May 2011: The Year of Surprises! [TR]

Wow, what a great experience! Maya would have loved that!

As for your comments on your dh - they weren't anything bad. It was just your snippets about his listening skills. Just made me smile because I've had many a similar Disney conversation with my DH!

I highly recommend the Story experience! Looking forward to it next year!

I'm so glad that this boat is starting to get full. I enjoy company. :lmao:

Just wait. So far, this has been nothing. :rotfl2:

Before I comment on the missed update and the latest one, I HOPE YOU ARE HAPPY!!!! I was able to change Mama Melrose to 50's Prime Time! :lmao::lmao: Yes, it is all your fault! And I told Mark we are not reading any more of your dining reviews.

Love hte first update with the review of Tony's (yes, I did glance at that one) and the food looked really good. Love the pics of the kids with Cinderella.

How cool that the kids got to sit and have a story read by Mary Poppins. I wish my kids had that opportunity when they were younger.

Sorry about Crankypants. I would have just said, "the heck with you...all of you stay here and I'll go to the parks by myself."

Glad you got to meet Anakin and his mom. :)

Comments to "Thanks for the lack of Dole Whips":

We kept trying to find a place that offered the Dole Whips, but never did get one. I did have a Pineapple margarita at the Mexico restaurant in Epcot and wasn't too impressed with it. Not sure if I would have like the dole whip either.

Your dinner at Tony's looked great. I have heard many negative things about that place, but after your pics, I think I would definitely try it. :thumbsup2

The princess pics were so cute. Glad to hear that they were so interactive and cannot wait to see your PP pics.

Your DS beard looked so real in the pics. :rotfl: Glad the make up came off so easily.

Looking forward to reading about Cranky Pants....:lmao:

We left off playing in the Norway store, no word from our WoW friends, and the mystery of someone getting a time out. I also want to add ... I have a ticker again! It's still tentative, but we have our dates and hotel picked out. You'll have to wait for the next PTR to hear any of this. I've priced out "worst case" using rack rates and estimated cost of things, and the numbers don't look too bad. If finances get too rough, I have ways to cheapen up the trip as well. Is it bad that I'm already planning out my next PTR and I haven't finished my TR yet? Ack!

While playing in Norway, we found the Kidcot station. So the kids sat down to color their own Duffy.

Disney2011pictures215.jpg

We didn't have much time, as I didn't want to be late for our lunch at Teppan Edo, and I knew they'd want to make other stops along the way. So I promised the kids they could colore more at the next station.

We came to Germany, and I pointed out where we'd be having dinner that evening. Of course, we had to stop and watch the trains.

It was nearing time to check in, so I called for the kids to come along. DD came quickly, but DS didn't want to leave.

Disney2011pictures221.jpg

After several attempts, we told him goodbye and we'd miss him and pretended to walk away.

Disney2011pictures222.jpg

Disney2011pictures223.jpg

He came running pretty quickly. lol

On our trip around the WSC from Norway to Japan, we encountered several smokers. I mean, really? (Okay, let me backtrack, we encountered one on our walk to the entrance as well.) DD has asthma and the last thing she needed was for some JERK to trigger an attack. I have nothing against smokers at all (I used to smoke) ... but Disney has DSAs available for smoke breaks for a reason. They want all walks to enjoy their parks - those who smoke and those who can't be near smoking. Each time, I'd grab DD, cover her face and steer her away. And if it was you who was smoking near my child, I don't apologize for my behaviour and the horrible things I said about you and your parents.

Seriously ... the least you can do is hide away from other people. Just because its outdoors doesn't mean its okay.

OH ... whose soap box did I borrow? I think you can have it back now.

We checked in for our 12:00pm ADR. They said that at 12:00, they'd open the doors. Uhm ... so much for arriving early. We popped in to the Japan Kidcot and let the kids color some more. We decided to check a few minutes before 12 if the doors were open (they were) and check in.

