Making Chocolate Covered Pretzel Rods

Oh my those are like heaven. Can't find them often here in Michigan thou.

That sounds like buckeyes. At least that's what we call them in Ohio. They're small round peanut butter balls dipped in chocolate, and they look like a buckeye. I forget what all goes into the peanut butter, but I think at least one of the ingredients is powdered sugar.

I melt my chocolate in the crock pot, it works out great. First I do white chocolate then milk chocolate. I never have to worry about the chocolate thickening .:goodvibes

What a great idea! I make these for Christmas and I never thought of that.

Thanks for bumping this thread :)

Ohh, thanks for bumping this up, I'm going to try these this year.

How well do the sticks & truffles travel? I'd love to make some to take with us to SIL's for Thanksgiving but they'd need to be ok for an overnight car trip in a cooler.

:santa: Found this thread from last Christmas! Makes me hungry for chocolate covered pretzels.

We made some last year. One thing I found out is that if I dipped the pretzels in caramel, I had to wait until that kind of set before putting the chocolate on. I'm not sure how the peanut butter would work - I would think it would just melt off when the hot chocolate hit it. Anybody? princess:

Last year I made some pretzel rods with peanut butter, but I just stirred it into my melted chocolate. Or you could also melt together some chocolate chips and butterscotch chips. Hope this info helps... :goodvibes

I'm so excited to make these this year! We wandered over to Goofy's Candy Kitchen on our May 2008 trip to DW and used snack credits for the covered pretzels. It was the second best treat of the entire trip (Main Street Bakery - ice cream sandwiches were a little more "heavenly").

I just bought some of these at Michaels:

I have used them before and they are a HUGE hit with the kids and very easy to use!

 Wow, those Wilton tree molds for the pretzels look cool! How much of the pretzel sticks out though? I wouldn't want it to just cover the top and have a whole bunch of plain pretzels sticking out.

:santa:

I was wondering how you melt the chocolate in the crockpot?

Also, for those who drizzle colored chocolate after dipping your pretzels- how do you do this? My dd and I tried melting the chocolate and drizzling with a fork but we just got big chunks instead of pretty lines.

Finally, how many of you lay them flat to harden? On an earlier page of this thread someone mentioned using a cooling rack and propping the pretzel. That intrigues me.

I might also make fudge this year. The Kraft magazine had recipes for different kinds of fudge.

About half of the pretzel is covered in chocolate. I usually make the molds for my kids' classes and the dipped, sprinkled, covered ones for adults. The molds come in all sorts of shapes (not just Christmas). I even saw a similar mold to use with candy canes!

Can anyone give me an idea how long these will stay fresh. Typically pretzels don't stay as fresh and would like to know the best way to store them ? Thanks

I store mine in tupperware. They have never been around long enough to get stale. I have two boys and a Hubby who love chocolate covered pretzels.

Chocolate covered pretzels are one of my favorite foods in the world. Thanks for bumpin' this back up!

Thanks for the great ideas! I am going to try the oreo truffles and the cookie dough truffles to go with my xmas baking! Maybe i will trial run them at Thanksgiving to see if people in my fam will eat em! :cool1:

I just made "light saber" chocolate covered pretzel rods for my ds's Star Wars bday party for today. I bought the Wilton candy melts in red, dark green and blue. I melted each color in a glass mixing bowl over a pan of simmering water. I then just used a small cheese spreader/frosting spreader to cover each rod and sprinkle with matching sugars. I layed them on a wax paper covered baking sheet and stuck it in the fridge to harden. Oh, because they were light sabers I wrapped one end in a small strip of foil for the handle. They are such a huge hit I'll make them for Christmas using milk chocolate drizzled with white, red and green chocolate.

Oh my gosh, this is a GREAT way to do it. I made these last year and they were so good and such a nice gift. I'm going to do them again this year. I also did the "dip in peanut butter" thing and they were delish!

You could try putting some of the melted colored chocolate in a ziploc baggie and snip the corner to drizzle. I haven't tried this but you could try putting the baggie in warm water or nuke iit in the microwave for a few seconds if it starts getting hard before you are done.

Here's another easy idea for Christmas. Take Ritz crackers and dip them in the chocolate. If you dip the crackers in mint choc chips they taste like Girl Scout Mint cookies. Also, take two ritz crackers, put peanut butter between them (peanut butter sandwich) and dip that in dark chocolate. To die for. :thumbsup2 They are always a hit with the staff and easy to do.

Schachteles, or anyone else.
How much cream cheese to how many crushed oreos for the truffles? that sounds delicious.

Its an 8 oz bar of cream cheese to a pack of Oreos. I recently made them for a bake sale and my friends and I called them fat balls... :rotfl:

I want to do the chocolate covered pretzle sticks, anyone know where you can get the in vancouver bc canada, I have only seen the little ones.

I want to give the to my newphews as christmas gifts, how long before I give them would you make them?
