Cheating a little bit, as this was a story from my last marathon training. I was in Honolulu for work and had an 18 mile run on the training schedule that weekend. Since the temp hits 80 the minute the sun come up on Oahu, I wanted to get an early jump since it was cold back home and my body wasn't used to the high temps. I hate early mornings, but knew I had to get out early.
I planned a nice route that followed the Ala Wai Canal for the first few miles. While listening to "3 Cabelleros" I hit one mile and all of a suddent my wedding ring slides off my finger. In slow motion, I notice it hit the sidewalk twice and 'kerplunk' into the Canal. I freak out immediately. There is about a 5 foot drop from the sidewalk to the water and a narrow ledge. I take my shoes and socks off and am standing on the ledge peering into the water. About a yard out, I see something yellow in the water. I am not sure how to get to it without getting in the water.
A local walks by and I ask if the canal is deep. She says, "Yes...and polluted." I decide I need to try to reach and step in the water. About an inch from a huge drop off, I am able to reach the ring. I was ecstatic and jumped back onto the sidewalk excitedly. A couple of tourist even walked by and took my picture it looked so strange.
So, I had my ring, but now had another 17 miles. I decide it was best to head back and shower. I then get dressed again and restart my 18 mile in the blazing sun, with my ring left in the hotel room. Since then, every time I run along that stretch, I keep my fist clenched.
I guess I could just get the ring resized, right?
