Marathon Weekend 2016

::yes:: I retell this story all the time, because that weekend seriously scarred me for life, lol! I wasn't running, but I was at WDW that 2010 marathon weekend and happened to be up and out early the morning of the half... I'll never forget getting into my car at the resort and trying to make sense of the little blobby, crystal-y things pelting down on my windshield... and the 20+ year northerner in me finally pulling it out of memory, "OMG, it's SNOWING!!!!!" Then getting to the TTC and seeing some half finishers on the monorail; they literally looked blue-toned, they were so devoid of color, and shivering harder than I thought was humanly possible. I couldn't even imagine being in their shoes. Since then, I've amassed a huge collection of potential throwaway race clothes, plus a lifetime supply of mylar blankets, just in case, lol!

MY wife and my in-laws were supposed to be running too. My wife saw the big green/pink blob on the weather radar when we woke up in the morning and went back to bed. My MIL got off the bus at the start, stood in the sleet for 10 seconds, and turned around and got right back on the bus.

I strongly suspect I'd have done the same!

Does anyone know if the new ban on adults wearing costumes will apply to races as well?

http://www.wdwinfo.com/news/metal-detectors-now-in-place-at-walt-disney-world-theme-parks/

"Costumes will not be allowed for anyone over age 14."

Also, does anyone think there will be metal detectors to get into the runner areas before the race? I'm guessing that may cause some seriously long lines, even if it's just selective screening.

There always has been a ban on costumes for adults in the parks outside of the races and special events (24 hr party). This isn't something new, they have turned away people for showing up in costume before on non event days. So no it shouldn't affect the races because it's not a new rule.

Maybe there was a change in age. But I remember reading years go about this rule. And the no mask rule which apparently they will be cracking down on and might actually affect the races.

Good point. I'm hoping that they will stick to that rule; half the fun of the runDisney races is seeing all the awesome costumes!

Oh no!! That's awful - especially for a company to do it right before the holidays!

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you to find something quickly - something bigger and better.

Oh wow, I'm so sorry to hear this! I really hope you can find an awesome job soon and find a way to make it down for the marathon!

I'm so sorry! I hate that companies do this at this time of year. Mine did the same thing a few years ago. It sucks. I hope something pops for you soon!

I'm really sorry to hear that. I sure wish you the best. Can you do seasonal or temp. work for a couple weeks? It's not the way you planned to spend this time of year, I'm sure. But, your quoting of "If you had a chance to change your fate would you" might serve as inspiration. Best to you, and hang in there.

No! No! No! Can't believe it!
Really really hope you find a way.

Sending good thoughts and pixie dust!

Wow I wish you the best in finding something.

Oh no! Sorry to hear this. I hope it all works out for you.

Oh no! I am so sorry and hope you find something sooner rather than later.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Are you going to be able to get a refund for any of your travel expenses?

Dang, I'm so so sorry. Hopefully something will work out.

That's awful. I am sorry to hear that. Can you get unemployment until you find something at least? How is the economy in your area? I hope you find something soon!!!

So sorry to read that. Hope you can find something quickly.

I am so sorry to hear this! I really hope something works out for you. What a horrible time of year for layoffs!

we are park hoping that day but plan to break for a bit right around this time and we are staying at AoA so I should be able to pop over and at least say hi to whoever might be there

awful news, I really hate when companies do that this time of year not that there's ever a good time but during the holidays is especially nasty

I am so sorry to read this and wish you well in your job search. Stay positive.

I am so sorry to read this. Hope you are able to find something you like to do.

Very rough news at a bad time -- I'm so sorry this is happening... and happening now :(

I'm really sorry to hear that. But I bet the future will bring you something bigger and better. Don't give up!

I'm so very sorry to read this. I hope that it turns out to be a path to better things for you.

I know I am very late on this reply, but I did want to wish you well. I went through a very similar situation a few years ago and just wanted to wish you luck seeking new opportunities. Good luck and I hope something comes up soon and you are able to make your trip to Disney.

