Marathon Weekend 2016

I never get race emails anymore even though I'm signed up. I get the emails to buy new races, but once they have my money ... NADA. Oh well. I know most of the information first anyway, either from the boards or their website. :)

I've had zero motivation to do any running since Avengers. :( I'm giving myself the week and plan to re-motivate next week.
 
A pricey run retreat! I know it's the happiest place on earth but still...

Tell me about. I signed up for it one night when it seemed like a really good idea ... :(

I'm waiting for the email if they announce a pre-event. That will be my Christmas present to myself.
 
I keep seeing the 10-minute post-race massage listed under the Race Retreat Package. Two years ago the post-race massage tent was open to all racers. Has that changed?

Curious about that too, it's the one thing I'd really like at the end of each race!
 
I didn't take your comment as negative at all. I asked for input and got a variety of great tips and suggestions. I certainly won't sweat it if I am late to my ressie or have to cancel (no show) cause I'm still on the course. The initial reason for this trip is for me to experience my first marathon. The great byproduct of the trip is that my favorite people will be there with me for that day and the week afterwards. I hope I can make it to the late breakfast to download things with them, but if it doesn't happen I'm not gonna be upset... I'll be in Disneyworld right?

OK good. I'm glad. And you are 100% CORRECT. You will be at Disneyworld and as long as you are willing to miss that ADR, if needed, then you are good to go IMO. That's all I was concerned about. Now just kill it and get the time you want and none of this will matter.

I'm struggling big time with motivation as well. I went out today with a goal of 10 miles. I did 5. I was in such pain I had to cut it short. I was in pain several weeks back and then suddenly it stopped. I have figured why. It is the treadmill. I ran on the treadmill Sunday night. My right leg hurt instantly and it was still hurting today. But I am still struggling with motivation. It has to be the shorter days. I am more tired in general. It's colder. I have been trying to restart P90X again for cross training and I can't bring myself to do this either. I am going to be in trouble in January if I don't fix this SOON.

It may be expensive sitting here right now. But if it is in the 30's again like last year you will feel like a genius in that heated tent. Not to mention you get real, private bathrooms, not porta potties. You also get some food whereas the rest of us either have to eat at 3am in our rooms or bring it with us to the race. Michelle, from the Mickey Miles Podcast, does race retreat and says it is worth every penny.

I'm not concerned about bib #s ... The question is, will they tell us about the new course before the race actually starts?

The absolute latest we'll see the new course is when the event guide comes out. So roughly a few weeks before the event. But I will bet so done will find it before hand and post it.

I've seen both. Personally I hate carrying anything more than necessary and I only carry a few gu gels. The water stops are frequent and well-stocked, so I just grab water at them. If you have trouble drinking on the run, it's OK to walk for a few steps while you drink. You won't lose that much time. Even some very fast marathoners do this. Again, just personally, I would rather walk through the water stops if necessary rather than carry anything.

Likewise. Too much extra stuff mean more weight, not a fan. RunDisney events are loaded with stops so for these race I carry very little, almost like emergency supplies rather than race supplies.
 
Hey you doctors out there I need some help diagnosing some pain. It is obviously running related but since I suck at anatomy I just can't figure it out. Ever since the Disneyland half marathon in september I've had this waist pain that makes it hard to run. After the first few miles it warms up and I can't feel it but if I stop and start then it hurts again. Basically the pain is above the groin area, above but below the waist and only in the middle front. It feels like a bruise or maybe muscle related but I cant explain it better. I dont feel anything lower like in the legs or inner thigs, just this front area...sort of where you'd have a belt buckle. I'm wondering if it was caused by my fit belt with my phone inside it bouncing up and down. It has held me back a little although I did PR the last half with a 1:50 time, but I'd like to figure it out before the marathon so it doesn't hold me back again. Any ideas?

Best to go to a sports doctor or your GP for a formal diagnosis. But that sounds kind of like something in the hip area?
 
it's not the hip, it is just muscle pain. literally once I'm warmed up it goes away, but takes a couple of miles.

it is a pain you'd feel if you were doing crunches.

I guess I just have to rest it after the Dopey - it was getting better recently and then i had another race so it flared back up. Plus now I have to force myself to try to strengthen my core.

I'm debating on a belt with 2 bottles that could be refilled, a hand-strapped bottle that could be refilled, or relying only on the stops. I've never raced with bottles of any kind and only used the stops in my halves. But I'm not really a pro at drinking fast from those cups and would love to sip at my leisure... but a belt seems like more than I want to deal with. Maybe the hand-strapped bottle is a happy balance.

I usually bring my belt with 2 10 0z bottles to my halfs and will bring it with me to Disney as well, I am the type that likes to have water available whenever I might want some and I use my belt on all my training runs anyway so I am used to running with it, also gives me a nice handy place to store my clif bloks or gu's, I will also still use the aid stations and I am in the camp of walking thru them to get the drink down without wearing it.

So ... I didn't get this runDisney email. What (if anything) am I missing?

Personally, I'd even take it one step further and say that (Relative Workout Pace Intensity x Time) matters more than weekly mileage or distance of long run. But, they all play an important role when viewed as a harmonious balanced plan.

Right. Just trying not to complicate matters. Most people are endurance limited, so the best training plan for them simply is "run more, mostly easy."

Now that fueling has come in, does anyone on here plan to run the marathon with a hydration belt or do most people take in water/powerade just at the stops? I'm debating on a belt with 2 bottles that could be refilled, a hand-strapped bottle that could be refilled, or relying only on the stops. I've never raced with bottles of any kind and only used the stops in my halves. But I'm not really a pro at drinking fast from those cups and would love to sip at my leisure... but a belt seems like more than I want to deal with. Maybe the hand-strapped bottle is a happy balance.

Another option is to buy a disposable sport bottle with a squeeze top and chuck it when you're done. No need to be carrying extra stuff around with you. But I approach it a little differently ... the bottom halves of these are detachable. Just stick it (the bottom part) in a cup from the water station, pinch the top of the cup and sip away without worrying about dumping gatorade up your nose (any fatter straw will work, so it's fine to just grab some from the food court instead)

Unless you know of a Super Secret Race Retreat, the Race Retreat restrooms are porta-potties, too. What's nice is they are exclusive for the retreat attenders ("retreaters"?) but they're not real bathrooms like at the park. Even with that, lines can be long as people get set to make the loooong journey to the start line (and the women's line is usually longer).

But the retreat is heated, sheltered, and stocked with food. All-in-all, my wife and I like it.

Last year I got to go into the united pre-race retreat at the ny marathon. It was so cold and windy they had to take the side of the tent so no heat built up inside it. The warmest place was inside the port a potties so people just took turns going into them to warm up.

No, I must be getting it confused with another race. I heard it in a podcast and it sounded like something Disney would do. My apologies for the incorrect info. And it wasn't bathrooms in the parks. They bring in trailers that have real bathrooms on them. But once again, obviously the wrong race.

Take it from someone who waited too long to go to the doctor, I would go sooner than later. I had a similar pain last year and I have a belly button hernia. I wear a tight jock strap now and no pain. Don't deal with it any longer than needed. I still have the hernia, it doesn't need to be fixed, I just got the right attire and I'm good now. Its like my foot. I stubbornly fought through it as long as I could. Once I went to the doctor and he told me to stretch my calves and it would help. I stretch it twice a day and the pain is gone now. You might find a simple solution and then run pain free through Dopey.
 
I'm not going to the doctor until after Dopey, at the earliest. I don't trust them and it does get better with rest so they'll probably tell me that. I just don't need thw aggrevation of being told to run less, can't do it right now...I'll run less during the taper period.
