Marathon Weekend 2025

I’m looking forward to some actual fall temps here in SE VA. Moving my long run to tomorrow due to an event I have all weekend. And the low is in the 30s. Can’t wait!

I love run/walk! I adopted it 3 years ago when I ran my first marathon and I have improved greatly each time. I did a 3:30/.30 interval this past year. I think 2:30/.30 is my favorite. I’ve dropped it to 1:00/.30 to throw some more walking in to help with whatever is going on with my hip. I’m not a fan of that interval. I feel like I get settled into a good pace and then have to stop. I also laugh at my Garmin when it suggests I do sprints at like 5;00 pace for 10 sec. I can’t get that fast in that time! 😂

FYI, for those interested in the new Cake Bake place, as of this morning you can make reservations on the app or the Disney website. I didn’t particularly enjoy my experience there this past weekend, but don’t let that sway you. Probably still not a bad spot for a post race big piece of cake and nice adult adult cocktail to celebrate, if inclined. :-)

Please do tell about your experience at CBS aka the next Galactic Starcruiser.

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Saw a video this morning (with Asian character subtitles....I don't know enough to guess which one) of a kid using a massage gun to force his finger to tap a button on his phone screen super fast to secure something when it went live (subtitle translation said it was for a class at school?) and all I could think about was getting into race registration or the VQ on expo day.

But I'm totally not addicted to runDisney races. Totally.

It's been about two months since you posted this message regarding utilizing run-walk instead of running continuously. How is it going for you? I have become more and more run-walk curious since listening to interviews with Marc Buget (one of the Galloway pacers) who recently won an Ultra while using Galloway run-walk intervals.
I heard that same podcast, which got me to download the Run Walk Run book and (like the nerd that I am) start researching it. My own HARM method is a variation of Galloway's RWR, but apparently waaaaay to much of a deviation in terms of the run/walk mix.

And I've seen and heard the interval runners and have been very frustrated with trying to get around them as this pack of people spreads out across the road at such short intervals that my pokey self can't get around them quickly. OTOH, there must be something to it. I'm having a tough time mentally with the idea of running for barely a minute or two, but still.....

So as I ramp back up to running and training, I plan to try the RWR method and try different mixes of r/w to see what it does to my pace and times on training runs. I figure worst case scenario is that I can always go back to my own half-@ssed method.
I don't know that I have a pressing need for faster times, especially at WDW, but for personal pride and feeling of accomplishment, I'd sure love to turn in some faster PRs for a half and a full.

All of which is to say: I'd love to hear testimony, results, issues, etc from anyone who has gone this route and how well did it work for you? (and, of course, I managed to hit send before seeing a couple of people had posted their experience with r/w....)

Are the reservations live yet? It's not showing in my dining search and no reservation link on the page for Cake Bake.

Yeah, it’s there for me. Shut down/restart the app or use an Incognito/private browsing page - sometimes pages like that get hung up in old versions, in my experience.

I just posted my experience with switching to run/walk in the Running Thread.
TLDR: It has helped me feel good running faster overall paces and helped me finish three marathons in eight days - all at a faster than my usual easy paced marathons of the last couple years.

I’ve been hearing this a lot from people and vloggers who are going of their own accord. Some things are good, other thing not that great, and it doesn’t live up to the prices. There seems to always be a comparable item somewhere on property that’s better and less expensive.

I ended up following R/W/R following an injury. Post surgery my PT swore by the method and I began using it. That was 2019/2020, since I have had zero injuries. I found the method has led to me enjoying training more, but I will admit that I have slowed some. Of course I am also getting older and post the surgery am slower.

But I am running and after spending a year with that issue when for most of it I could not run at all, I am so appreciative to get to run.

I know R/W/R is not for everyone, but it has worked for me. I had to get over being worried that I would be judged for walking, and honestly that was hard for me and took time. But I think it will keep me running for life. My goals are not about being the fastest at a race, but one day I want to be the oldest one regularly at races!

I’m not sure what I have to share can in any way be taken as testimony, but in case it’s helpful…

I’ve never been able to run more than a few minutes without walk breaks. I mean that literally: NEVER. In my entire life. I’ve been an athlete since age 5: grew up in the ballet, taking class and/or rehearsing daily for hours; I played varsity soccer; I’ve run-walked for a few decades for fitness and enjoyment. Point being, at risk of humble bragging, I’ve always been fit. But I do have asthma, and scoliosis that limits my lungs from performing normally - things that don’t seem to impede others, so IDK how much they contribute or not… all I know is that at even the slowest running pace, I’m winded quickly. My body was not made to run long distances and no amount of training has ever changed that.

Run-walk is the only way I can do it. So I have no comparison to run-only. It’s run-only and have to stop after a few minutes, or run-walk and I can go as far as I want.

As far as intervals, I change them up all the time: I’m not married to any combination. But key for me is using them from the very start of a run/race. If I try to run-only first, that’s it: the damage is done and I won’t last long. In fact, I often start a run or race with walking only for 3-4 minutes. Has no detrimental effect on my ending average pace and I feel better. Often in races I’ll skip some intervals and run a little long or walk a little longer: I go by how I feel and what the crowd around me is doing.

I think sometimes folks get too hung up on the “right” intervals for a certain pace and forget to check in on how they feel. With shorter run intervals, I tend to run faster during the run intervals AND walk faster during the walk intervals. With longer intervals, my run pace slows and so does my walk pace because I’m needing more recovery. But also, I get annoyed with really short intervals because I never feel like I can get into a good flow. All of this is why I always suggest to test a bunch of different combos and pay attention to how you feel - what feels most comfortable will vary by person, and I strongly suspect what feels most comfortable is also likely to be what promotes a best effort.

SAFD a few days late: I joined the boards in their first year or two, and at one time had to change my screen name when an update bonked things. I was planning a mega-trip for DH's boss and extended family at the time, and they referred to me as The Expert, so I just rolled with it.

Avatar is my C2C medal in front of the DL castle this past January.

Perfect! Thank you, and for everyone who responded to your post. Just what I needed.
I'm sold, now I just need to get back to running....
PT starts next week. Actual running? Prolly not until February. As it is, I feel like I've lost tone in the last two months. Just dang.

Is the RWR conversation here or on the Running Thread...???!!! 🤯🤪
Here's my experience and I'd love to hear more thoughts.

My last three long runs for marathon training have been:
2:30 ran straight through until the final 30 minutes when I switched to 90/30 (overall avg pace 11:01)
2:30 ran straight through until the final 12 minutes when I switched to 90/30 (overall avg pace 10:48)
2:45 ran straight through until the final 20 minutes when I switched to 90/30 (overall avg pace 10:36)

So the training must be working b/c I'm running longer overall time with faster paces. Yay! And I'm feeling good. 👍

The next two weeks are cut backs for my long runs and then the two weeks after that are 3 hours each which is my maximum in this training block.

I'm curious if anyone starts out running, then goes into RWR and back to running, or is it that once you switch into RWR you finish the race like that? Ok - I know this question has no answer....or it does have an answer that I won't know until January 12, 2025, but would be happy to hear other people's experiences.

I'm also not really sure if I switch to RWR towards the end of my training run b/c I know I'm close to the end, and if in the race I might run more miles as a mental thing before I switch to RWR??!! 🤷‍♀️
I'm new to this distance....obviously.