We got to watch their little opening ceremony. It was nothing flashy, but the entire staff of Teppan Edo and Tokyo Dining come out and line up (Teppan on the left, and Tokyo on the right). They basically welcomed everyone and thanked them for coming and declared the place open. (If you haven't been to Teppan/Tokyo, they share the same building with each restaurant taking one side.) Once the ceremony was over, the staff returned to their positions and our pager went off. There was exactly 9 people in the Teppan waiting area, and we were sat with the other 5. We have hibachi style places at home, so it was very expected.

The other family was very sweet. As the hostess introduced everyone and let us all know we'd be dining together, we all greeted each other with "hellos" and "nice to meet yous". The dad was celebrating his birthday (I was nice enough to not ask which one - I'll just assume it was the anniversary of his 29th). The family drove from ... gosh, I don't recall where from, but it was a lengthy drive. They were on their last day and leaving out (that night or the next morning). The teenage son was the one who initiated the start of conversation. Typically we just keep to ourselves, but he was a very social teen, and it was nice to meet friendly faces. We did visit off and on through dinner. I did not get many pictures.

The server asked if any food allergies, and I said that DD can't have milk. Immediately a manager comes out to the table. She wasn't overly happy to be there, but she wasn't rude about it. She said that DD was fine having anything on the table, but the chef would only give her one of the sauces since the others had heavy cream in it. Fine with us! DH wanted the swordfish, but they said they were out. So instead, he got the steak and shrimp. So did I. I had the iced Green Tea to drink. Both kids got shrimp.

Disney2011pictures224.jpg

Disney2011pictures225.jpg

The biggest difference between Teppan Edo and our local hibachi place? The chef was sooo much nicer at Teppan. SOOOO much nicer! He was very friendly, smiled the whole time, made sure to look at everyone. While his show was nothing we haven't seen at home, the experience itself was better.

As far as the food goes, it was okay. Nothing different than what we have at home. Well ... there is one difference. I don't know the name of the sauces, but the two brown ones - MUCH better than home; the light colored one - awful. I was so disappointed. It's the sauce that I always pour over my entire plate and beg for more at home. I tried it. I tried it several times. But I ended up not eating it. I did, however, love the brown sauces though, both of them were good - especially the middle one.

When it came time for dessert, they brought out a dessert for the dad in the other family to wish him a Happy Birthday. We all cheered!

I ordered the Chocolate Ginger Cake. I wasn't sure about this - as I don't like for my chocolate to be messed with, and I was afraid the ginger would be ick.

Disney2011pictures226.jpg

Doesn't it look so yummy????? Boy was it! Mmmmmmm! Definitely one of the best desserts this trip. Honestly, maybe THE best. I'd have to sit down and prioritize my desserts. lol The chocolate on top, it was so ... thick. It wasn't tough, but you almost had to cut it with a knife, it was that rich. And that good. DH didn't like the cake at all. But what does he know?

He ordered the Green Tea Pudding.

Disney2011pictures227.jpg

I did not try it. I didn't want to spoil my taste for the cake with ... that. It didn't look appetizing, but he loved it. He said it really hit the spot. DD got a fruit cup and DS got a bowl of ice cream.

During dessert, I got a text from our WoW friends! YAY! They were at the front gate! I told them to go get FPs for Soarin and then to head to Japan.

After we finished desserts, I wondered if I had made a mistake. We were planning to go grab FPs for Test Track next, but obviously, they wouldn't be able to if they were getting Soarin' FPs. So I had to sit down and think. DH took the kids into a little shop and bought them each a treat. DD got a Ramune (don't recall flavor, but it was red), and DS got a Thomas candy dispensor thing. DH got some rice puffs - they had the consistency of dough and was filled with a jelly.

So while they shopped, I was trying to plan out our day with them just now arriving. I was sure I did the right thing by sending them for Soarin' FPs, and if we got the TT ones as soon as their window opened, it should be okay.

I called them to see where they were. They had just entered WSC and was near Canada. I told them to meet us at Mexico, and we'd go on the ride. Since we had never physically met before, we only had a general idea of looks based on facebook pictures. I told them DH and I were both wearing green shirts (not sure how that happened) and mine had Kermit on it. They described their attire, so surely we'd all be easy to spot.

