Mass Shooting at Orlando Club

Haven't read all this thread, so maybe this has been mentioned - but have noticed when looking at the list of the dead, it 'appears' that most (almost all) of the names are masculine - was it just a male club? Just wondering!

I honestly think about it everytime I go to Disney and am waiting to get in. Hundreds of people waiting, packed in together, familes, children, all before the security gates. It's sad to say but I'm surprised it hasn't already happened.
I also think there are a lot more potential attacks then we realize. Our Walmart had a gunman, police shot and killed him almost instantly and no one else was hurt. It made local news for a day and everyone moved on, but it could have been a huge tragedy. The guy in LA, sounds like that could have been a massive attack... I think although we cry for more to be done, our law enforcement is doing an amazing job because we don't even realize all the other potential attacks there have been.

Yes, if you're inclined to pray, blood bank personnel, I'm sure, are working feverishly right now, and are no doubt under a tremendous amount of pressure to not only do their jobs, but do them correctly and without delay. They're all probably working extended hours with little sleep, then back to work. I would not care to be in their shoes right now. If people are so inclined, they could absolutely use our good thoughts and prayers right now, as well.

I think it is because Orlando is being stretched thin. They have 6 trauma surgeons available. Also they are critically short on blood and yes a lot has been donated in the last 24 hours but that blood has to be processed before it is available. So being short of supplies is going to make it harder to get these people stable.
How can a metro area of over 2 million people only have 6 trauma surgeons?

Any particular blood types more urgent?
It was initially O+ ("universal donor"), O-, and I believe AB-

But that could have changed because blood banks in your area may have depleted other blood types supporting Orlando. If you're considering donating, I would call a local blood bank or check their website.

Well it was a gay club, and in my experience they do tend to be heavily male unless specifically advertised as a lesbian club/Lesbian night. I do know there were women there though. It is possible he was targeting just, or mainly, the males.

As a previous poster shared, type O is the universal donor for whole blood/red blood cells and type AB is the universal donor for platelets, so those are always in VERY high demand. But ALL blood types are needed, as they try to match the type as closely as possible when they can. Blood can be separated into lots of different components to be used for different purposes, so it's all valuable.

Actually they had various special nights. The night of the shootings was a Latin Night.

It's an all-or-nothing mentality. Let's say there is a law preventing easy access to mass-killing guns. They have to use something else. So instead of 50 deaths and 50-something injuries, the madman still carries out his crime but because of having to use a slower gun or even a home made bomb, we have 10 deaths and 20 injuries. Did it stop the crime? No. But there is less death. That's a start, in my book.

One death or a hundred deaths, it's still bad and should not be done. There is no number that can be justified. Justifying less deaths is wrong. The only deaths that should be justified is the Radical Islamic Terrorists that wish us harm. Lets focus on the haters not their tools of destruction.

OK, so let's not try to reduce the number of deaths in any way.:guilty:

First of all, docs are only part of the team. Secondly, six trauma surgeons (if, in fact, that number is correct) can take care of a LOT of patients.

Also don't forget, this event was not a simple case of ambulances pulling up to the club, loading, and driving to the hospital. There would have been a considerable delay -- several hours, in many cases -- in patients reaching the hospitals. Some weren't even rescued by the police until 3 hours after the event started. So it's not like 53 patients fell from the sky into the ER!

Initially -- shortly after 2 AM -- the scene outside the club would have been utter chaos and the initial EMS responders would have been overwhelmed. But only for a few minutes. There are well-established and often-practiced procedures for handling mass casualty incidents. Incident Command would have been quickly established and structure would be imposed in the first 5-10 minutes. Then the real work could begin in an organized way. If you have any doubts, just go back and watch some of the video from the Boston Marathon bombings and note how controlled the scene is and how calm and efficient the first responders are. Even the untrained bystanders helping were sufficiently calm and clear-headed to be effective, and we saw the same thing in Orlando early Sunday morning.

In most cases, the first victims encountered by EMS personnel were probably herded to a place of safety and just warehoused there because they would have been the least injured -- what we call the "walking wounded" or "greens." Subsequent patients would have been triaged as they were found, with some going to the Trauma Center, others going to other hospitals. Others probably were delayed for a long time and sent to more distant hospitals because their injuries were not as severe.
