Marathon Weekend 2016

I'm not going to the doctor until after Dopey, at the earliest. I don't trust them and it does get better with rest so they'll probably tell me that. I just don't need thw aggrevation of being told to run less, can't do it right now...I'll run less during the taper period.

If you don't trust your doctor, I'd recommend finding a new doctor.

I trust my doctor with my life....literally!

Running less during a taper is to allow your body to rest & recover from your peak workouts, not to hopefully recover from an injury. You'd be much better off healing your injury now than by continuing to run through it.

Look, I'm only asking if someone has had this and if so what did they do to heal it. Rest is obviously the best and likely only solution, but there may be other things that have worked like stretches, etc and that's all I'm curious about.

I'm going to start by saying that going to a doctor is the best thing to do.
That said ... you said initially that you think it might be the belt you wear - try running without the belt, that may actually be the solution. If it doesn't help ... I like the WebMD Symptom Checker - if you put in your symptoms, it'll give you some possible causes. It might not help (a doctor would be much more helpful), but it might give you some idea of what you might be dealing with, and then googling could give you some possible solutions.

I do think you should see a doctor ... but I'm one of those people who also delays going to the doctor, and I kinda get why you don't want to be knocked out of the game right now, so I'm not going to be super pushy about it. Just understand that if you're taking advice from people/doctors who haven't examined you personally, in the long run it might end up hurting more than it helps.

Hey you doctors out there I need some help diagnosing some pain. It is obviously running related but since I suck at anatomy I just can't figure it out. Ever since the Disneyland half marathon in september I've had this waist pain that makes it hard to run. After the first few miles it warms up and I can't feel it but if I stop and start then it hurts again. Basically the pain is above the groin area, above but below the waist and only in the middle front. It feels like a bruise or maybe muscle related but I cant explain it better. I dont feel anything lower like in the legs or inner thigs, just this front area...sort of where you'd have a belt buckle. I'm wondering if it was caused by my fit belt with my phone inside it bouncing up and down. It has held me back a little although I did PR the last half with a 1:50 time, but I'd like to figure it out before the marathon so it doesn't hold me back again. Any ideas?

it's not the hip, it is just muscle pain. literally once I'm warmed up it goes away, but takes a couple of miles.

it is a pain you'd feel if you were doing crunches.

I guess I just have to rest it after the Dopey - it was getting better recently and then i had another race so it flared back up. Plus now I have to force myself to try to strengthen my core.

Hi Z-Knight,

I've had a lower ab problem that sounds similar to yours. My lower abs will feel sore when I start up sometimes but then go away after just a few minutes of running. Usually it feels the most sore about a half hour or so after I've gone on a pretty long or hard run. It also hurts some when I do crunches or sit-ups.

I got it from doing too much plank work on my abs this past spring. I also had an inner thigh (groin) problem that arose from the same thing. The thigh problem's gotten much better from time off of doing sit-ups/ab-work and very gently stretching that area. The lower ab problem is taking more time. It's very hard to stretch your lower abs without over stretching them, so I hardly try to stretch them anymore. I took a few days off of running in the summer but that didn't seem to do anything to help.

My only suggestion is to not do any sort of ab-work for now - no crunches, sit-ups, planks. Time should help heal it also. So far my problem has not hurt my running ability at all.

Hold up - no need for attitude when people are just expressing concern AND advising you (rightly so) to see a doctor. None of us are doctors and taking medical advice from a Disney message board is probably something I wouldn't do, but anyway ...

It sounds like it's possibly a hernia with some sort of protusion (like an intestine). It's more painful at the beginning, until the protusion settles and then it's a mild annoyance afterwards.

My husband had one a few years back and was given the option of rest and "playing through it" - in fact, the doctor even said he could "find a quiet place and use his fingers to manipulate the intestine back into place for comfort" or he could have surgery.

At this point, some extra rest isn't going to keep you from finishing Dopey, but surgery because you pushed through an injury you didn't have diagnosed will keep you from even toeing the line.

I'm not trying to have an attitude, I'm simply saying that I know the doctor is the easy answer but I'm only asking if people have experienced something similar and what they did. I'm not going to waste my time with doctors for my own reasons and I'm quite confident that this is not a hernia or intestinal protrusion. It is a muscle pain that doesn't occur when twisting, so it it rules out sports hernia, etc. As I said, it had gone away with the lower training schedule after the Dumbo Double Dare but has gotten stretched out or aggravated again recently so besides rest what were people doing. @Orange Team suggested something that I don't purposely stretch it now, and that's good advice because I probably would have done the opposite, so thank you. I think the combination of the high bridge uphill climb is what caused the return of the pain - because I was fine just before it. Anyway, I won't be doing climbs for a while so it should hopefully begin to die down again.

So....What places are people planning to "carbo load" at. I'm not doing any ADRs so only quick serve and staying at All-Star Sports. So figure one pasta dinner there. Also, I love Riverside's Pasta Your Way so we'll eat there for sure. I can't think of any in park quick places that have pasta or rice dishes that are vegetarian for me (I saw Pizzafari added pasta it but it says meat sauce & I'll just get pizza there). Maybe a baked potato at the Liberty Square cart for a snack or extra meal, I like to eat so want to plan :0

I am not a vegetarian per se, but I tend to not eat much meat. So meat sauces drive me crazy! I have had the pasta at pizzafari though, so I want to say they had a marinara sauce option. That was back in February though before PHM. Maybe Katsura Grill? They have white rice and steamed vegetables (as sides) that you could combine, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a veggie sushi roll either. Also the Via Napoli pizza window. And while it is a restaurant, I have heard you can sit at the bar at Il Mulino over at the Swan and order pasta.

I'm going to fill my spi-belt with chef Boyardee Ravoli and walk around the park eating them all day...

I couldn't find anything similar for the in park options

Carbo loading the night before your race is generally not the best approach. You'll be better off having a big pancake breakfast the morning of the day before the race and a small, easy to digest dinner that night. Eating a lot of carbs the night before usually just leaves you feeling full & bloated in the morning.

Portobello in Disney Springs is where I will be.

Well I guess I should have added all the days I'm there as I get in on the 5th & have Dopey and want more than just a "sandwich" or "salad" for dinners....but... I can actually eat a pasta dinner around 4:30/5 the night before and feel fine early, done it many times. I normally eat either pasta, rice, or potatoes for dinners, I like my carbs.

Sounds like a good plan ;) & Thanks for that link!

Via Napoli Pizza Window? I thought that was only for a short time after it opened...does it really exist?

Long steep hills will aggravate my lower ab problem about a half hour after I finish running, so I started to avoid long steep hills for a while. It was worse in the summer and much better now.

Have you tried a yoga class? I know it's not everyone's cup of tea and can be a bit intimidating if you haven't been to a class before but prior to doing hot yoga I had terrible back pain and my posture wasn't great. Some of the stretches they do and moves you learn to work/relax different muscles can help a lot. Be sure to let them know where you are experiencing pain though so that you don't end up making it worse.