Very late in responding, but I wanted to thank everyone for their well wishes. I'm in the process of working with a recruiter and sending my resume everywhere. I'm fortunate that I did get a small severance.

In keeping with my tag line, (HT to @Outonarun for pointing this out to me) my husband and I are exploring all options, including making a move back to my hometown to take advantage of a potentially better opportunity back there.

On the marathon front, I'm taking a much-needed break from sending resumes to go on a long run today, and I'm working on a super-budget option to just go down for
the weekend rather than going for the entire week. Won't be as fun as what I had originally planned for us, but I think I can make it work so I won't have to miss out on my first marathon. My custom-ordered marathon singlet arrived from Etsy yesterday, and rather than being sad, I decided to remain positive and look at what I can do to make a short trip work. Just a little extra inspiration (btw - my shirt has the "Brave" quote on the front). Thanks again for all the kind words and support.

My magic bands were tracked as "delivered to front door" on Monday but we never got them. I waited and waited for a neighbor to drop them off (our mail is really really bad at delivering us all the wrong packages.) But nothing. I even creepily drove down our street staring at front porches looking for a disney-ish box. So I called Disney today and they are re-sending our bands in next few days so hopefully it works out. I have this weird image of someone eviley wearing all my bands and cackling. Of course now they will show up today since I did that.

Literally the exact same thing happened to me. They said they were delivered Monday...they were not. I had a trial to prep for and attend so I didn't have time to deal with it. But today I am going to start making some calls. Glad they sent new ones! My only concern is that I booked on rented DVC points. So I am not sure if they will give me a hard time :(

This x10000000

I'm starting to really question my ability to finish this in a few weeks time. I've taken about 10 days off, it band, and went for a gentle 3k run yesterday and felt so unfit. Today I'm pretty achey and feel like all my training since March has gone to waste. I know this is pretty irrational but I'm genuinely a bit worried to try a 5k tomorrow just in case 1. My knee hurts 2. It was a bad as the 3k. All my excitedness has completely gone and it makes me sad!

Merchandise/t shirt reveal would probs take the edge off!

I was off almost 3 weeks and I'm doing the half. To get back into it I did a week of shorter runs (1, 2, 5) and I will do a 7 and a 9 before tapering for the half. Try doing some short runs at a slower pace to ease back into it, and then slowly get back up to your distance on the long runs. After those couple short runs I finally started feeling less groggy and my body was worked back into the routine without pushing too hard and injuring myself. I could go further than 9, but I already know I can finish so I won't risk it!

So far, the runDisney website hasn't changed any of its costume rules...

posted by Rachel Gurwitz on the Team #RunDisney page in response to the story on security measures (concerning costumes):
"I have heard from runDisney. They say they are still determining how this will affect races and how it will be implemented. They are waiting for the policy to be officially set and then he says they will communicate what it will be through all means possible. I'm sure they are scrambling to decide how this will work for them. RunD is actually very separate from the Disney company and they simply have to follow all Disney rules."

Take that for what it's worth. It's far easier to come down hard on day 1 and walk it back than it is to start soft and harden up over a few weeks.

edit: a CM also posted, stating that as of right now the ban includes all runDisney events

Okay genuine question because I checked both parks websites. It doesn't mention whether or not it's applicable to events or not just that there's a costume ban. Which I always had the impression was a rule there just going to enforce it more.

For the races or the Halloween party I can't see this going over well.

On the bright side only one of my planned outfits could be classified as Disney themed (Captain America) so I should be okay.

ETA: Never mind saw your commend about Disney bounding. This whole thing seems a little odd.

I mean if someone is going to Disney Bound they might have a problem. But like things for the races or the Halloween party I can't see this going over well.

According to the Orlando Sentinel it includes the Halloween parties. Other than the above I haven't seen anything about the runDisney events.

According to several posts on Twitter Disney bounding is still allowed.

Yeah I just saw the Orlando Sentinel thing. That's going to be interesting.

Anyone want to try reaching out to runDisney and see what they say? I'm mid transit to London or else I would do it myself.