To make things simple, our WoW friends are brothers - and I'll call them by their WoW nicknames. Kouga is the one that we've known the longest. I talk to him almost daily ingame and even through facebook and texting. Akki doesn't play WoW as much as Kouga and I, but I have known him for years still. All of the planning was done with Kouga - who said he would be bringing Akki along.

On our trek from Japan to Mexico, DH started his whining. I confess, he whined constantly, but I was fed up with it. It was MY vacation and he was trying to ruin it. I stopped, pulled him to the side and I told him to SHUT UP. If he wasn't happy, he could go back to the room anytime he wanted. The kids and I were trying to enjoy ourselves, but he was making it really hard with his rain cloud. I dubbed him Grumpy-Eeyore. I told him to go take a Time Out and when he was ready to be a big boy, he could join us. I pointed out he was behaving worse than the kids.

DH was silent for a few minutes, and while I could never imagine him raising a hand to me, I was afraid today might be the day. lol I have never fussed at him, let alone, in public. I had just embarrassed him. (There wasn't anyone nearby who could hear me - I never raised my voice, but I'm sure people could tell I wasn't happy with him from a far distance.) He looked around for a few minutes, sucked it up, and said that he'd keep his thoughts to himself. That was the end of DH's whining. HUZZAH!

Kouga and Akki were waiting in Mexico and I saw them off to the side. As I was approaching, I saw Kouga pull out his phone. He was about to call to ask where we were. I approached and introduced myself and immediately Akki says "She's not wearing a red shirt." Apparently Green Kermit was translated into red. lol No wonder they couldn't find us. We visit for a minute and decide to board the ride to get out of the heat.

The entire time we were riding the Mexico ride, Kouga and Akki talked. They commented on the ride, the decor, the show. I'm sure that it may have annoyed others, but we enjoyed their commentary. Mostly they said things we were thinking anyway. Or they'd spot something neat and would point it out. While they are locals, they don't visit WDW.

After the ride, Akki asked if we could hit up a few other attractions throughout the day. Every attraction he mentioned was on my to do list, so it worked out well. I honestly don't remember which way we went first .... I think it was to Ellen's Energy, since it was a nice indoor attraction with a longer run time.

On our way, we saw a bear! The line wasn't long, and I told Kouga and Akki to go find some shade while we saw Duffy.

There were three girls in front of us. One of them turned and asked if I'd take pictures for them with their cameras. I started to say that the PP Photographer would do it for them, but was afraid I'd sound rude or bothered that they asked. So I took all three of their cameras. Once it was their turn, the Handler asked me for their cameras. She heard me agree, so I let the girls know that the Handler had their cameras. I was glad that she overheard our conversation - as I'm really a horrible photographer. However, I would have wanted someone to return the favor if I was in need - so didn't deny their pictures. lol

Then it was our turn. They were excited to see .... Build A Bear! lol I let them know it was Duffy, Mickey's teddy bear. Of course Duffy was excited to see DS carrying the Kidcot Duffy and bounced. DS became frightened, as he wasn't sure what Duffy was doing. But once I pointed out that he saw the Kidcot Duffy and was excited, DS was happy to show him what he colored so far.

Disney2011pictures228.jpg

Disney2011pictures229.jpg

Disney2011pictures230.jpg

After Duffy's we saw ...

Disney2011pictures231.jpg

Disney2011pictures232.jpg

Then we continued to Ellen's. I wasn't sure exactly how Ellen's worked. I knew that the theater split, but wasn't sure where it split, so I said that we'd put the kids in the middle, in case our family got separated. On the far end was DH, followed by the kids, then myself, and then Akki and Kouga. I saw immediately how it was split up, but it was still better that the kids were inbetween us in case they got scared.

