Well it is the Monday after the cruise and I am going to try to begin a trip report. I beg your patience with what will surely be long missives. The cruise was wonderful and there is so much to share! I am planning on enering these reports into our journals so I want them detailed. If you find them boring please just delete from your email! I will probably do it day by day so you will find more then one entry.
We left Friday right after I got out of work. I practically ran home from the job so that we would have plenty of time to clear security at the airport.
Southwest airlines was great! The lines were not at all long and everyone there was helpful. The flight itself was uneventful (as you want an air flight to be!) We had great crew on the plane! They sang to us and ytold corny little jokes. When DD asked for some more peanuts they brought her ten packages! She was thrilled!
Being the first plane ride for the two children made it a little scary! DS 15 had to be convinced to look out the window! He was glad I forced the issue though. Since we had three stops we all got accustomed to taking off and landing! It is always amazing to me that they can get this huge steel thing up into the air!
When we finally landed in Orlando some six and half hours later we were weary yet excited! We were in Florida! I love Florida! The air was scented with some sort of flower that I love and there were palm trees too!
After a short shuttle ride to our hotel for the night- at the lovely Crown Plaza we asked at the lobby desk about getting some food and were told that there were a nummber of places across the street to choose from. We could see a chilis so that was our choice. Well- "across the street" meant crossing eight lanes of traffic! YIKES! We took a deep breath and braved the highway!
When we awoke in the morning the skys were SO blue! Why is that the sky in Florida seems so endless? Living in New England we get used to a sort of obstructed view but in Florida the sky seems to go forever! Two of us once again took our lives into our hands and crossed the freeway to fetch breakfast while the kids enjoyed watching a vulture devour a bit of armadillo road kill! EWWWW but the kids were fascinated with the ordeal.
Around 7:30 I got a phone call- uh oh....this can't be good can it? DD17 was scheduled to join us this morning. She had to fly in on a seperate flight since her senior prom was Friday night. She was flying Delta- remember that name folks. It was NOT good news. DD had been bumped from her original flight! YIKES! She had been bussed from Providence Rhode Island to Boston to catch a later flight. Now, having a child flying alone is scary enough without DELTA throwing monkey wrenches into the plans. It was unsettling for me and DD was surely beside herself. I was not able to speak to her since DELTA was shuttling her to another state to attempt to get her to the port in time for departure. They did give her taxi vouchers as well as a $200 check. Delta only got worse after this- the return flight for DD was WORSE- way worse. But I am getting ahead of myself.
DD arrived at the port at 4:30 PM. We all were pacing the port- including the Disney staff who were helpful and seemed almost as concerned as we that she make it before the ship pulled out. We missed the muster (and got a little letter from the boat stating how important it was that we know what to do in case of emergency) and worriedly watched everyone else aboard the ship lined up in the life jackets.
We ran onto the ship and then it was time to sail. DD had no idea where her luggage might be since it had gone on the flight that she got bumped from! It turned out that Disney had found her luggage at the airport with the yellow tag that was included in our documents package attached and put it onboard for her! Thank you disney! She actually had her luggage at her room before we did!
We headed up to deeck nine for the cast away buffet. Oh it was yummy! I am surprised that there are any shrimp left in the sea after all I saw consumed that day! They were lovely and tasty and large! YUMMY!
After eating we dropped off the carry on stuff and headed up to deck ten for the sail away! How exciting! After weeks of planning and a day of worrying we were ALL really going to go! Hearing the special ships whistle gave me goosebumps! We were off for a family adventure unlike any we had had before!
We were able to meet up with a few of our friends from the Disney Cruise Forum and that was cool too! We had been chatting with these people for weeks now as our excitement built and being able to put a face to a name was fun! I have a number of chat friend from other sites fow a few years. I have tried to get us together for a face to face meet but it has never worked out. I am glad it did this time!
after some unpacking- and yes- you do HAVE to unpack since there is no room in the staterooms to "live out of your suitcase" We hung up our over the door shoe hanger thingie and quickly filled it with countless small items that would have been cluttering up the tops of every surface if we didn't have it! This was by far the number one tip that I got from these boards! NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT AN OVER THE DOOR SHOE HANGER THINGIE!
We all headed down for the welcome aboard show. It was fun and informative. They had this really funny juggler- I never saw him again on the trip but I hear he was around. We got to meet Rick for the first time- he was our cruise director. I want his job!!
Then it was back to the rooms to change for dinner. We ate at Lumieniers the first night. What a lovely place. Our server was Sylvester and his assistant was Joel. What a great team they were! They made each nights meal special and enjoyable. They quickly learned our names and drink preferances. By the end of the week they would become our friends. Sylvester was from India and Joel was from the Phillipines. They were both so kind and helpful to my children. really catered to their every want and desire. That can be a rather overwhelming task with three teens!
The teens all heade to Common Grounds for the first meeting. Two out of three were excited about the happenings scheduled for the week. More on the third teens reaction later....
It had been anexhausting day so it was an early to bed night. We were on the sixth floor aft and it was a great spot! Quiet and conveniant to everything. The secret deck on aft seven was lovely. Hardly ever anyone there. A great place to sun and relax for a few minutes between the activities. There was sooo much to do and I missed many things that I wanted to do! But for now- this day was over , it was time to sleep a bit and get ready for our first full day at sea! So much to look forward to!

