Making The Dean's List: Do You Announce In Local Newspaper?

in the grand scheme of things it might be nice if more newspapers published these lists-at least then when my mother starts of a phone call to me with "did'nt you go to school with such and such cuz i read his/her name in the paper"-she would have an alternate reason to their being arrested or dying to have seen their name (apparantly either noone i ever went to school with has become engaged, married or had a child such to warrant a mention in the local news or my mother ignores those sections in favor of the obits and the police log:rolleyes: :rotfl: ).

Ugh, I would have been mortified if my being on the Dean's list had been published in the newspaper.

Our nearby schools release the information to hometown newspapers. I know that parents can do it as well because they have a whole college/job section where things like that are announced, and even job promotions.

I have to say that I was an adult when I graduated from college, and graduated magna cum laude. A big deal to me, but only to me. My uncle (whom I hate) asked me if I wanted him to put a write up in the paper, and I told him in no uncertain terms that he was to NOT do that. Well, he did it, and I was furious. :furious: <--- yes I would have burst into flames if it had been possible. :p

So, to me it's really up to the student. If the student is proud of the accomplishment and wants the world to know -- then do it! They deserve it. But if they'd rather you didn't, then I would respect those wishes too.

Something similar happened to me. I was mortified.

Tiffer, just wanted to say the Friends in your siggy is great.
I laughed so hard when I read the last line. :rotfl:

It's sp true. I am THAT person who laughs inappropraitely when someone falls! I can't help myself.

Why? Hard work is hard work, and good work is good work, no matter where it is done.
:thumbsup2

I have 2 in college right now. One is in a state college, and one is in a private college. Both work equally as hard, and I'm proud of both of them.
BTW, when my oldest made the Dean's List I found out about it by reading it in the local paper:upsidedow .

I'm an inappropriate laugher too! It's terrible. At least when I'm at a funeral, I can hide my face and make it look like I'm crying. :rotfl2:

Anyway, sorry to hijack.

My college put Dean's list students into the paper based on a press release form that we signed when we first registered. It included a list of local papers.

Why would anyone be mortified if their name was mentioned for being on the Dean's List? Are you not proud of your hard work? I was always happy to see it. If people thought it was obnoxious, perhaps they should have worked harder

I also don't understand why only certain schools should be listed. Someone goes to Harvard so it's okay to say how well they are doing, but someone goes to a state school and their education isn't worth mentioning? Talk about obnoxious :snooty:

I've been in Dean's List consistently (every semester) since 2005. I have never announced it.

I also see scholarship awards listed in the paper. I didn't list mine either.

Graduation honors are listed in the paper. I didn't announce mine (summa cum laude) either.

I'm very proud of my hard work. But I'm a very low-key person and I don't like to draw attention to myself. I celebrate my successes in private. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

No you're not the only one.

I know the colleges near me put names in the paper of who made the Dean and Presidents list.

Little story: I am 35 and went back to school online a few years ago and finally received my AAS degree at a local college in my state last year. Well apparently the school put the names in the paper that made the Dean and presidents list and my name was one of them. I had no idea until my dad went to the pharmacy and while he was waiting for his perscription to be filled the women behind the counter said "Do you have a daughter that made the Presidents list?" My dad stood there and was like "I have a daughter in college but she is 35"....LOL That was quite embarressing to say the least for me ;)

That's the way it works around here.

Here too. I really don't know what the big deal is. It is not front page news, it is a small font, small size; you would have to look for it to find it. Now getting on the Dean's List is a big deal, congrats to everyone who shares that accomplishment!

Well, technically, you just announced it here! :cheer2: ! Congratulations!

Our paper list all the local honor rolls (elementary - high school), a 4.0 list, and the local kids who are on the dean's list of several state schools.

It doesn't bother me a bit. However, it would never occur to me to notify them myself if my kid's school wasn't on their list.

I think this partially depends on the size of the paper and the community. In my hometown (around 10,000 residents), it's quite common for these things to be printed; sometimes it comes from the parents and sometimes from the universities themselves. I always resisted this as a child and my parents acquiesced until I graduated from law school. They decided to make up for the fact that I'd never let them "announce" anything via the local rag by sending the paper this huge article... which the paper printed. I was kind of shocked that they printed it; a full half-page article about my academic accomplishments seemed a little ridiculous. Must have been a slow news day. I think my mother emailed, mailed, or faxed a copy to everyone she knows. I was more than a little embarrassed.
