Mass Shooting at Orlando Club

Orlando Health update via Twitter:

"A number of patients currently in our care remain criticality ill & in shock. Five patients remain in grave condition."

:(

Edited: Per CNN: 6 patients have been released. 6 to be operated on today. 43 patients total still are in the hospital.

Is anyone else surprised that none of the wounded have not subsequently died (KNOCK WOOD).
Yes...VERY surprised, and thankful. I haven't seen any actual numbers on any of my EMS sites, but if anyone sees a count of the number of "Trauma Alert" patients, that would indicate life-threatening injuries. I'm sure there were some. Many patients are probably not out of the woods yet, and many more will likely suffer horrible disabling injuries from their wounds.

So what will authorities do with the shooter's parents?

I don't know, but I wonder what authorities in other countries would do with them.

I'm not sure it's been established that they had any involvement from what I've read.

I noticed people keep bringing up the bomb thing. Honestly I think there's a lot of overestimating just how easy it is to make a reliable bomb that would inflict massive damage. There's a reason these shooters are choosing certain guns. They are easy to get and there's nothing to stop them from acting once they obtain them.
Also it's easy to say oh well they'll just buy them illegally. Again I wonder just how much of an over simplification that is. You have to have some type of connection to do that. It's not as simple as it's being made out to be.
There'd also be more of a chance to catch them before they act.
There are many was to inflict mass casualties....not just plane, trains, automobiles, guns and bombs. If one has the will, sadly there's a way.

This is really interesting, as I've seen very little about his current wife, or his child (other than he was upset that his child witnessed two men kissing).

"Omar Mateen and his wife, Noor Zahi Salman, visited Walt Disney World in April, the source says. Salman told federal authorities on Sunday that her husband had more recently been "scouting Downtown Disney and Pulse [nightclub] for attacks."

So I am reading this to say that his current wife knew of his plans for mass destruction. Now that's a nice lesson to teach your kid. That goes for Dad and Mom. Wow.

I've said it before and I will say it again, and every time I have said it someone looks at me like I'm horrible for even thinking it. But you tell me.. To someone who hates the Western way of life, determined to send a message to the world and bring us to our knees..is there anywhere in North America that would deliver the blow that an attack at Disney would deliver? It represents our wealth and privilege, capitalist culture, families and happiness... to me it's a beacon and at huge risk of being a target. And I'm certain with the recent huge upswing in security that Disney knows it too.
I've never seen as much security as I saw on our May trip. On Mothers day at Epcot the entrance was crawling in security and plain clothes surveillance. I noticed one man sitting off on his own in a Hawaiin shirt talking to himself.. which then became clearer that he was security and had an earpiece. It caused me to look around and they were everywhere. Heard them telling a team I couldn't see to check certain men in the parking lot. They are taking this seriously. It's not theatre anymore.

The "in shock" info is very troubling. For a patient to be in shock more than 24 hours after being injured tells me the hospital is fighting just to keep them alive.

I think it is because Orlando is being stretched thin. They have 6 trauma surgeons available. Also they are critically short on blood and yes a lot has been donated in the last 24 hours but that blood has to be processed before it is available. So being short of supplies is going to make it harder to get these people stable.

I have to wonder if the increased security at Disney lately is more than just a coincidence. Did FBI/CIA/WDW/whoever note "increased chatter" within the last several weeks and in turn amp up security around Orlando, including at WDW? Has Universal seen increased visible security lately?

Trauma center care is not about the number of surgeons. It's about teams including many disciplines, many of which are at least as important as the docs. It's the resources available, collective experience, process, and teamwork that set trauma centers apart from regular hospitals.

Orlando Regional Medical Center is a Level I trauma center, meaning they would have a full compliment of trauma physicians, nurses, and other professionals on-duty, physically present in the hospital 24/7, and many more on call including medical students at a local university. It also means they have all the diagnostic and treatment resources needed onsite 24/7. In a mass casualty incident of this nature, they would have been turning doctors and nurses away by the time the last patients arrived. Today, they are undoubtedly forcing some of them to go home and get some rest.

There was a blanketed statement about a threat around the holidays and it has since stuck. I guess the FBI/CIA is aware that anywhere mass amounts of people gather is a target and theme parks have specifically been mentioned.

If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say absolutely. WDW has been mentioned as a coveted target since way back on 9/11. Surely there have been credible threats since then. They likely just don't broadcast them publicly.

Yes, EVERYONE has to go through metal detectors in the parking garage area at Universal now.

When a disaster such as this occurs, every resource is mobilized - staff come in on their days off, others come in from other hospitals and regions, everyone who works there is utilized, etc. What takes so long is that decisions have to be made, families have to come in to say their goodbyes in some cases, maybe from out of town, there would even be organ banks involved to see if families wanted to donate the gifts of life, etc. No doubt every possible chance is being given to those who can be saved. In other words, utter, but controlled, chaos. Staff will be traumatized as well, when this is over, as happened with many in the Boston area after the Boston bombings and its aftermath, sadly. (And other places, obviously, but Boston is the one I've witnessed personally.)

The blood requests would be to replenish supplies.

Miami is a half-hour away by air, Jacksonville, Gainesville, and Tampa are closer, Atlanta is less than an hour away -- and blood banks and EMS agencies in all those cities are calling for blood. Nobody is going to die because of lack of blood supply -- but the supplies DO need to be replenished quickly.