Wow...I would have been a nervous wreck if my DD was bumped and did not get to the ship until 4:30!!!! Did DCL hold a bus at the airport for her or did she have other transportation??

Another wow...you had three stops on a flight from New England to MCO??? A trip that should take no more than 3 hours on a direct flight really turned into a long flight for you guys!!!

Thanks for sharing and can't wait to read the next installment.

There's a guy here at work that makes fun of me for flying "lesser" known airlines then Delta - which is king in Georgia. But he's lost his luggage twice and had his flights cancelled. I've NEVER been bumped or had a problem with my flights - except that one minor problem of one of them going bankrupt!! But luckily it was far enough in advance I could rebook and I had charged it and got my money back!

Anyway - can't wait to hear the rest!

I would have had a breakdown with that beginning. I'm also flying Delta-wish me luck.
I enjoyed your trip report and can't wait for part 2. Thank you.

If you are flying delta you better plan on arriving in Orlando at least the day before your cruise. No joking! Everyone I have spoken to about my DD's travel plans with Delta has had similar horror stories. I would hate to see anyone miss their cruise because Delta insists on overbooking EVERY flight and is constantly changing thier schedules. Travelling as a family gives you a little bit more security since apparently they bump single travelors most often. DD had a horrendous time getting home- even worse then the flight down. They bumped her AGAIN and she had to stay overnight this time since there were no more flights that evening. Imagine if this had happened when she was on her way down for the cruise!!! She would have missed the whole cruise!!!! Pklease stay on top of them- check often for schedukle changes. I heard of one woman on the boards who has already had her flight changed FOUR times and her trip is still a month away!
I hate to add more stress to your life but better that yo9u are aware then be sideswiped by delta.
I now believe that DELTA stands for " Don't Ever Let 'Em Arrive (on time)
You will be in my thoughts- I do wish you luck- when is your trip?

I was telling my cruising buddy about your daughter's Delta problem, and she said Don't you remember, I also was bumped and came in late. The only good thing, is I erased my message from my cell phone, and called Delta and the rep looked her up on the computer to find out which flight she was on and if she was on it. She was, her sister was delayed out of Atlanta, so we spent some time looking for each other. Luckily we flew in the day before. (I thought I had a job in Florida, so they booked before me, since I thought I would be living there, I came in on a different flight.). Anyway I will not fly Delta, and will be telling all my friends and family.

Delta is bad news. I live in Montgomery AL and have waited out at the little airport 3 times now (in the past 8 mths since we moved here) for delayed flights, 2 of which they decided to bus. If people wanted to ride a bus they would pay the lower fare to ride Greyhound  !! We would absolutely avoid Delta but my DH is military and Delta wins most of the contracts for military travel (on the job). Delta is NOT getting any of my personal business that is for sure. So sorry your DD had to go through all of that, my stomach got nervous just reading about you waiting to board. You are a trooper!

