Making Chocolate Covered Pretzel Rods

I too love making the pretzel rods and the candy. I have found personally that if I go to the local candy store to get my items, they are MORE than willing to share some tips... without a doubt as you want to buy more items.. hehehe
You get your info and buy what you need but then you learn a trick or two as to what to buy when.
I have also used the flavor wafers that I get from the candy store.

The Oreo Truffles sound 'delightful'
Thank you so much for sharing!!!!

I also wanted to add that when I make my pretzels, I just get a large glass bowl my pampered chef one actually and melt a little bit of chocolate at a time in the microwave, I do lower the power and cook only for 30 sec at a time, after 2 cycles I attempt to stir the chocolate and determine how many more times I will continue doing so.. it doesn't take a lot of time but you do have to watch it and keep hitting the 30 sec on the microwave.

I then use a spoon and dip and scoop choc. onto the pretzel rod. I do use the large ones... and for those that break... I just dip the broken end in and those stay for my family. ;) this way they won't eat the "GOOD" ones that are for others/company etc...

I haven't dipped any in PB as of yet but is going to happen this year that is FOR SURE.. YUM!

What a great topic!

My special addition to the pretzel rods is caramel....I buy the caramel apple wraps @ the grocery store that come 5 or 6 in a pkg. I cut each caramel flat circle into 4 strips. Then I wind it around the pretzel rod diagonally and squeeze the ends so they stick to the pretzel. When you then dip it in the chocolate, the heat from the melted chocolate also melts the caramel :goodvibes Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmy! :o) Then coat in any topping such as candies, coconut, nuts, etc.... :)

What a great post! My kids and I were planning on trying to make these pretzels sometime before Christmas. We were at the Goofy's Candy Shop in Downtown Disneyin September and brought home the chocolate covered pretzels covered in crushed M&M's (we had extra snack credits left). They were to die for and I still daydream about these every so often!!!

Just a quick question. DD9 made these in school last year for us as a present and they really tasted stale, gross. How many days do you think these will last for? Thanks!

Wow, thanks for all these tips! I'm sure you all have better Ideas than I would about how to package these individually (for not too much money), I hae to bring in 25 or so to my daughter's class next week. How 'bout it?:santa:

I just wrap them in saran wrap and tie them up with a bunch of curly ribbon. You can also use the treat bags and curly ribbon.

I was wondering the same thing - how do you guys package these?

I've been able to find plain cello treat bags with twist ties (tall ones for wrapping lollipop cookies) at places like Hobby Lobby, Michael's & WalMart with the rest of the Wilton baking supplies. I've also found seasonal treat bags at Dollar Tree.

A few years ago, we received a gift of chocolate pretzel rods packaged in a decorative "tin" intended for wine bottles. I thought this was a cool presentation, but I'd be worried about the pretzels going stale if the tin wasn't air tight (lots of humidity issues here).

I found some long rectangle tins that are the perfect size to fit about 8-12 rods (depending upon how fat your rods are). I also put them in long treat bags and tie with wired ribbon. I only put about 6 rods in the treat bags and those are give as little happys but the tins go to people along with a tin of homebaked cookies for those whom I wish to do a little more for.

These sound so good.. during lunch I went to the store and got stuff to make them :rotfl2:

Thought I'd share my fav truffle recipe too. Cookie Dough Truffles
It's online... but I will just post it here. I made these several years ago and my bro - in - law LOVES them. So do I :)

/2 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup miniature semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped walnuts (*I leave out the walnuts*)
1 1/2 lbs semi-sweet chocolate candy coating, chopped

1. In a mixing bowl, cream the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
2. Add the flour, milk and vanilla; mix well.
3. Stir in the chocolate chips and walnuts.
4. Shape into 1 inch balls; place on waxed paper-lined baking sheets.
5. Loosely cover and refrigerate for 1-2 or until firm.
6. In a microwave safe bowl, melt candy coating, stirring often until smooth.
7. Dip balls in coating; place on waxed paper-lined baking sheets.
8. Refrigerate until firm, about 15 minutes.
9. If desired, remelt remaining candy coating and drizzle over candies.
10. Store in the refrigerator.

WEnt out to Michael's and bought the Wiltons Chocolate on sale for 1.59 a bag. I got Dark Chocolate and a bag of white! I also got some colorful sprinkles.

I'm thinking of not using the rods but the twisted pretzels - i guess it does not matter which you use does it?

The rods are so much easier to coat when you can just dunk and swirl in a tall glass.

My Target $ spot had some cute gingerbread and candycane sprinkles I got for the rods. I usually pour the sprinkles onto a plate and roll the chocolate covered rod in it.

If you use mini M&M's be sure to sprinkle those on. They're too heavy to roll on.

Great idea, thanks! I don't know why I never thought of that...instead, I make a mess swirling around in my too-short bowl!

When I made these last year I found short pretzel rods, not quite as thick and about half the length. I think maybe they were generic brand in a bag. They fit nicely in treat bags ties with a ribbon. I thought it was a better gift for kids, and I was able to make a lot of them. The big pretzels are just a lot, you know?

The glass is a great idea..thanks, this is our project for the weekend. I am using Almond Bark white chocolate with some tinted red (must use candy coloring to tint chocolate...) to drizzle on some. Jimmies, nonpariels, and mini chocolate chips are wonderful. I also have some caramels left over from carmel apples I may use as a first layer.

I'm also going to give these pretzels to the gym teacher - she is always very friendly in the morning to the kids - so i want to acknowledge her and i think this will be a great way! Also making them for my son's Holiday Party...and
perhaps for my new years party!

Thanx

Okay. Can someone explain to me the reason to add oil/crisco to the chocolate? I have been making different kinds of chocolate candies(truffles this year) for a couple years now. And I have never heard of adding oil to my chocolate. Is this strictly to get a shine? If so, that doesn't seem necessary for pretzel rods. For molded chocolates, sure. Can someone help?

SUBSCRIBING... I can't wait to try the CCP, my husband loves them  and they seem easy (enough for me) to do! :rotfl:

I'm wondering the same thing. I don't need the chocolate to be shiny, you can't even see it on the pretzels.

I just made chocolate dipped pretzel rods last night.

I use a tall mug and Hershey's milk chocolate chips.

I boil some water in a large glass bowl, and put the mug in the bowl. It's kinda like a cheap version of a double boiler.

I don't dip the pretzels in sprinkles, I use crushed up Oreos, M&Ms, Reese's Peices, Reese's PB cups, Butterfingers, Heath bars, or whatever candy people request.

I love the idea of dipping in carmel first.

I'll have to try it this weekend. and then test it on the guys at work. :)

I ***think*** it may have something to do with the consistenecy of the chocolate. if you melt chocolate chips and use them without adding the oil it is not very smooth and is a bit thick. Somone correct me if I am wrong please.

You only add oil if you're melting chocolate chips and it is to make the consistency smoother and easier for dipping. You don't add oil if you use almond bark. I believe it already has the oil added.
