Marathon Weekend 2016

Well it's Monday of race week and we only have a few easy runs left, so all we have left to worry about is the weather and travel. Hope everyone has a safe trip!

QOTD: Based on the current forecast posted earlier today. Will the weather require you to make any adjustments to your current running plans and goals?

ATTQOTD: I was originally planning to bring just 3 hydration bottle with my fuel belt, but with a muggy start, I am leaning towards adding a 4th. I know they have plenty of water stations along the course, but I have not mastered drinking from them. I more or less just get a small sip out of it. I am also thinking of adjusting my goal from a 7:45 pace to a 8:00 pace. If I feel good after mile 15 I may try to pick it up. The last thing I will do is get a easy run in the morning before the marathon just to loosen up and see how it is running in much warmer temps then what we are having currently.

I'm getting way too anxious and we don't even get to leave until Friday! I really should have booked our trip to leave earlier so I could be at Disney and not have to worry about getting there. The weather makes me anxious ... after W&D this year my major fear is around the thunderstorms. Hopefully all this worrying is for nothing. I will have to start working on my hydration now as I hate muggy and really struggle running in it.

I'm hoping packing will get me more excited and less anxious!!

QOTD: Based on the current forecast posted earlier today. Will the weather require you to make any adjustments to your current running plans and goals?

I think it will mainly adjust my hydration plan through the week. I am going to be really focused on making sure I drink plenty of water all week including when I have to fly and be in Disney! My race goal was to finish so I may just have to deal with finishing a little slower than previously hoped. I hate muggy.

I don't think so. I would much rather be running the half in a bit warmer weather than 20s-30s that have been in Wisconsin. This is my first have so I don't have any other goals than finishing and having fun.

I think I will be wearing shorts instead of capri's for sure under my running skirt (though I've packed both.) If it's really muggy I will probably ease back on my pace out the gate...as much as adrenaline will let me. I'm sure the crowds will help with that anyways. And I've already decided not to sprint the finish because no need to be sore the rest of the weekend and why not milk my time in the park a little bit.

I've seen that the Osbourne Lights have been extended to 1/6. I'm tempted but my better judgement says to relax at our hotel instead of trekking to see them. But sun-down is fairly early still even in Florida since it is winter so maybe I can talk my crew into going to see them after dinner. Just wondering if everyone will think it will be a s*&^show with crazy crowds of people since it will be the last night ever for the lights?

First of all, I am jealous of you folks that are on your way to, or already in, Orlando. I do not leave until Friday after I drop the kiddos off at school.

So the question:

I usually follow a fairly strict "nothing new on race day" philosophy, but with the weather forecast still trending towards the warmer end, I am starting to consider running with a Camelback for the marathon.m I know RD usually has plenty of drink stops, but I am a sweater when I run.

Anybody else run with a Camelback? Or take salt tablets? (Something else I have never tried.)

QOTD:

Unfortunately muggy kicks my behind, so I'll likely adjust my goal pace. For me, I add the temp + dewpoint and then adjust based on that sum. From there I'll see how I'm feeling.

Thanks for the QOTD

Disney is a "fun" race for me so I don't usually focus as much on time. I think I'll try and focus hard on pre-race hydration. To me that means drinking an extra bottle of water/gatorade a day starting on Weds.

ATTQOTD:
Not really. My outfits were planned for a range of temperatures (I'll run in long sleeves until the weather hits 80ish), and I was planning to bring my 32-oz water bottle for the 10K anyway. It's possible that I'll bring it for the 5K now too, but I think that I'll be fine with just the water stops.

Since I live in Orlando and it's pretty normal weather to me.. So haven't even started figuring out what to wear so yeah.. No changes :)

QOTD: I normally wear orange on race day... (school colors)... but I'll be in white to reflect any sun.
I'm somewhat OCD and pace myself using HR ranges. My heart rate will reel me in if conditions warrant.
Its gonna make getting a new PR that much more challenging :/

I no longer care what the weather is for race weekend ... as long as it's warmer than New York. I just got back from my last pre-race run, and I'm cold. I think this was my first sub-freezing run of this training cycle.
(Of course, I'm sure this opinion will change when I see the weather forecast)
Coldest day of the winter so far here, the windchill has us at 0ºF with lots of snow and ice. Thinking I won't mind the warmer Florida temperatures!

Nope, no changes for me. I always just rely on the aid stations for water/Gatorade and I would wear shorts for a race no matter how cold it was, so no real changes to "lighten up" my clothes.

Had decided not to take a hydration belt, but may pack it anyways. I probably won't line up with it, but will make sure to take fluid at every stop and will likely slow down to a walk at each of them to actually drink the whole cup(s).

With the projected heat I'd be okay with some rain... but please no storms.

If you're going to try something new, opt for the salt tabs over the Camelbak. They're unlikely to upset your stomach or cause any other GI issues. The Camelbak is going to change your posture & your gait if you're not used to running with one, a recipe for pain & suffering in the later miles.

I usually don't go in with much of a plan and don't have much of a plan again this year. I know it's a pretty poor way to approach distance running, but obsessing over a plan usually puts me in a bad frame of mind. I'm sure I'll go out too fast and probably not finish as quickly as I should, but getting to the finish line in one piece is always the goal. The weather looks like it could be a bit warm, but the best part of not having a plan is that the plan never gets ruined.

Thanks. That was kind of my worry (posture, chafing), but dehydration is my bigger concern. Any tips on taking salt tabs?

QOTD: Based on the current forecast posted earlier today. Will the weather require you to make any adjustments to your current running plans and goals?

Probably not. I might bring an extra clif chews stick for the added sodium/potassium, but otherwise I think I will stick with my current plan. Considering adding a pair of compression sleeves for after the race though. I've never used them before, so I won't put them on during the race, but I might have the family bring a pair for recovery afterwards.

No big adjustments for me, except I am having the tank top vs. t-shirt debate. And feeling bummed that it will feel like my regular runs here in Houston. I was really hoping for a cooler start to help my pace!
