Making Chocolate Covered Pretzel Rods

Would the bags of Ghiardelli chips at the grocery store work just as well or do you use the bark type of Ghiardelli?
Thanks

I haven't used the chips, but the bark type you can get at Sam's for about $6-7 works great and is delicious!

Ok, I have to get into this topic. Candy making is what I love to do and it is how we go to Disney every year! I always use the wiltons condy melts. Another great thing to do with the oreo and cream cheese mixture is put into a mold. You can do all kinds of shapes. For valentines day I use big heart, for easter I use eggs and for christmas I use little squares. I then decorate the squares to make them look like presents. They are really cute! They make a great gift.

LOVE the ideas of the molds...might have to try that next year!

Schachteles, or anyone else.
How much cream cheese to how many crushed oreos for the truffles? that sounds delicious.

Remember when you are using regular chocolate chips and some of the barks, you aren't going to get the shine in the chocolate like you will with actual chocolates made for making candies.

We don't have a Sam's Club near us, but we do belong to BJ's Wholesale so maybe I will try there and see if they have it. Thank you for the response.

I am at the office right now, but when I get home tonight I will get you the recipe. But I am almost 100% sure you take one package of Oreos to one package of cream cheese. They are absolutely delicious!!

I have always used one package of oreos and one thing of cream cheese.

Ok here is one that I found online that is the same thing...

Oreo Truffles

8 ounce package cream cheese, softened
1 package of crushed oreo cookies
2 cups of melted chocolate to dip balls in

Put the oreos in a blender or food processor, they should be as ground up as you can get, it will be between a flour and sugar texture if that makes sense. On the high speed of a mixer, beat the cream cheese in a bowl until light and fluffy. Add the crushed cookies and beat until well combined. Refrigerate the mixture for 2 hours, until chilled enough to roll. Roll into 1-inch balls.

Dip the balls into the warm mixture and thoroughly coat. Place on wax paper to cool and harden. Store in the refrigerator or freezer. Makes 2 1/2 dozen.

Note: I do these with regular Oreos and regular chocolate and then I do it with Mint Oreos and mint chocolate. To distinguish between the two I buy the holiday colored melts and put that over the top.

This sounds awesome! I will have to make some this weekend just to try out the recipe! :thumbsup2

I like to use almond bark also to dip the oreo mixture in.

Thank you for posting this! I'm a cooking idiot and this seems easy enough for me not to screw up. :)

You will NOT be disappointed. And if you want something "different" do some with the regular Oreos and some with the mint...they are yummy...I am starting to think I might make them tonight!

You will do GREAT...it is putzy I won't lie there...but you will be the hit of the party with these. And people really don't realize how easy they are to make...I usually play it off like it is so hard. The hardest part is not eating everything along the way and keeping my family's paws out of the way!! :rotfl2:

OK so i've never done this! I'd like to do this for my sons class

take me step by step:

I buy pretzel rods

Melt chocolate in the microwave

Dip the pretzel in the chocolate (do i dip the entire pretzel?)

If i lay on wax paper to cool, will it stick at all??

thanx

lisa

oh also how much chocolate would i buy? I have a michaels so i can buy the wafers you guys are talking about - how does that come? bag?

Say i want to make 25 pretzels how much chocolate would i need?

Okay, a stupid question, probably, but if I melt down choc. chips to dip pretzels in, the choc. will harden? (And someone put PB on the pretzel and THEN dipped - did that harden???)

Sorry - not much of a candy/cookie maker here, but these sound great!! :goodvibes

I hope the experts will answer you, but I tried this for the first time last year and had some stupid moments (like the pretzels were too tall for the chocolate!). I ended up buying short pretzel rods and using ghiardelli chocolate chips from the grocery store. They don't stick to the paper. I left enough for a little handle. :) Good luck!

Like some one said about the tall glass I use one of those tall coffee mugs so I have a handle to hold onto. kinda of tipp the mug & roll the pretzel.

Oh thank you. I am making a bunch of treats for my parents (and kids) for Christmas and chocolate pretzels sound wonderfull.

take me step by step

Here is my recipe:

Holiday Pretzels

1 bag Wilton candy melts (or you can use squares of baking chocolate)
1 package pretzel rods (can be found cheap at Kroger)
colored candy sprinkles (Target $ spot has some) or crushed peppermints/ candy canes

Place chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl or cup and heat until melted (do not overheat). Dip each pretzel rod about halfway down into chocolate, or spread chocolate over one end of pretzel using a knife. Coat chocolate end of pretzel with candy sprinkles. Place pretzels on waxed paper to dry.

I can get several dozen out of one bag of Wilton candy melts.

I mainly make chocolate covered pretzels. I use the bordens chocolate that comes in a tray. They have white and chocolate at my grocery store. they are so easy to make.. It hardens right up. The kids decorate them right after we dip them. dh is already asking for me to make them.
