Making The Dean's List: Do You Announce In Local Newspaper?

Side story on the smalltown papers. I had a friend who used to amuse our whole group of friends by sending stories home to her parent's paper where we were featured. "X and a group of her friends went camping....":rotfl2: She was 27 at the time and, although she visited, she hadn't lived in her "hometown" since she left high school.

Our local paper does this sort of thing and I enjoy reading the fluff page of academic accomplishments, just like I love to read about engagments, really in all truth I always thought that anouncing your getting married was kind of silly, who cares who's going to get married 18 months from now, but to the people itself it's their keepsake memories.

Heck if one of my dd made the deans list, I would have took out a front page headline. :faint:

The college notifies the paper directly. You don't have to do it.

And it's an extremely common practice.

Same thing around here, the colleges send out press releases to the hometown papers for dean's lists, any sports/activities you might be involved with, etc. It is pretty much advertising for the university/college and very common.

I agree about the engagements. To me, that seems sillier than the Dean's list.

No the silliest thing is the little kids birthdays...

The ads usually go like this:

Happy 2nd Birthday (Insert Child name)- complete with HUGE picture.
Nana and Pop Pop, Grandmom, Granpop, Mommy, Daddy, Every Aunt and Uncle, Great Granpop, and every cousin (at least 10-15 named) loves you. We love your cut cheeks, sweet dimples and happy face... blah blah blah..

Happy Birthday! From (Insert all the names in the ad )

Mind you, the child doesn't read yet!

Many many moons ago when I was in college, I went to a small private college and when I made it, they did not print it.. and neither did my mom. The college did send a letter home and they did acknowledge it at graduation.

My DD just did straight A's this semester in college so I know she made it as well. I haven't heard anything with her college; however, she is only in the community college. I don't plan on putting it in the papper, but I would like to get a letter from the college or something as my mom did. I am wondering if they are waiting until she graduates :confused3

So to answer your question.. no do not put it in the paper.. it is sort of like bragging too much. If the college does it, that is different..

My DH just graduated last month from a community college. When he got on the Dean's list, he received certificates and a letter accompanying the certificates.

My university mails the certificates and the letter comes with it. At graduation, all the graduation honors stood up together. For example, the cum laude, the magna cum laude and then the summa's stood up.

I don't find it obnoxious at all. I agree, hard work is hard work.

Why should the local baseball kids' team be honored by being congratulated in the paper, but not the kid who worked at having good grades?

I have never heard of this before. The college I attended and the one I attend now do not do this either. It doesn't even make the campus papers.

I never heard of announcing such a thing in the newspaper.

Me either.

Oh no. That's not half as silly as the small community ones: Betty Sue had out-of-town relatives in this past weekend. They picnicked at the state park. A good time was had by all.

See, I'd like to see something along those lines for a change. In our local paper (Orlando Sentinel), it's so and so shot so and so last night over a pair of tennis shoes or so and so held up a Taco Bell and terrorized the employees for $30. That's the mild stuff!

I'd much rather see the silly stuff!

No kidding. I was :scared1: reading this thread. I have never heard of such a thing. I get the paper and I don't think I've ever seen this type of thing. :confused3 Of course I think wedding, anniversary and engagement announcements are odd enough.

Maybe it is a small town thing? I think my SIL mentioned something about her parents doing something when she graduated HS.

I grew up in Chicago and never remember stuff like that growing up.
