I'm sure this has been asked before, and I did search, but the last answer I could find was from 2004.
So, with that being said, DW wants to go on ToT next time we visit, but I don't like not knowing how many times we could be dropped. I understand the drop sequence is randomly selected from a number of possibilities each time, but I think I would be more comfortable if I knew how many times would be the most I would drop. (I would steel myself for more drops until the maximum number had been reached. :) )
So...can someone advise what the largest number of drops on ToT might be?

TIA

It depends on what you count as a "drop."

In addition to the substantial major drops, there can be multiple short drops (of only a few feet, each) that can come singly or in clusters.

Offering a number, such as 5 drops, maximum, would not take into account the little ones (which can feel like the big ones, only they come to an abrupt stop much sooner.)

I agree with Robo (I should make a shirt that says that...)

We went last week and rode it 4 or 5 times, once right after the other and then a couple of different days. Each drop sequence was different.

One time, there were only short (couple of feet) drops.

The very last time there were long drops and a lot of weightlessness because they dropped you, shot you up and dropped you immediately again... a couple of times.

So... it varies and there's no way to predict what you're going to get.

That said... I'm the resident CHICKEN on the boards. I rode ToT the very first time in 2008. If you would like to witness it... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VnfomXAawk

This trip, I rode it and LOOOOVED it. It was not nearly as bad as I thought it was in 2008 :goodvibes This is one of my new favorite rides... and NEVER in a MILLION TRILLION years would I ever think that I would say that. The drops are really smooth and by the last time I rode it, I actually had a SMILE on my face!!!!!:thumbsup2

I talked my wife in to riding ToT on our last trip (she's not really a thrill ride person). Let me just say that my hearing in my left ear will never be the same. I couldn't believe how loud she screamed - seriously. Not to mention the death grip she had on my arm (some light bruising). On the flip side, this was the only time I've ever purchased the ride photo! I would have paid a LOT more just to make sure I got it - priceless. :rotfl2:

I'll just have to tough it out then. I guess they don't call it the Tower of TERROR for nothing.:goodvibes

BTW I should add I have ridden it before, but not since the whole random drop thing was added.

Yeah it's REALLY random now. Each ride was different. The one I mentioned with all of the short drops... we were like :confused3 what was that?!?!

Cute! :rotfl:
This a favorite ride of the DH & I.

why not just let her ride it herself if you don't like it? You could even wait in line with her and then leave thru the chicken exit. I know I would enjoy it more by myself than with my DH who hated it.

I offered her that option when we there last year, but she really wants someone to ride with her.
Is this what is known as "taking one for the team"?

Would it help to know that you aren't actually being dropped, but pulled down? I hate the rides that you actually drop on, I'm so nervous that those cables are going to snap! Knowing that you are getting pulled down helped me tremendous and now its my favorite ride! Actually in March when we went it was really quiet there for EMH. We asked the CM if there was a shorter way than going all the way out and in. They took us down the "secret" way over and over. We ended up riding 10 times in a row! :cheer2:

If I may share a story from last year. During our October trip to Disney World, our youngest daughter of 6 HAD to ride Tower of Terror, even though she was deathly afraid of it (She was watching other family members and friends and their enthusiasm upon exiting the ride). Now, I've ridden this multiple times, as it is one of my all time favorites, so I knew when to "expect" the drop. I braced my arm around my daughter in a comforting but secure fashion, and whispered "Get ready for the drop. Don't worry, I got you".
And guess what happened?

IT WENT UP!!!

Totally catching myself (and daughter) off guard! Nothing more surreal than bracing yourself for the drop and expecting your posterior to be airborn, only to have it heavy as heck as you shoot up!
Of course, the random drops followed, and she survived, but as we exited I asked her "Did you do okay?", which she replied "Yes daddy, but that first part when WE WERE SUPPOSED TO DROP scared me!"
Me too, dear daughter. Me too!:thumbsup2

It's really hard to say because of the randomized drop sequence, but for me the more drops the better!

I have rides, can't wait to try all the attractions at Disney... however I. Have. No. Desire. to ride ToT... Just the mere thought of it scares me s**tless. Sorry, but there isn't another word to describe it! LOL.

I used to be the same way. I was physically angry that DH wanted me to go on it the first time. I said "OHHH NO NEVER AGAIN!" And then of course I did it this past trip like 4 times and LOVE.IT. now!!!

I love ToT, and the more drops the better...but wow, I would be totally disoriented if it went up first instead of down!

I think it's 7. I'm not sure but it seems like EVERYTIME I go I get dropped the max!!! And I don't ride it for the drops!
