Marathon Weekend 2016

How's training this weekend everyone? I got 8 in Friday even with some snow pellets (didn't really turn into real snow though) but had to stop at 10 yesterday (Saturday), I've hurt my butt cheek somehow in the last week or so...I'm vaguely remembering backing into something and smashing my butt into something, I'm thinking the deep bruise is surfacing as I can't even sit without it hurting & then it makes my lower back ache. Don't think it was from running, crossing fingers anyway. So, my run yesterday turned into a run/walk, which was fine & now plan to take a couple days off hoping it heals.

Good job! Yes, it sounds like taking a little time to heal is a good idea. I'm hoping to get 8 in today, bringing my total to 30 this week :)

As far as training goes, I upped my game again this weekend and was able to manage 18 miles yesterday in 3:02:27. I actually went out last night and could still walk which made me feel good. ;) I certainly felt and it and I'm feeling it now, but its manageable and I have felt worse. How I feel after is a concern as well as getting through 26 miles since we are doing the CC challenge. I want to enjoy the cruise and of course be able to do the 5K.

Does anyone else find it tough to find more places to run on these long runs? I want to stay somewhat close to home in case anything ever happened but I am running out of neighborhoods, and some streets I'm doing 2 or 3 times. It gets boring!

I've been finding the same thing, not easy to find new places to run, particularly if you want to stay near home. I've found adding variety wherever possible helps, like combining 2 of your usual routes or even just running the opposite direction that you normally would. Way to go on clocking 18 miles, I hit that region for the first time in months and felt amazing!!

In distance doubling cycle next few days - I alternate between 4 days of 6-8 miles each, rest two days, 4 days distance doubling of 5k, 10k, half, 3/4 full (18-20 miles) rest two days, repeat. Today's 10k+ (6.44 miles) was 58:39:02. Half tomorrow. Dopey, CC Challenge and Rebel Challenge simulation lol

Also find it tough to find long runs so I have repeat portions to mix it up. I have a lake near house that I can lap (11 miles) and associated bike trails so I vary runs to incorporate but invariably repeat sections which is boring. There are the regular dog walkers, bike riders and runners each day so we all "check-in" with each other as we pass.

That's one crazy awesome RunDisney CV! :D

Our favorite breakfasts for pancakes or other carb-heavy foods are at Chef Mickey and O'Hana.

Thanks, not sure on my plan for the 8th yet but after the half on the 9th, I have booked Boma. Don't even want to think about how I'll feel on the 10th yet.

That's me!!! Yay! :mickeyjum

Hey everyone  ! Just got in the marathon through a TA yesterday! Holy cannoli I've got some training do.

I'm so super pumped to run this race again and hang out with @Keels

So what have a missed?

And if anyone knows me from previous threads, do we have Dooneys yet??

Welcome and I hope you have a great time, although it sure sounds like you will.

As for compression socks/sleeves. I don't have sleeves, I have full socks. I have 3 different brands. I didn't know which would be best so I bought 3 different ones this year to try them out. I have CEP, Features, and 2XU. I find CEP has held up the worst of them all. They seem to have lost some of their elasticity so they aren't as tight as they were when I first got them. The features and 2XU have held up. They are as tight now as they were initially. Features are a little thicker so they keep the foot warmer and have a bit more padding for the long runs (I don't run in them, I sleep in them for recovery). The 2XU are thinner and more breathable. And if I remember correctly I think the CEP were the most expensive and the 2XU were the cheapest. Hope that helps.

Had a great run this weeknd in the crazy weather here in Mid Michigan. We got about 10 inches of snow, but I ran early enough in the day and this was the first snow of the year. So it was not sticking to the sidewalks. It was just beautiful with lots of snow fall and safe clear roads. Awesome and inspiring run. That was Saturday morning, by Sunday it was a total mess with snow and ice everywhere. Saturday loved it, Sunday was dreaming of Florida! Is it January yet?

What is dooneys?

No pattern that I can see yet, but only three bag options

Be glad you don't know @LSUlakes it probably saves you a lot of money;) but oddly enough this discussion comes at a perfect time for me as my wife was just inquiring about pre-orders and as I see from @Keels post it appears active is the way to go for this or is there another option? and if we do want to preorder when would we need to probably do that by, she 100% wants the marathon weekend print so if we want to guarantee we get one is this the best way?

My sister gets shin splints sometimes, and it was recommended that she try compression sleeves to help with the pain (it was also recommended that she change her running form a bit, but that's been harder). Does anyone have a favorite brand/style of compression calf sleeves that they highly recommend?

We may just end up buying whatever's cheap, but if there's a particular brand that people really love, I'd think about paying a little more.

I have used both brooks and pro compression I like them both you can occasionally get a really good deal from pro compression when they do a grab bag sale you can get 3 pairs for what 1 would normally cost but since its a grab bag you don't get to pick your colors and there may be small imperfections on them though when I did it all mine where fine however one pair I got was pink but I was happy with them other than that

I stay close to home too and repeat sections, yes it's boring on longer runs! I don't really have the time to drive to trails. I could run farther into the country but then I'm at the mercy of creepy cars/drivers that I start to get paranoid as I've had a few scares in the past. I basically just "daydream" I guess as I don't listen to music anymore for safety reasons, it is always funny as the same farmer pass me multiple times :) I live in a very hilly town too so sometimes just trying to run less hills requires repeating areas, but it works.

@LSUlakes Dooney's are purses that my wife/daughter have to have!!! :P Last year's below...

Dooneys are purses/bags - they make special designs for the races weekends usually. Awesome on the 20!

Well since it's a purse, I completely understand why I had no idea what it is. That is a item that I wont have to worry about purchasing. Thanks to all for letting me know!

