Marathon Weekend 2023

Also, I'm not optimistic because What in the Lisa Frank is this shopDisney spirit jersey?!
That’s not a Lisa Frank spirit jersey! Because I would definitely buy one if it existed 😂 My 10k costume was almost “Lisa Frank Minnie,” which obviously I made up, and because of that couldn’t quite get as excited about as an existing character (for a race I’ll be running in the dark, who would see my patterned nail wraps?!)

(only pic from just before a session in my covid clinical trial, was worried I’d have to remove for it but instead got compliments from every nurse 😂)

When thinking about running in bad conditions, just imagine your body like an explosive with a fuse. The slower you go the more likely the fuse doesn't get lit. But once you run too fast and your core body temp increases too much that fuse is lit. At that point there's little you can do before the explosive goes off. So just go slow. WAY slower than you think you need to go. If you were aiming for an ideal 4:05 marathon, but think you can do 4:15 pace under those bad conditions, then run 4:30 pace to start and then ease into the race. Keep that core body temp as normal as possible for as long as you can.

I’m still hoping for ~ideal weather conditions obviously. But, if the weather does look like it will be poor is there a guide to setting a pacing plan?

If my pace is 11/mile but the T&D suggest a 5% effect, I should slow down by 5% (~11:35) the entire race? Or maybe 10%+ to be safe?

If it’s relatively cool at the start, should we keep pace targets while it’s cool and then slow down when it is projected to warm up?

I envision coming into the race with goal splits for various chunks of the race. I’m thinking of breaking it into ~thirds which would basically be pre-sunrise, early morning, and then the home stretch (hottest and most fatigued). In ideal weather I’ll aim for roughly even splits, but am trying to figure out how to adjust my plan if it starts out okay and then starts scorching at mile 17.

Since I started training a bit late, I was planning to do 20 miles this weekend to sorta cram for the marathon. With the impending weather, I decided to get up and do 20 this morning in drizzly 40F weather. Much better!

I’ll probably do some treadmill tomorrow and then maybe some more easy miles with friends on Saturday unless it’s icy.

Sorry that I'm late to post this. Excited to taper, but now just stressing that we stay healthy over the Holidays. With 5 kids, there is all sort of crud that they bring home.

100% agree with this. DS2 went to a birthday party last weekend and then 3 of the boys didn't go to school on Monday because they were sick. It's upper respiratory, and DH is also getting it, so I'm assuming it'll get around to me by the middle of next week and who knows how long it'll linger into race week.

In my view, the best strategy is to plan your pace based on the worst weather you'll see during the race. So, if the race starts at a T+D 100 but ends at a T+D 150, then I personally would plan to run the whole race like it was a T+D 150. All that means is that the beginning will feel far easier, and that's ok. You're saving everything for the much much MUCH harder part when it is a T+D 150.

There isn't one answer. Not everyone responds the same to heat. Some people's personal adjustments in training and in racing are more aggressive than others. So I view the T+D adjustments as a cap of sorts. You can absolutely go slower, but don't try and go faster. I've mapped my personal racing/training data. I track very closely to the curve during training all the way up to T+D 160-170. But races are different. They push the body much much harder than any training run does. So I've found that my T+D adjustment in racing tracks well up to ~135, but after that I need a far far more aggressive slowing in pace. After years of experience, I've learned that I really have to throw out many, if not all, pace based goals once the T+D gets over 135. My body just can't handle anything close to what I'm capable of fitness wise under those conditions. So if it gets super hot for a race, it's time to put pace goals on the back burner and just coast as slowly and comfortably through the race as I can be. Find a different way to enjoy the race.

Thanks, that is incredibly helpful! I've really struggled with high temps in the past, and while I'm making adjustments to my sodium/hydration plan, I really want to err on the cautious side. I'll keep this in mind as I put together a pacing plan, and will post in my training journal with whatever I land on.

Something I just noticed, looks like we don't get any Disney Springs restaurant discount anymore? Was that a thing for Wine and Dine still or am I just out of the loop and it's something that was removed long ago?

Um, happy to send you the name of a realtor and moving company. Having grown up in that stuff (well Michigan so not as bad as you're seeing now), there is no way I could go back to that!
Lol, Denver Colorado is actually really good temps most of the time, we get more sun then Florida. This is very, very, very unusual. I like cold more than heat too.... but negatives is where I do draw the line, lol. Also I need a dry place, I hate humidity, I mean really hate it. I left the east cost for that.

I believe I read on Disney food blog that terralina had a discount in November for runners

Thanks @DopeyBadger for reassurance on missing a few days of training. I skipped Tuesday to rest my ankle, then today I just couldn't do it in the freezing rain. Tomorrow is predicted to rain all day and Saturday and Sunday are supposed to be bitterly cold. Hopefully I'll get a few miles in, but probably not what's on my plan. Hoping next week is smoother.

And all my kids are sick. Oldest missed three days of school with a fever and younger two started in this morning with the fever. It's not flu, strep or Covid, so we just have to wait it out. Praying I'll avoid it somehow.

There will be a list typically of places that offer a runner discount.

If you haven’t been…check your rental car rates! I’ve cancelled/rebooked 3x this week and saved another $80 (and cut it almost in half of what it was when we originally booked it!)
Thanks for the reminder! Just saved $100 off of our most recent booking in November.

I so feel this. My DD2 got invited to a birthday party on New Year's Day (who does that anyway?!), and I just broke it to her this morning that we are probably not going to go to it. She's 6, so she was a bit upset, but I'm like "we leave for Disney just a few days after that and we don't want to be stuck in a hotel room when there are rides to be ridden, right?!"

It's a stomach bug going around here, and I really don't need to be puking and needing to be near a bathroom instead of out running Dopey.

After Christmas, I'm hoping to not be around any other people until we fly down to Disney on 1/3.
