Marathon Weekend 2023

Why do I get the feeling that this cold snap is Mother Nature's diabolical way of stripping us of the last remnants of any heat acclimation we may have still had in preparation for following up with an epically hot and humid marathon?

The maps don’t specifically state the food at the stops. The sponsors are Sports Beans, Honey Stingers, and a produce supplier. Any word on what produce will be supplied? Holding out hope for some sliced oranges.
Runners without limits apparently has an “inside person” who has confirmed that the food stops will be sport beans, bananas just before and after AK, and chocolate in HS.

😂😂 I was cursing my heat acclimation training this morning….an hour of marathon pace in tights, a tank, cold gear 1/4 zip, and a fleece vest. So sweaty.

I got my 5 miles in today. I waited until it was up to 19 degrees, not so much because I’m a wimp, but because we had frozen pipes (only our washer/fridge; the rest were fine) and I didn’t want to leave until we were sure they hadn’t burst. (All good!)

Everybody else getting out there this weekend — stay safe!

Our fridge and washer have frozen pipes as well. There didn’t seem to be a good way to prevent it. Must be a Carrollton thing. 🤣

I'm waiting for it to get as close to 0 as possible. The wind is something else though, right now. Wind at 25mph with windchill at -28. Ugh!

Did my last training run this morning, rescheduled from tomorrow not because of the cold, but the timing of my weekend dogsitting. That meant 20 miles in the rain at 7am- started at 44 and ended at 35, as we are in the same pattern of being quite warm overnight and then dropping throughout the day. Except for the heavens opening with a downpour and hail from mile 10-11 it was a light rain, and I *loved* it. It wasn’t my fasted nor easiest on my knees, but definitely my favorite training run. I switched to my “party” playlist after mile 11 and danced and sang out loud the rest of the way- sorry not sorry all four tourists that had to witness this on the mall this morning 🤷‍♀️ The heat destroys me so I probably won’t feel this good on race day, but fingers crossed I’ll be having just as much fun!

Question about the waivers this year - we got an email saying we haven't signed it and that we have to before the Expo, but the runDisney site is... trash and nothing seems to be working to allow us to sign it? I remember last year there were waivers at the Expo but the language about needing to sign it before arriving to the Expo feels different than last year's (maybe I'm just imagining things).

We should be fine if the site doesn't process it before and we can sign it there, right? Anyone else having a similar issue?

It’s a common issue. There will be blank paper waivers to sign at the expo.

They did change the wording this year for W&D. They said something to the effect that "there will be no option to do a paper waiver" at the expo. But there was. I expect there will be again. They just prefer most people do the digital if possible.

They definitely want people to do it virtually but they have to have the paper option because their websites/IT is so terrible.

Everyone got the same generic email, whether they had signed it already or not.

When you log into your rundisney account and go to the "your registrations" section there should be some text under your registration that says "you have documents that need reviewed" *if you haven't already signed your waiver*

As soon as you registered you had the option to sign your waiver in your account, so there's a chance you may have already done it.

Now with pictures! (From my phone, but it’s the same steps on a computer)

1. Log in to your rundisney account

2. Tap the 3 bars and go to “your registrations”

3. Select the registration you are trying to do the waiver for. You are NOT editing the registration. And from here it should tell you if “your documents” are completed or need attention.

You also have to scroll to the bottom of the waiver, check the box, and use the exact name used on the registration (not a shortened/lengthened version of the person’s name.)

I think she’s saying, “Taper and rest, my children! You’ve trained hard, and ‘the hay is in the barn.’”

I guess this as good a time as any to pull out the “Hay is in the Barn” post :)

Those of you who have been here a while will remember Coach Charles used to post this heading into marathon weekend. With the races fast approaching and people getting anxious about how they'll do, I figured I’d bring it back and help calm some nerves. You’ve done all the hard work. Now it’s time to enjoy the fruits of that labor.

The Hay is in the Barn
I used to hear this weekly back in my high school days (and yes there were high schools back then). Coach would walk in Thursday after practice and tell us that the Hay was in the barn boys, enjoy the fruit of our labors. If you think about it, he was correct. We have all spent the training season growing, harvesting, baling and stacking our hay for future use. There is not much more that any of us can do from now through race day. Seriously, a marathon is not an event that you can cram for. I know there are a few who can simply head out and run one, but most of us need to spend the next couple weeks allowing the body to absorb the training from the last few months. Many do not understand that the work (running, lifting, etc) is not where strength and improvements come from; rather, its the recovery periods just after the work where they occur. Its happens as a result of the muscle repairs those tiny little micro tears that occur with all workouts.