I have to admit, I really enjoyed Ellen's. It's not something I could do every year, but I really did enjoy the show. Again, Akki and Kouga provided commentary throughout, which really did help on the entertainment factor. They were just saying what everyone else was thinking. And didn't hesitate to state the fact. No, really. They said something, I kind of gasped they said it, and they stated "Admit it, we were all thinking it." lol

After Ellen's, enough time had passed that they were eligible for TT FPs. So we all grabbed one. (Okay, so we had to hang around for like 3 minutes.)

Next up? Captain EO! Yep, we all wanted to see Captain EO. We hadn't seen it before, but Kouga and Akki had. They just wanted to relive childhood memories.

So we walked over to Captain EO. It was dark in the pre-show area, and I wasn't comfortable with that. I had no clue if I was standing near someone. And I'll admit, I'm pretty clutzy ... so I just knew I'd fall on someone. It turned out, she had us packed like rats in there. I swear she had night vision or something. Again, we watched the pre-show (it hadn't been on too long, I think), and Kouga and Akki provided commentary.

Has anyone watched MST3K? Yeah ... I felt like I had my own personal MST3K show going on. It was awesome. (And if you haven't seen it, this guy and his robots are in space, and they watch old movies and stuff and provide comical commentary throughout.)

Anyway, we head into the theater. Again Akki sits next to me. I noticed that Akki kind of adopted me. Everytime I'd turn around, DH and Kouga were forever behind and Akki was right next to me saying that we're getting too far ahead of everyone else. DH is tall, so he's not a slow walker. I just don't know. I know that once Kouga and Akki joined us, DH was a whole different person. He had guys to relate to. And not just any guys ... but geeky ones! They talked video games, RP games, you know it, they talked about it.

I don't recall much, if any, commentary. I don't know if I tuned it out so I could watch/listen, or if they were entranced in the show. We all agreed, it was cute - better than HISTA, but they really needed something else - or an update.

Okay, going to cut it off here ...

Stay tuned for the next piece: I didn't know I married a Turtle.

Before I comment on the missed update and the latest one, I HOPE YOU ARE HAPPY!!!! I was able to change Mama Melrose to 50's Prime Time! :lmao::lmao: Yes, it is all your fault! And I told Mark we are not reading any more of your dining reviews.

You know what?? I AM HAPPY! :p Serves you right for not picking it in the first place. :lmao::lmao:

I'm totally teasing. ;)

Well, when you come back, you can see what I actually did say to him. :rotfl: But I really was ready to send him to the room and keep him there until it ws time to go home.

I was actually on my way to meet up with lovethattink at Buzz's when I saw the station. The line wasn't too bad, so we hopped over. If I hadn't actually seen someone with one, I wouldn't have noticed it. And since his was still fully, I glanced around and saw the station. :thumbsup2 It was okay, and I would have one again, but it wasn't anything to rave about. It was just refreshing on a hot day ... but if it wasn't hot, I'd definitely pass it up. Yeah, yeah, so I'm weird. I'll confess to it. ;)

I'd recommend Tony's! Granted, just because we had a good experience doesn't mean its a great place - just like someone has a bad doesn't mean its horrible. Catch what I'm saying? Anyway, we definitely want to try CP, but if we have room for 2 TS MK meals, we'd definitely go back to Tony's!

I don't think I would have liked a pineapple margarita either. I don't like people messing with my favorites. :lmao:

Now you can enjoy The Crankypants posts. It's all over with (the Crankypants part that is). :thumbsup2

Comments for "Does Crankpants Ruin the Day?":
It sounds like Crankypants might have been getting tired. Maybe you should have let him stay back and get a nap....lol!!! :lmao: My DH was a bit crabby at the beginning of the trip. I cannot blame that on being tired, though.
:goodvibesI love that you surprised the kiddos with the Storytime adventure and also happy to hear that Mary Poppins was so interactive. I hope the other kids that weren't paying attention didn't put a damper on things. Cannot wait to see if you got to eventually meet up with your Wow friends. I know you were so looking forward to meeting them on your trip.
On to the next installments......:cloud9:

