Marathon Weekend 2016

For fun.

QOTD: Who is going to be walking a little funny today?

Yeah I suppose we will notice most of the runners today by either medal, race shirt or "that walk"!

One of the only benefits of my slow pace yesterday is that I am walking pretty ok today.

Watching the news this morning it sounds like the humidity really had an impact this year. A significant number of runners required medical help and the winner was 15 minutes of her/his pace (report didn't specify). For myself, I chalked my race up to being a humidity wimp from the north! But I guess it was a bigger issue. Hope you all are recovering. Too soon to think about next year?

4th year in a row for my M&M McFlurry stop at mile 15. This time I also bought a Coke. Both were VERY REFRESHING! Was once again greeted by the State Trooper at the traffic light. She got out of her Patrol car and shouted with a big smile...."They ran out of McFlurry" On the way back to the race I told her I'll see her next year.

Congratulations to all.

For fun.

QOTD: Who is going to be walking a little funny today?

Me! Does anyone have the license plate of the bus that hit me and then backed over me? Ugh.

On top of that, I'm pretty sure I have Dopey-induced PTSD. I dropped @mbwhitti off at the airport this morning and passed a number of busses. I checked each one in fear that it was a Parade Bus.

Wow, that was incredible! Lots of fun and I got 13 photos with characters while still hitting a 3:52. Boy it was humid though, last 6 miles were tough.

On a side note, can anyone identify who this character was around mile 25?

Hilarious -- unbelievable "Marathon With Character Pix" PR ;)

I don't know if she has a name but she isn't like a Disney character just someone they bring out for events and like weddings and stuff.

ROTFLMAO :)

Huuuuuuumid marathon for me -- but successful. I got a 40 second PR (14 minute course PR) -- 6 minute negative split and finished 45th in my age group (that's like winning the Olympics for me). #pufyChestOldGuy ;)

Yeah that stop was Hades he was just coming out as I went by, I might be walking ok but bending down and stairs are going to be an issue everyone enjoy those medals and finally get to relax I will post more details and pics once I get home

Yeah its Hades. One of the only stops I did on the full

Yeah that stop was Hades he was just coming out as I went by, I might be walking ok but bending down and stairs are going to be an issue everyone enjoy those medals and finally get to relax I will post more details and pics once I get home

Thanks. During the race I kept thinking maybe it was Cherabog, but it wasn't till my brain cleared up later that I started thinking Hades.

Did anyone else get yelled out for having Gatorade in a picture? We were told at the evil queen that they didn't want to see a gatorade bottle in the picture. None of the other photographers seemed to care.

ATTQOD. I'm moving a little slower than I usually would. Headed to studios for a bit before we have to fly home.

This week has been a blast. My first half was a success and made me want to do a marathon now. My time wasn't that great but I don't care I was there to have fun, meet character and get that medal.

Congrats again to everyone who ran from the 5K to Dopey. They are all accomplishments and memories you'll have forever.

Sharing this post from another Disney site. Hope someone has some info.

Yesterday my friend Ed was competing in the Disney Full marathon (he was doing the Dopey Challenge, 5k, 10k, 1/2 and full marathon over the 4 days) in his hand chair (he is a disabled vet). While his car was parked at Old Key West his power assisted wheelchair was stolen off the back of his car. Please share on Instagram, FB, Twitter, any social media you can in hopes of finding his chair. #getedhischair

Didn't realize how large the starting area was and didn't recognize anyone. Very sorry for the inconvenience I may of caused anyone. Terrible run for me today. It happens

Thought I had posted to this already.

If your run was anything close to like mine, I know what you were feeling.

Don't worry about the inconvenience. There were a ton of people in there. I left the flag about 4:55 to go to the corrals. The Mickey Miles group was also meeting up there too. It was funny that I was asking anyone new that came up to the flag if they were Louisiana. We would then start chatting a little until the next people came up. Got to meet quite a few this way and hear their story or 2.

As for my run report as LSUlakes has said the run was terrible. It was no fun at all after mile 8. My not being as trained as I should have been showed.

My report is 2 words. "I Finished" enough said!!!

I made Twitter? Geez shouldve spent more time making it pretty! Had a blast cheering the dak parking lot till the balloon ladies passed...