Looking forward to the rest of your trip report!
I fly Delta all of the time and have always had no problems with them. My girlfriend is a flight attendant with Delta, so we fly frequently on buddy passes. Every airline overbooks their flight, every airline. I can't begin to tell you how many times we have flown with other airlines and either been bumped or they have requested that people voluntarily give up their seats, especially on American Airlines. It is industry practice to be able to oversell the flights as there are plenty of times that the flights are overbooked and then fly half full. The flights to Florida, especially Orlando are the worst. My advice is to call the airline that you are booked on and ask for a head count. They will be able to tell you if their are any seats left or if the count is in the negative numbers. If the count is tight, simply make sure you get to the airport plenty of time ahead of your time.

We're on the June 28 Magic. Just checked today and our flight was changed. It is leaving an hour and a half later and they never informed us. Thank God we are arriving a day earlier. I just hope going home isn't a problem. My husband would be in lots of trouble if he missed another day of work. I'm not going to think about it YET!

My DH and my DD (7) and I were on the cruise too. A special thanks to Jim our limo driver from "Youride" he was great! We had cabin 6130 on the Magic with a verandah and a fabulous view. The weather was just perfect the entire trip. The water temp at each port was great. We had the best food and the best service. Our servers were Arvid (India) and Collin and Beata, they did a superb job. We had Palo's brunch (excellent) and also dinner at Palo's (we got beeped from the kids club) so dessert was take out, but the food was very well prepared and the presentation was done very nicley. We did the butterfly farm in St. Marteen and I lost some $$$ in the casinos, but DH won $250 so I'm happy and we did the tram in St. Thomas (both were good opportunities to get a view of the land and the breath taking water views). Shows were great as usual, won a nice disney carry on bag at Bingo. Mickey pool was very crowded, but......other than that loved the entire trip. Formal nights were great although we did see a guy in Palo's one night in a tacky wrinkled T-shirt. I agree the hang over the door idea was so good that I bought one and one for the cabin closet to put our shoes in. Disney Island was great, food was okay. Wasted money on soda mugs, they were flat most of the time, so we had room service bring cans ($$$). All in all perfect trip, so we booked another for same time next year and we reserved the same cabin!

So we were neighbors!! We were in room 6133- across the hall from you apparently!
Was Austin your room steward too? I found him to be lacking in a few areas. We seldom had ice even though we oft requested it and left a full wine bottle in the ice cooler as a hint. Also forgot to change toilet paper and other minor sorts of annoyances. Forgot o9ur water glasses often too- although that may have had something to do with the fact that we kept taking them out of the room filled with our beverages!
Just a minor inconvenience on an otherwise spectacular trip! Did we have the best weather or what? And CC was perfect- the water, the sky- it was like Disney had a hand in creating a perfect day for us! It was rather surreal!

Yes, Austin was our room steward too! He made some nice towel animals for our daughter and he did a great job of keeping our room free of clutter. My daughter ordered room service several times a day, everyday, because she could not find anything she really liked except the chicken strips. She would order double orders and peel off the breading and just eat the chicken. It made a terrible mess on the carpet, but Austin kept the crumbs to a minimum. Also in his defense we were in and out of the room alot. I think we got him off his routine schedule. Otherwise you're right the weather and the seas were just picture perfect!

All 5 of my past flights for DCL have been with Delta. Yes, there have been some problems along the way - like losing our personalized luggage straps; breaking wheel from new rollalong luggage, putting a 250 lb PLUS individual next to a 180 lb man and expecting him to be in his seat and/or comfortable, changing "equipment" (the plane) and not keeping us together as a family and the worst..........

Changing the flight times and not telling us.

Jeanne434's daughter went through the worst possible case scenario and there is/was NO excuse for it. From any airline. Thank you Jeanne for warning us about this!!!

If it wasn't such a hassle to drive, I'd leave a few days earlier and forget the airline completely.