I cannot believe you are already planning another trip. YAY! for me, though, I get to follow along!!
Teppan Edo sounds good. I have never been there. Glad you had a talk with DH and straightened him out....:lmao:
So glad you got to meet up with the WoW friends. They sound hilarious!!! We also saw Cpt. EO and wasn't too impressed.
We saw the Duffy Bear plushes and wasn't quite sure what he was. Thanks for the update on him being Mickey's teddybear. I will have to relate that to the kiddos. I have a pic with J wearing a Duffy Mickey ears, but had no clue....
Cannot wait to read your next installment of "I Didn't Know I Married a Turtle" Sounds very interesting. :cool1:

How fun that you got to meet up with your WoW friends!

I'm sorry, I laughed when you lectured your DH.

We had an absolute blast with our WoW friends. I really wished they could have tagged along for most of the vacation. It really helped DH's mood, and they were just all around fun to be with. :goodvibes

Why are you apologizing? I was laughing as I typed it. :lmao: DH kept asking what I was doing. "Nothing." :littleangel:

I was just really fed up with him whining and trying to ruin everyone's good time.

He was tired before we even got to WDW. :sad2: He whined in the car the entire trip down, he whined all day arrival day and Monday. He whined on our Free Day, and I told him then if he didn't shut up, I wouldn't schedule anymore Free Days for him. He stopped whining the rest of the day, but picked it back up Wednesday. He was whining off and on. And of course, the kids would whine too. So I was hearing it from everyone. Sure, I was tired and hot, too. But I know how to keep my trap shut. :lmao:

The other kids didn't really put a damper on things, but part of me was struggling to not go over to the kids and remind them that everyone else was trying to listen. :sad2: I really do try to avoid telling other people's kids what to do ... but it was hard, since the other parent's didn't care. I was thankful that my kids were so well behaved and only spoke when spoken to. They weren't interrupting every other word in the story, or disrupting everyone else from enjoying the experience. But kids will be kids, and it wasn't bad. Just wish some parents would have intervened with their kids towards the end.

I cannot believe you are already planning another trip. YAY! for me, though, I get to follow along!!

If you think you can fit in my suitcase, you can sneak along. ;)

I'm very excited, but it won't be "real" until I put the deposit down.

Teppan was good, it wasn't great, but it was good. We'd happily go back (even if it was just for cake :lmao:).

DH thankfully chilled out for the rest of the trip after that. I'm sure he kept whining in his head, but at least he wasn't vocal about it. :lmao:

Our WoW friends were great. I was having so much fun hanging out with them. I had been worried they'd slow us down, but they really didn't. :goodvibes

Glad you finally figured out who Duffy was. :p DD wanted to buy one, but they were soooo expensive!

I'm looking forward to my next installment the most. It contains probably one of the BEST moments of our entire trip. :cloud9:

We ate at Teppan Edo in '09 on my DH's birthday. Unfortunately it was almost 10pm (free dining - the only reservation we could get!) I tried the same dessert as your DH and didn't like it. I'm glad he did though. Your cake looked good, I don't know why I didn't try that.

What's really funny is when my DH & I were in Epcot one day, we somehow got to talking about what you do when you kid doesn't want to come with you, and how the "fine we'll leave you here" thing won't work since the first time they do it, you're really not going to leave them there LOL. I told DH we should leave them there the first time they do it, and then we won't have to worry about it. I'm glad you didn't have to fight with your DS though!

Oh my goodness I was cracking up at what you said to your DH - I'm glad it worked! And I'm glad you finally met up with your friends.

My DH is a very adventurous eater, and he rarely says "I don't care for that". So ... I probably wouldn't have liked it either. I almost didn't get the cake ... but ... I just had to. It had the word chocolate in it. :lmao:

What you do is give the kid the realization that you would actually do it (without really doing it) and that's what works. ;)

As you can see, we walked off. DH and DD went ahead, and I took my time. Of course I hear "MOMMY! WAIT!" So I turned around and snapped a couple of pics. Our other option was for DH to pick him up and carry him off, but we really didn't want to force him, and I was afraid he'd scream and cry if we did. (We weren't going to go far, just enough to "hide" from him and spy - we wouldn't have let him out of our sight, as anything could happen in just a few short seconds. And we made sure he was watching us walk away.)