Who else is struggling with illness? We did the W&D quarter and then stayed at WDW until the 16th! Great trip. I only did one training run but we did about 10-15 miles a day of walking so I called that a win. Now I got sick pretty much right when I got home and this great cough came with it. I tried to do my first run yesterday and made it about 3 miles before I was coughing up my lungs. I'm starting to get really nervous for the marathon. The W&D was hard on me - I know it was probably weather related but this will be my first full and I need to get some good long runs in before so I don't feel 100% unprepared.

I'm dealing with some sort of a cold, but nothing major. I only cough when I stop running, so I'm motivated to keep going and just cough up my lungs at the end of the run. Hope you feel better soon. The rule I have been told when it comes to running with a cold is, if its above the neck = run, below = reduce miles/intensity or no running. Drink lots of OJ and if you have to skip a run, make it a shorter distance, if you need a extra day of rest because you feel bad, do so. Do not skip the long run.

id rather make sure I get solid fluids in me
If you are trying to swallow ice cubes that could be the problem.... :)

Question for the experienced marathon runners...

Do you typically wear your trainers for marathons or do some of you get more of a flat? For most all of my races, including 3 of my 4 halves, I've worn Saucony A5 flats. These are incredibly comfortable and I had no issues wearing them for 13.1. However they may be too minimal for a full. Just curious if most experienced runners here stuck to full blown training shoes for the full or something else.
I usually run my halfs and fulls in the boston Boost which is the same shoe I was for speedwork and tempos. I do my long and relaxed runs in energy boosts which are about 1.5 oz's heavier but have the same 9mm drop.
I the a5s are working for you I don't know that i'd change it up. I actually did my speedwork in A5s for a while at the recommendation of a running coach, but I found I liked a little more cusion than what they provide. Have you ever worn the A5's on a 16 or 16+ long run? How did you feel after that?

I'm sorry to hear that you've got a pain in the rear.
This was a big week for me. Thursday it was raining a buddy was still willing to go out and do 8 with me. I crossed 1500 miles for the year on that run which is a new record for me. it went from drizzle to torrential downpour mid run so we were both completely drenched when we finished.

We did an 18 ish Sat and 9 Sunday. One of the guys commented "you know you've hit a milestone in your running training, when you start running past places that you normally wouldn't drive to because they are too far away."

I have a shopping need, and rather than blindly buy whatever is cheapest, I figured I'd ask the experts here if they have any favorites...

We may just end up buying whatever's cheap, but if there's a particular brand that people really love, I'd think about paying a little more.
So for compression I've tried CW-x sleeves and sock, addidas sleeves, CEP Socks, Pro-compression socks, and saucony and asics socks. While I really like CW-X tights I think the socks and sleeves don't provide enough compression. I would say the same about the adidas, saucony and asics compression stuff. (those were all my cheap compression purchases). Of the stuff I have I like the CEP socks I've since bought 2 more pairs and most of my running group where the sleeves. The pro-compression provide good compression, but they are shorter than the CEP socks so I don't like them as much. I don't think that would matter with sleeves. My wife has the zensah sleeves and likes them. I would recommend your sister going and getting measured so that she buys the right size so that she gets the right amount of compression.

TL: DR version. A lot of the cheap stuff probably won't do what she wants. Zensah and CEP are two really good brands, pro-compression is not far behind. Get measured because buying the wrong size will make the purchase worthless.

LOL, cavepig. That was me Saturday but with landscapers, not farmers. I ran by some working in a yard twice and then they must have finished and drove by me. It was getting awkward. ;)

sammykster, feel better! And I felt the same at W&D. I wasn't the least bit worried about doing the half and while I was bummed the course got shortened, I can't say I wasn't happy going from mile 2 to 8. That was tough that night! I agree the weather affected me and I think the mental state too. So now thinking 4 times that...UGH! But after doing 18 this weekend, and surviving it I'm building some confidence. Once you recover and do some long runs, I'm sure you will feel better too! Hang in there!

No pattern that I can see yet, but only three bag options.

Do they generally have more sizes available at the expo? I was hoping for a cross body type for the parks. The big bag prices don't surprise me but the wristlets for $115 seems steep to me. (Says the girl with a coach purse next to her that we won't discuss how much that cost)
Other question: is picking up a pre ordered bag way faster than buying one there. I don't want to spend a ton of time at the expo and wasn't going to buy any special merch. Maybe one day when I do one of the big distance runs :)

Likely faster, yes. Unless all the pre-orders happen to go at the same time. But for PHM the line was like 25 min just to enter the dooney area, and then check out on top of that. I have a feeling when all was said and done I spent 45-60 min just for the purse. (I still use it every disney trip though!). However, l don't think you can use your AP or disney visa 10% off unless you go buy in person.

No. What they have for pre-order is what they will have available. They had 5 silhouettes to choose from this year and had a TON left over (they were for sale in Downtown Disney for weeks after the race weekend is over)...so while I'm not surprised that they cut down the types available, I AM surprised at the price jump. $115 to $280ish is such a HUGH range...I think they should have some sort of option available closer to $200.

And what is up with the prices? I thought maybe they had tax factored in, but the wristlets retail for $98 and Florida tax isn't 18% (to get to $115). I went through pretending to buy a wristlet and it still tacked on an additional 6.5% in Active.com fees (total price was $123ish)...:confused3

And pre-order pick-up can sometimes be faster, but not always. They have a separate table for the pre-orders, so it just depends on how many people are in line. When I picked mine up this year it wasn't any faster than the non-pre-orders.

This is true. What you CAN do is pre-order, then get in line to return and re-purchase your bag, using your discount. So you get the AP discount that way, but you wouldn't get the Active.com fees back.
