Marathon Weekend 2025

Add me to the boat of being disappointed in my training plan. I have recoverd-ish from two herniated discs (threw off my maintenance miles before Goofy training started) and now learned I have extensor tendonitis.

Anyone else had this? I seriously though my foot was broken, that's how bad it is

(my bad for not getting it looked at sooner and pushing through the pain)
Oh hey! I have this too. It has come and gone before but I almost felt like my foot was broken after I finished the NYC marathon a week ago. Thanking my lucky stars it didn’t bother me until after. I’m taking almost a month of rest now before training for the half marathon.

someone talk me off the edge - I'm freaking out. 2 months left and I'm struggling. I had a cold for 6 weeks, ran a slow 2.5 hr half in the middle but other than that it has been bad. I lost all conditioning due to the dang cold. eeeeeek.
You’ve got this! Just slowly add the miles back in and you will get to the finish line! This deep in the training I think is just as tough mentally as it is physically. Your body will get you through. Think about that finish line!

I just had a similar thought the other day during my run that what if I couldn’t get the paces I wanted and end up not finishing 😫While I haven’t had a cold, I am dealing with some right hip/outer thigh/it pain and I’ve had to back off my faster paces and shorten my run intervals. I’m in denial about it. But I’m having to move my simulations and long runs around because of obligations so I’m going to throw some extra rest days in to give it time to rest.

Oh no! Yes, everything I'm learning is that rest is the best for it. Hope you recover quickly!

SAFD: Let me preface this by saying, I know there are rules about discussing certain topics so I am in no way trying to break these rules or push any belief on others. This is just how I feel and hope that I can be an encouragement to others.

My screen name has 2 sides to it. First, run with perseverance is from one of my favorite Bible verses, Hebrews 12:1-2. Second, it’s a great motivation to keep pushing through not only for me but hopefully for everyone else when they see it. I need the reminder daily to keep persevering through whatever obstacle comes my way in running and life. The number 7 because it’s the number of perfection, and while I am not, I look towards the only one that is and I am able to keep going.

I’m thankful that I was given the ability to be able to run and do these types of things.

No avatar because I haven’t really taken the time to do so.

SAFD: @camaker What a fun question this week!

My username is a combination of the last name of a superhero character I drew up as a teen (Nova) and a play on "tricks", hence Novatrix.

My avatar is a photo of me in my Figment costume (favorite Disney character) in front of the EPCOT ball with my medal, just after the 2023 Disney marathon. The Photopass photographer said he had a special magic photo just for me, and had me pose then added the idea bubble and Figment. It's probably my favorite photo taken of me ever!

SAFD: Nothing special about mine. First initial, middle initial, last name and my uniform number from my college baseball days. My picture is from 2023 MW after the marathon. I was taking a selfie and a nice guy who was standing off to the side offered to take a picture. It's one of my favorite pics from the various MW just because it is simple and clear.

Thank you!!! I have been messing around with 4 min / 30 sec intervals at around 7:45 pace. While out on my run today (no music, so a million thoughts going through my head, LOL) it dawned on me, that I could possibly try to do a 3:30 to 3:45 marathon by going this route. My hope would be that by taking the 30 second walk breaks, I could try to save my hamstrings, which always seem to give me fits the last half of the marathon.
It's been about two months since you posted this message regarding utilizing run-walk instead of running continuously. How is it going for you? I have become more and more run-walk curious since listening to interviews with Marc Buget (one of the Galloway pacers) who recently won an Ultra while using Galloway run-walk intervals.

I haven't been training with it lately. I did it for a weeks and was planning on doing it for a 10 mile race that I had a few weeks ago. Once I got going and was going at a good pace, I just kept running. Since then, I have just been straight running. But I haven't ruled it out. I am starting my build to the really long runs on weekends. I think as I get to my target 20 mile run, I may use the strategy to see how it works. For the marathon, I have been contemplating running the first half and then doing the run/walk for second half.

Well, to be fair most people walk, I mean “power hike,” the inclines and run the declines in Ultras, so run/walk is kind of baked into the sport. A 24hr 100 miler is a 15 min/mile, which is why “roadies” derisively refer to it as Ultrawalking.

I'm more of a fan of continuous running myself, but I'm definitely curious about whether or not it can make me faster. I sent an email to Chris Twiggs (who runs the training programs for Jeff Galloway) and he informed me that his anecdotal evidence shows that most people average seven minutes faster times when they switch to run-walk. He did add the caveat that the improvements break down when the pace is faster than nine min/mile, but that one can expect a five minute improvement for the half marathon. I think that I'll stick with continuous running for Dopey 2025, but I might do a HM in Miami to see if run-walk might get me a faster time.

My strategy is self-admittedly unconventional for the marathon. I am planning on running the first nine miles at MP (8:30) until I get to Magic Kingdom. After leaving MK at Mile 9.5, I am going to see what time it is and run at my easy pace (most likely 10:30) to get to AK at 7:30 to ride Everest. Then, I switch back to MP from AK to DHS. Meet up with my daughter to ride Tower of Terror (and some other rides if I can). After that, I'll finish up the race at whatever pace feels comfortable.

I can tell you from personal experience that it while I’m sure it varies for everyone, run/walk makes me a lot faster. I run continuously for almost all my training because I prefer it and I think it helps my endurance. Runs over 12 miles I switch to intervals to make it easier on myself. When racing for time I run walk either 4/:30 or 3:30/:30. My half PR was actually 2:30/:30 as I’ve found the shorter the intervals the faster I can run, but don’t want to be sprinting, so I’m trying to find the balance point. This past W&D 1:42 was 3:30/:30, my best continuous half was about 1:55 a couple years ago so maybe faster now but not even close to my run walk. Marathon I can’t even imagine maintaining my paces without run/walk. I’m trying like heck to get to 3:30 but haven’t held pace past mile 21 yet. I suggest to anyone and everyone to at least try it and see how it works for them.
Good luck with the plan for marathon, sounds like fun.

Checking in from up north where it was 34 on my run this morning!
I am not ready for winter! Luckily it's mostly been in the 40s here but my legs are having trouble acclimating, they are so stiff! I might have to bring out the fleece legging soon. We have been getting a lot of rain and my long run this past weekend was in the cold rain, I've never been so miserable, at least it wasn't windy. And then I when I go to WDW in January it will be so warm and humid that I will barely be able to breathe