Wish I knew that was you. I would have stopped to say hi. That was one of the best signs j had seen on course.

For fun.

QOTD: Who is going to be walking a little funny today?

ATTQOTD: This guy. Also leg cramps on its a small world is going in the books as cruel and unusual punishment.

Same here. Slow mover too. I am leaving for EPCOT in minutes. I hope to be back at Canada to meet up with everyone doing the DATW by noon. With some of the humor Disney is showing this weekend, I hope no cast member hangs a slow moving vehicle ahead sign on my back. :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Yeah, I'll echo the sentiment of everyone that said yesterday was rough. Of course, not knowing what to expect, I went in imagining worst possible scenario - it is a marathon after all!

I thought I had had hydrated well, to the point of potential over hydration - but nope, not even close. Thanks to the humidity, I was sweating more than usual and I took at least two Powerades at every stop, plus sometimes even a water or two. I went through both bottles on my hydration belt twice. I ate all of my chews and almost everything on course (except for the Clif Gels - I'm no masochist), and while the banana at mile 19 felt like the best thing I've eaten in my life, I just never really got a boost or anything from it - it more just helped me "stay moving".

My Garmin died at the disco tunnel (which, again, learning curve on charging and things), but I was keeping track of my friends up ahead until I got separated at a crosswalk switch off in Hollywood Studios by the Osborne Lights (stay hard, lights!). So, I started counting intervals in my head - which was dumb because I could've just fired up RunKeeper and put my headphones in and done it that way, but Dopey Delierium had set in and I couldn't think straight.

I came across a gal, probably in her early to mid 20s saying goodbye to friends who had come to cheer her on as she was running Goofy. She started walking next to me and then was just openly sobbing. I told her she was doing amazing, we were almost to the end and I would walk with her for a while if she wanted. She just nodded and said thank you and we walked together out of the park and down towards the turn for the Boardwalk path before she thanked me, said good luck and took off running again.

It was obvious she was doing this whole marathon alone. It just made me think - that was MY plan before @mbwhitti decided to join. I have no reason to understand why I was so lucky to have her do that, be she literally saved my Dopey. I just wouldn't have been able to do that 26.2 alone. I would've thrown my sunglasses on around mile 8 (not that they were needed almost at all yesterday), and would've cried behind them all the way until I probably got swept near ESPN.

But I didn't. We had dance breaks, sing-alongs starting at mile 7, enjoyed a slush from France as we made it around World Showcase and other moments I will treasure with me for the rest of my life.

This Dopey was hard. It felt like the races were bipolar - the 5k was AWESOME, but the 10k was a rainfest. The half was great, even though all that fog was CRAZY - like talk about not being able to see .10-mile in front of you, but the full ... that was like going to war. And people who weren't there won't understand. Finishing (and surviving) Dopey is one of my greatest personal achievements - but I'm not sure how I feel about it.

If (and it's a probably) I do it again next year, my training focus is going to be COMPLETELY different. Just like this year, I knew I could do the first three races no problem and I put more emphasis on the back-to-back aspect of the challenge. Where this failed me is it didn't give enough respect to the full. The full is a beast of its own making - and that beast took down PLENTY of runners yesterday that didn't give it enough respect in training.

Anyway. Just my thoughts from yesterday! I'm glad it's done - and it will go down as one of my favorite weekends of my life!

Finished my first marathon placing around 10,000... Which out of almost 20,000 I'll gladly accept. The last 6 miles were agony as I don't think I did enough mileage in the last month or so. However, I can still walk today, so I count it as a victory. Getting up stairs and off buses is a little difficult though.

I'm so glad you were able to complete the Dopey, @Keels. Sounds like you did a great job and what had to be done to finish and how awesome to have had @mbwhitti to help get you through it. A marathon really is a beast of its own and until you've done one it's hard to really grasp that. But, the fact is you did it and that is a great accomplishment. The next one (and you know there will be one :) ) will be better because you know what to expect.

Humidity is a killer too and you just can't underestimate how much harder it makes the run. Sounds like pretty much everyone suffered the ill effects of fighting it. Well done, everyone!!!