I'm glad you enjoyed our little talk. :lmao: You were right on the nose when you guessed it was DH with the time out. I couldn't understand why he was being so vocal about everything. He knows better. :confused3

And our WoW friends were just great guys to hang out with! I hope that they can join us some on our next trip. :goodvibes

Great update. Love how when you say "okay, see you later" and your son comes chasing after you (we've pulled that parental trick a few times ;) ).

Your meal at Teppan Edo looks nice. We've never eaten there (Nicki, my friend here on the DIS said it doesn't compare to the place we go in Naples so I think we'll stick with the Naples hibachi which we LOVE).

Glad you got to meet up with your WoW friends.

And hooray for giving it to Crankypants! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Love the pictures with Duffy.

I'm just glad that DS was young enough that I could pull that trick with. :lmao: If I said it to DD, she'd respond with "You wouldn't actually leave me, you'll just go over there and hide. And if you did leave me, that's okay, because I'm at DISNEY!" :rotfl2: She's too smart for us now. ;)

Teppan Edo really wasn't any different than any of the hibachi grills at home. Food tasted the same, same show - just nicer staff. I'd love to hear about your place in Naples and why its so awesome though! (Can talk food all day.)

Well.... was I wrong to give it to Crankypants? :lmao:

I hadn't thought about Duffy being out there, and I just happened to spot him, and there was barely a line. :goodvibes I felt bad for making Kouga and Akki wait, but I did tell them to seek out shade. It was MY vacation, right? :rotfl:

All caught up! I had a horrific day yesterday so I didn't get on and missed 2 updates somehow!

LOVE the storytime with Mary Poppins. I can only imagine how excited you were since she's your favorite!

Wasn't that cake in Teppan Edo to die for?:worship: I also got it when we went there on our trip and my DH that green tea thing that your DH got too. I tasted his and :scared1:. Unlike your DH, mine didn't like his and kept stealing bites from my cake:sad2:

Oh no! Hope everything is okay, and it wasn't serious! :guilty: <~~ worried face?

I kind of thought it would be Belle telling the story, as she's the character most associated with the love for books, so I was ecstatic to see MP! :cloud9:

And yes, that cake was OMG YUM. I was soo worried ... but thinking back ... I think it was THE best dessert I had all week. Think next year I can go in and just ask for a cake? :lmao:

My DH loves weird stuff. When we go to places, he orders the strangest thing on the menu - and he LOVES  eating around the World. So the Green Tea Pudding was right up his alley.

Did you not tell your DH that stealing chocolate from a woman is punishable by death? :lmao::lmao::rotfl2::rotfl2:

I'm trying to catch up! I can say that the green tea pudding looks gross, but it is probably something my DH would love too! :rotfl:

You weren't kidding when you said there was more coming. Good for you! I bet your a hero to many here on the boards! I know I've read quite a few lately who have a dh that refuses to enjoy himself!

You ate lucky that will still work with DS. Maya would tell me something along the lines of so what!

It's never to early to plan another trip. I'm planning two in my head! They may be a while though; my dh doesn't want to get on board

We pulled the, "I guess you can just stay here but we are leaving trick on Kay and Jay many times, too. Kay has smartened up about it, too. I remember vividly doing that when J was 3 on our '09 trip and I think the little bugger walked off down the road in DHS and I made Mike run and get him. Maybe he was too young at that time to full understand the implications. :rotfl: Now it works a lot better. Another trick we like to play is acting like we forgot to bring our money when we are at a restaurant and exclaiming after we eat that we forgot our money and we guess the kiddos will have to wash dishes to pay for the meal....:rotfl: Jay always gets this crazy nervous look on his face.....it is priceless. I know we are EVIL parents. :lmao:
