Ummm...I've of course seen them many years and times...

And I don't mind the story behind them and Disney adopting them...no problem whatsoever...

But they have always 100% been kinda a tacky/gaudy show and shoved into the back of MGM in a haphazard manner.

They just are not that impressive...and I actually love pretty much all of what Disney does from a decorating front for holidays...

I Was in the holiday warehouse once and it is truly marvelous how it's all done...

But Osborne came about as a comparative low cost way to do a "special" thing as a draw for studios...they aren't gonna weep on any level if this is the end.

Just being honest...not trying to mess with anyone.

The castle is an icon. The Osborne Lights are the result of Jennings Osborne who was inconsiderate of his neighbors by displaying the lights in the first place down in Arkansas. The community had to go to court to shut down the display all because an eccentric millionaire decided to willfully disrupt the neighborhood in which he lived. The Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights represents a very sad situation in which Jennings Osborne was very unkind to his neighbors in direct opposition to the Christmas Spirit. The display had to be shut down by the Arkansas Supreme Court because Jennings Osborne was a very stubborn old man.

Disney should get rid of the display.

Even though the Osbourne family is getting their lights returned, didn't Disney add considerably to the lights over the years? I remember the walkthrough attraction, much prefer it to the current spectacle, but there are a LOT more lights on the SOA now than were ever in the walkthrough, at least there seems to be.

There are plenty of places in Disney Springs to display them, esp. along the banks of the lake. Might not see them right away, but there's a good chance that's where the extra lights will end up. Maybe not as a spectacle, maybe not dancing to music, but just as a holiday display. I was hearing this from DHS CM's too as soon as the last season of Osbourne lights was announced.

I think the only thing the Osborne family is getting back is their name. The original lights would be well over 20 years old and long ago dead. All these LED lights they have replaced the original with are Disney owned. The original setup on Residential Street was no where near what you see today. I saw it. It was a bunch of over the top neighbor designs that were fun and made better with the 3d glasses they gave everyone but no where near the wow factor they do now. The few items that would be a continuation of Osborne-look like the soldiers, globe and carousels, surely are completely different structures. What Osborne has gotten the last two decades is a royalty check. Now that Disney doesn't have to pay them anymore, maybe they will create a new light show of some kind in a new location.

Osborne soldier vs Disney soldier. Kept it close in design but Disney made it's own.

They're Christmas lights and Christmas music, people enjoy both,I'm going to try and do a second Christmas trip to see them again but I was there last week and spent 1 hour and 45 minutes watching the lights and spent the whole time thinking to myself how could they get rid of this.I just think they better come back in some way or form,Osborne branding or not.

I have 5 Christmas trees...you're not gonna have to sell me on decorations.

But that display is less impressive than smaller, not well funded ones that I remember seeing long ago...

I think that a lot depends on what they do in studios...if they're REALLY gonna blow it up (pun...not literally) and build it out after near 30 years of a half failed concept...then the place will be completely different, more crowded, and will need a whole new holiday approach.

The Osborne family was given an inventory list with what they are getting back. A member of the family is actually a member on these boards.

I have a question then. As someone who does their own display to music but of course not with a million lights what makes a Christmas light display impressive? I have seen light displays from all over the country and take ideas from each to my own. Osborne to me was impressive in the amount of lights. I have seen plenty that are done much better to the music but Osborne was all about the number of lights.

Okay, I'll state it different. There may be some things being returned to the family but I'll bank all of that has been sitting in a warehouse collecting dust. Nothing they originally set up looks like what we see now other than inspirational design, like the soldiers I posted. Everything is now LED, vibrant and way more well designed that what was originally used 20 years ago. I don't think it's going out on a limb to say that what was sent 20 years ago, aside from being VERY old by outdoor light standards, is probably so not in code for a commercial show. So unless Disney is going to be nice and give them some of the current decorations that are modeled after the old - I highly doubt anything the Osbornes are getting is anything we've been looking at for years.

Last word.

They might be getting back the frames for the things that were part of the original display like the globe and the toy soldiers like you showed above. All they did to them was replace the lights. The frames are technically still there's I would think.

It's not the size, it's what you do with it. ;D

I'm hoping that Disney has a similar light display in Epcot. We were there last week and not for anything but the Christmas decorations at Epcot were lacking to say the least.
