Mass Shooting at Orlando Club

Pppmmmmnnnn
Who knows? Obviously we have to consider the possibility that any family member of the shooter talking to the media right now has some agenda.

But based on my experience, I can't imagine someone seeing two guys kiss, then waiting several weeks, and then committing a mass murder of different people in a different city. If he was seriously upset by the PDA between two men, I would expect his response to be to confront them right then. It's just illogical that he would wait, and then hit a gay club 200+ miles from the gay men he saw in Miami.

I have no doubt he hated gays -- obviously none of us know why. We'll probably never know for sure, but clearly Pulse was not a random target selection.

OTOH...why did he also apparently case Disney Springs?

I actually think this horrible tragedy was a "twofer" -- both a radical Islamist terrorist attack, and a hate crime against gays. As many have posted in this thread, there are numerous cases of radical Islamists targeting gays worldwide. Neither mass murder nor killing gays is out of character for them.
My understanding, his interest in Disney Springs was during Gay Days.

It's even more than that. What he did in one of the 911 calls was to publicly pledge his allegiance to the ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. al-Baghdadi is the declared "Caliph" per ISIS. According to the interpretation of Islamic Law that ISIS follows, any Muslim that dies without making such a public pledge to a Caliph dies a "death of disbelief" (i.e. "No heaven for you!"). The Orlando shooter may have had a hard time figuring out WHICH branch of radical Islam that he wanted to adhere to, but I seems like he settled on one, and answered their call to launch attacks from within, and followed it's proscribed playbook pretty darn well. To me, whether the flow of information between ISIS and the shooter was uni or bi-directional doesn't really make much difference.

Not long after reading your post, I read that the Islamic extremist who killed the police commander and his wife in France also pledged allegiance to "my emir, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi."

Right, it was. I'm not one of the people denying there was a homophobic motive. I just think he was more motivated by his interpretation of his religion.

Right, and typical of politicians everywhere, the French President -- in a blinding flash of insight -- said he thought France needed better security. At least we don't have a monopoly on political grandstanding!

I'm absolutely stunned that she knew he was planning this and did nothing! Where is her humanity?
What stuns me is the degree to which the investigators are talking to the media. They are giving up information that could easily compromise the larger -- and at this point, more important -- investigation into whether this guy really acted alone. They are beyond unprofessional, and their egos are overloading whatever judgment they may have.

Terrorist attacks like this don't occur in a vacuum. People know, people help, and people follow.

Blabbing little tidbits like this tells accomplices and sympathizers who you are talking to, where you are looking, and where your investigation will go next. It can cause guilty people to get away, or carry out more attacks later.

The LE folks in Orlando need to take a look at the French/Belgian investigation of the Paris attacks to see how things are done right.

Regarding the wife, what exactly did she think was going on when he had her drive him to the club? Perhaps instead of talking him out of it, a call to 911 is in order. I sincerely hope she is charged with being an accessory, ignorance (snort) is not an excuse.

Just my two cents...I think it's more likely we'll find he had "complicated" personal life, and religion wasn't the only source of his extreme rage. Maybe it was rage at others as well as at himself...

I totally agree, but I was under the impression that at this point the FBI was in charge of the investigation- I certainly could be wrong though- I have the news on but real life stuff keeps distracting me.

There's no question an attack on the gay community was a key part of his planning.

I really don't like outwardly (to the rest of the world) acknowledging that as a relevant aspect of the attack. As far as the terrorists and the rest of the world are concerned, we shouldn't have any different response no matter what Americans they target. The way they oppress (and kill) gays based on their beliefs is abhorrent. However in this case, the message should be clear that we don't recognize their different classifications of people based on race, sexual orientation, etc. IOW, it's not that you attacked gays, it's that you attacked OUR gays... our citizens.

Same thing if they were to attack a mosque that wasn't playing ball with their radical ideologies. You attack OUR Muslims, and you will face the wrath of our entire country.

The only way they are going to have any real impact on our country is if we allow them to divide us.

Apparently they are reporting she took him to get a gun/holster??? Why is she not in jail as an accessory????

So, if you go with your spouse to the drug store and they buy sudafed and they then make methamphetamine out of it, you should be arrested as well right?

I think it comes down to how much she knew about what he was up to, and the degree of her involvement. I think they're putting together the information right now to see if she should be arrested. They haven't mentioned finding his car at the scene. What if she drove him there that night? Lots more information to come I'm sure.

It's like Thanksgiving dinner. We can get into heated arguments and attack our family members, but if someone outside the family attacks someone in your family, you all stick together and show a unified front.

In some instances, I sadly do not think this is true. I hate giving cryptic messages but I won't expand on this thought out of respect for the rules of the board.

To humans everywhere who wish to live in peace it shouldn't matter how victims were targeted in something like this, it's simply abhorrent and will not be accepted, end of story. Ethnicity, nationality, creed, color of skin, sexual orientation, the type of car you drive or the kind of shoes you wear shouldn't matter when you look at something like this, it simply cannot be tolerated by civilized humans who want to coexist peacefully.

A lot of people assume that, but it's probably not true. There may be two or more investigations going on at the same time, or there might be a joint investigation with agencies handling the pieces they are best equipped to handle. The latter is the most likely scenario. The primary jurisdiction would be Orlando PD, but I'm sure there are a lot of other agencies -- local, state, and federal involved.

I just read that Disney is donating $1 Million to the victims fund plus matching employee donations through their foundation. I am glad to see them stepping up for the city of Orlando. I am sure many WDW cast members have been personally affected by this tragedy. They are also having a blood drive on property and providing counseling to those who need it. I absolutely respect them for doing this.