I finished and have never been so glad to see a finish line than I was yesterday! I turn bright red while running even in normal weather, but apparently yesterday my whole face was competing with Rudolph's nose and I was asked several times if I was ok by runners, coaches and spectators... :o

My goal was to finish the marathon faster than last year, when I had to walk about half of it due to knee issues (finished in 6:47). Even though my knee started to hurt almost right away and got quite bad at about mile 10, I could run almost pain free as long as I kept running in a more or less straight line and at a steady pace. I walked through all of the water stops and up/down the ramps, stopped for 9 or 10 pictures (I think, will have to wait for MarathonFoto to upload all pictures to be sure) and finished in 5:18:06. I am absolutely thrilled with this time although it looks like I will be paying for it for the rest of the week. In addition to my knee hurting (just sore, no injury), my right leg decided that the Marathon as part of Dopey was the best occasion to try out shin splints and it's still sore to touch. I suppose the knee issues did affect my running more than I realized and I am glad I did not have to watch myself running! :crazy2:

I am leaving for the airport in about 45 minutes, and just in time am developing a cold. After two flights I am sure this particular souvenir will make me remember the weekend even longer than the knee will.

BUT: I actually did enjoy every race apart from the last 8 miles of the marathon. The character lines were ok, I even got Mickey and Donald, and I saw some truly inspirational runners on the course. From the blind guy to the wheelchair athlete really struggling on one of the ramps and the kids running the 5k WAY faster than most of the adults. I was so grateful for not being their parent trying to keep up with them...

I will try to write up a real recap with pictures in my journal at lunch or tonight when I have a free second to breath. But I just wanted to thank everyone for all the help navigating both learning how to be a runner and how to do this thing at Disney. I am not sure I would have felt as confident without all the hand-holding and rah-rah-ing and laughs and inspiration I received here.
My 5k was a top 10 memory for me in my life. And I know that there are a lot of people who would scoff at just a 5k and even I know I am capable of more mileage. But everything about it just had me ear to ear grinning the whole time. Well maybe not the 5 minutes before my corral went off because I was a nervous wreak in that moment until I got my feet moving :) Luckily I ran into a few people to chat and that helped me focus my nerves elsewhere until it was go time.

We were out cheering the people in the half with L to P bibs and longer with F/G to L/M range for the full (at least that's what I could kinda figure out by looking at bibs) during the full. Was fun to shout at people and my daughter got into it. I had a bunch of people wave or say hi to us but no idea if any were from Dis. Or just people who were excited. I think since we were at the 5 and 6 miles areas people were still in good spirits. Glad we were there to cheer the lady in last through the castle...my daughter asked me if that lady won and I got very emotional and told her yes. Getting emotional just thinking about it.

So happy for everyone who ran whether they finished or not. Now my adventure turns towards my 8k and 10k training. I'll stop by now and again in the rundisney threads to see what everyone is up to with the other races this year and also to be supremely jealous of your bling.

I am so sorry to hear that so many people had tough races! Hopefully, when the dust settles and the leg pains subside, you will be all to look back and remember this race fondly.

For me, there was extra significance to trying my first marathon. January 2013 my weight peaked at 335 lbs and I couldn't walk more than half a mile without back pain and needing to rest. I decided enough was enough and that it was time to fix things.

Through diet and exercise, primarily walking, I lost 150 lbs and was able to return to my first sports love, playing Ultimate Frisbee in a local league.

This time last year, a very good friend convinced me to attempt the W&D half marathon with him. I thought he was crazy. I've never been a distance runner. So I started running. Ran my first 10k in April. Ran my first half in June. Decided to register for the Disney marathon in August as a BHAG then promptly tore my hamstring (you might have seen a post or two mention that), severely limiting my training.

Completing the marathon yesterday will go down as one of the highlights of my life and the last 14 miles from the entrance to Animal Kingdom to the finish line were euphoric! The fact that it happened on the third anniversary of deciding to change my life around was the icing on top.

Always believe that you can do it. If you don't like where you are, change it. It can be done!

I am not trying to minimize the aches, pains and struggles folks went through yesterday, but to provide an alternate perspective on the weekend. I appreciate all the information and support I found on this site and wish everyone the best in future races!