Its taper time... Yes we do need to be out and running. Taper is seriously misunderstood by many runners. It is not a time of kicking back and not doing anything. Taper is a reduction of training volume. Volume = intensity x time. In many camps it is thought that intensity should remain high through taper. I am in that camp, at least for most runners. Distances, ie time, are reduced dramatically while the mid week intensities remain just as high as previous work.

The exception to the above... If you are injured or ill, I would just recover. Do not run or otherwise aggravate your injury. Give the joint time to heal up. If ill, its still ok to run, but keep it light. The general rule of thumb is that if your cold or illness is above the neck, head out for your run; if in the chest or below the neck stay in.

NERVOUS?
It is normal. Remember how nervous you were the first time you entered a race. These are the same nerves. If this is your first event, it is very normal to have a set of nerves during this period. Tapering tends to bring the nerves out as you are not working out near as long as you were just two weeks ago. Trust me, even the most seasoned runners have similar nerves. Maybe we just hide them better, or understand them better. But watch as you are in the corral on race morning. Folks are burning off nervous energy in various ways. Make a pledge to use your nerves to help get you to and through the race. Once the gun goes off and you just hit the point where you are sweating, your case of nerves will soon disappear.

Thanks for sharing this. I still have a printed out copy of Coach Charles' turn-by-turn description of the marathon course that I love. While it's definately changed since he wrote it (was written just a year or so after they split the HM and Marathon into seperate days), I still love to re-read it as we get close to MW. It was like watching a YouTube video of the course before they were really available and helped calm nerves at the same time.

Before you resign yourself to dealing with a paper waiver at the Expo, try a few different browsers. Generally I can't get the rD site to load at all in Firefox, and Safari and Chrome work sometimes. Honestly don't understand how a company with so much money can have a website that just doesn't work half the time.

Good morning runDisney All-Stars! This week we have an early edition of SAFD. Given that tomorrow is a pretty big day for a lot of folks and we just all got to read Coach Charles’ The Hay is in the Barn” post; thank you @FFigawi. Let’s do a SAFD on Saturday. Question: We are just under two weeks out, time to face taper madness! How is it going for you? Concerns, successes, do you even taper?

My answer: When I first came back to running races (about 10 years ago) I completely misunderstood the taper period and just stopped running all together, then I flip-flopped and tried to do too much. The last few years I have gotten better about making sure my running plan included 2-3 weeks of reducing mileage but keeping up my intensity. My biggest issue becomes worrying about every little twinge in my body or scratch in my throat, fearing that MW is going to be a disaster because I will show up injured or sick. But so far doing really well, except for the run I need to go do this morning in this insane weather…. Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday and good luck in your tapers!

SAFD:

I'm following my DopeyBadger plan, so I am tapering. I'm definitely in the "oh no, what's that?!" phase of things when it comes to aches and pains and twinges. I don't know that it's so much taper madness at this point as much as it's so dang close to a race weekend that I've been training for since June and I desperately don't want anything to go wrong that is "within my control." I'm debating moving tomorrow's long run to today (so I can have all of Christmas day off) but my ankle is nagging this morning, so I probably won't. NEXT week is when the insanity will hit me because we have so many things going this week and it'll calm down quite a bit next week.

SAFD:

Into my taper here too. Mileage is down with a few harder runs left. I developed a scratch in the back of my throat yesterday, so loading up on Emergen-C like crazy. Hopefully whatever is hitting me now will be gone by marathon weekend. I’ve worked to hard to be sick for the marathon.

SAFD:

One more run that I'm moving to today (since we will be a bit busy tomorrow) and then I am into taper as well. Knock wood, but so far everything is going great. Has been a long time since I've felt this good this late into a training cycle. Now just need to keep the germs away, but unfortunately oldest DD tested positive for strep yesterday and DS is at doctor now getting his test.

SAFD: I am stressed as heck. Taper is going okay but I did miss a run this week :(. My last run is 1.5 miles and I’ll be at POFQ so I’m doing it with a friend that I’ve met online & we’ve been virtually supporting each other so I think that will be a really cool way to end this training cycle.

I agree with @Herding_Cats about the pains. My whole right leg hurts and idk if I am just making it up. My foot hurt on my run yesterday (differently than my normal pain— this was in my heel and I felt it immediately) but it went away once I was warmed up. I also think carrying Rosie up the stairs is not great for me (she tore her ACL). I’m also eating so much food lol. And probably not drinking enough water.
