Marathon Weekend 2025

MAFDOE: Completely relate to a lot of these comments!

How about a gold in runDisney FOMO? Everytime registration comes around for a race I know I’m not doing, I‘m still tempted to go in and register! (One of these years I’m just going to bite the bullet and try for every race of the season!) Even this year when I knew I’d made the right decision to skip Dopey 2024 and run the half, I felt a twinge of regret every race morning. (Though I did enjoy sleeping in)

Mondays are for Disney, Olympics edition!
(Getting something posted so we can continue our incessant chatter :rotfl2: )

If you could win an Olympic medal in something runDisney related, what would it be? And I'm not just talking about the running (although I know we have some super-speedy people in here too.)

MAFDOE: For me it's overpacking. While I've gotten better at it, and we definitely use the laundry facilities at the resort, I'm quite certain that I don't touch about 1/3 of what I pack for a MW trip. Now, part of that is because the weather can be unpredictable and I pack for everything from 30 degrees to 90 degrees. My first MW we even made a trip to a nearby TJ Maxx to buy another suitcase to bring home!
After the experience during MW 2017, I’m really not sure that packing for every possible climate is truly overpacking. I’m right there with you now.

MAFDOE: TBH I haven't done an rD race since 2018 and I haven't been to WDW since 2022 (or is it 2021? Time is weird), but mine would definitely be (over-)planning. I am a researcher at heart and in occupation so it is so easy for me to over-analyze every aspect. That said, I know this trip will be completely different as we'll be bringing our 20-month-old so I have no idea how to plan anymore :scared:

MAFDOE: I can’t picture myself as a gold medalist. I’ll settle for being the Eric Moussambani of the rD Olympics; questionably qualified, but undeniably happy to be there.

As for the currently running Olympics, I’ll give myself the gold in apathy toward gymnastics. I may be tied with others but, assuredly, no one could care less. I’ll also take the silver, behind Nick Wright and his much larger platform (in that he has a platform), in antagonism toward swimming.

MAFDOE: I think I’d medal in earliest purchase of a costume for a race weekend. I tend to decide on a costume as soon as themes get released, and start buying stuff as soon as I’m officially registered.
Right there with you. Then I overthink at least one costume and end up changing it. Right now I'm starting to think a tank top may not be the best choice for my half costume, unless I want to deal with body glide on my arms. Should I stick with it (Cinderella's pink dress) or change things up so I can wear a short sleeve UA shirt?

See, I’m the opposite. I’m more likely to need to worry about chafing with a tshirt than a tank 😄

Oooooh. Been there. On our first MW, dh ran the 5 and 10, and I ran Goofy. And dd was....ummmm....just over 2yo? I went with the "this is the bare minimum and anything beyond this is a bonus" plan. She did great, but it was a really different trip.

are arm sleeves an option instead of a shirt? It wouldn't be 100% costume-accurate, but it can sometimes be chilly in the morning.

MAFDOE: I think DH and I would medal in the most conversations about upcoming trips. As soon as we know we’re going, we talk about every aspect—where we want to eat, what time we’re leaving, whether we’ll add another day (usually yes) to the trip, race costumes, running plan, whether we’ll visit a park, etc. Our next trip is for one of the Halloween parties, so we’ve had more conversations about that than MW right now, but we’re certainly talking about MW, too. That will intensify after we get back from MNSSHP.

MAFDOE: I would medal in "least number of character stops made". And I would be a repeat medalist. For whatever reason--other than the the year of the Goof Troop Marathon-- I never stop for characters. Well, I know the reason...my brain says "race" when I go to a race.

Sorta goes against the whole Disney vibe, but there you go.

Ooh, I didn't think of that! Can I share the podium with you? I've run multiple Disney races every year since 2016 and have never stopped for a character. I love seeing them on course, but have no interest in getting pictures with them.

MAFDOE: I would medal in being able to piece together DVC reservations for marathon weekend at the last minute.

Best showing to date was getting all 5 nights in an OKW 1 bedroom for last marathon weekend when my friends told me in October they wanted to join me. (Also had the option for a Stand Riv 1 bedroom at one point, but eek the points cost....).

Runners up (all after the 7 month mark): Piecing together 11 nights at BWV in a studio and snagging Kilimanjaro Club studios twice.

MAFDOE: I would medal in wanting to do a costume but not actually ever doing one, especially for non-5K races. They sound great and I see so many amazing ones out there, but my practical side usually wins out. I have even made notes while standing around on race mornings but nothing ever comes from it.

This is also me. I feel the same way about cosplay at conventions. I love them but don't have the motivation, and prefer comfort over all!

I want to second the idea of arm sleeves. I bought a set with numerous colors before the January Disneyland races and they were AWESOME! They made a huge difference in keeping me warm at the start and once I started getting warm it was incredibly easy to peel them off and tie them to my hydration belt. Afterwards I kept thinking "why don't more people use these?"

MAFDOE:
I love buffet breakfasts and especially post races. It is my mental excuse to attempt making the restaurant sorry for saying “all you care to eat” when I have run earlier in the day. In the spirit of Ron Swanson I’m standing on top of the podium for most bacon consumed by one person at the buffet post race. And while the anthem is playing I am eyeing one of those yumming fried cinnamon donuts, ok two.
