Making Chocolate Covered Pretzel Rods

Ihave always used canning waxin the chocolate works greatand I use a double boiler ,had horrid microwave success, so wont even try again!!I like the prettkel rods and the oreo cookies I have left over choc just begging to be used!! How do yo dip them on both sides or don't you??

a little off the pretzel questions but my cousin's MIL would make a peanut butter ball dipped in chocolate that were wonderful. Does anyone know what you would add to the peanut butter. It didn't seem like it was straight from the jar. Going to try and make up tins as small gifts for the first time this year and this site is giving me some great ideas.:santa:

That sounds like buckeyes. At least that's what we call them in Ohio. They're small round peanut butter balls dipped in chocolate, and they look like a buckeye. I forget what all goes into the peanut butter, but I think at least one of the ingredients is powdered sugar.

I LOVE buckeyes. I used to make them when I was little.. and a similar recipe making just bars (in a pan.. spread the PB mixture then top with chocolate)

The PB has powdered sugar and butter in it. If you do a google search for "buckeye recipe" you'll find the measurements.

These sound so good.. during lunch I went to the store and got stuff to make them :rotfl2:

Thought I'd share my fav truffle recipe too. Cookie Dough Truffles
It's online... but I will just post it here. I made these several years ago and my bro - in - law LOVES them. So do I :)

/2 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup miniature semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped walnuts (*I leave out the walnuts*)
1 1/2 lbs semi-sweet chocolate candy coating, chopped

1. In a mixing bowl, cream the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
2. Add the flour, milk and vanilla; mix well.
3. Stir in the chocolate chips and walnuts.
4. Shape into 1 inch balls; place on waxed paper-lined baking sheets.
5. Loosely cover and refrigerate for 1-2 or until firm.
6. In a microwave safe bowl, melt candy coating, stirring often until smooth.
7. Dip balls in coating; place on waxed paper-lined baking sheets.
8. Refrigerate until firm, about 15 minutes.
9. If desired, remelt remaining candy coating and drizzle over candies.
10. Store in the refrigerator.

Those sound good...might add them to the list of things to make this weekend! Last year I made coconut bonbons and I am not doing those this year, so your cookie dough one might take the place.

Let me know how they turn out! I really like them and they're pretty simple to make... and so different from what people are used to :)

please always use Snyder's of Hanover pretzels

Why is that?:confused3 They are not my pretzel of choice.

Just wanted to add...if you are microwaving chocolate, it doesn't take long, 30 - 90 seconds. Much longer than that, and you will end up with burned chocolate. I put mine in for 60 seconds. When you take it out, the chips will still be perfectly formed. But, when you stir, it will smooth out and become a nice, shiny melted chocolate. If your chips haven't fully melted, microwave for another 30 seconds and stir again.

I always use chocolate chips, rather than bark or dots. The smaller, more uniform size requires less heating to melt. Also, I never put oil/crisco in my chips. I have learned that drizzling some oil into the chocolate helps if it has seized up or has a lumpy consistency. Otherwise, it isn't necessary.

I make the choc pretzels and this year I saw these cute snowman hats in a catalog that I want to make. They are an oreo cookie with marshmallow on top dipped in choc and it looks like a snowmans hat. They are addorable and they were like 12.00 for 10.I have the wilton christmas sprinkles that are the holly leaves so I thought I could stick one of them on the brim for decoration.

I make 4 different versions of the chocolate covered pretzels. I do the milk chocolate caramel (I use the caramel dots you can get at the candy supply stores and just sprinkle the chocolate covered pretzel with them and then let dry). I also do a plain milk chocolate with red/green/white chocolate drizzle on it. And I make a white chocolate with Oreo dust on them (crushed oreo's, but no big chunks, completely pulverized oreo's LOL). And then I make red/green candy melt ones with sugar sprinkles on them in a Holiday color.

I also have a list of other candies I make, and this year I'm also doing the Oreo truffles (I actually made these for this past Thanksgiving...YUMMY). I dip mine in white chocolate though and then I put them in those little paper cups for candy (sort of like small reese's paper cups).

I LOVE making candy for Christmas. And it's great to give to neighbors, work friends....etc that you don't buy presents for but want to get them something.

The ones I make have 10x sugear , melted butter. nuts and rice crispies in and after chilling I dip them

How do you make the caramel/chocolate pretzels? Do you melt caramels and dip them? I see the post about using the apple wrappers -- is that the best way? I want to try these!

Here are some pics of a store with finished pretzels. (Not my own pretzels.)

:santa: Found this thread from last Christmas! Makes me hungry for chocolate covered pretzels.

We made some last year. One thing I found out is that if I dipped the pretzels in caramel, I had to wait until that kind of set before putting the chocolate on. I'm not sure how the peanut butter would work - I would think it would just melt off when the hot chocolate hit it. Anybody? princess:

The rods are so much easier to coat when you can just dunk and swirl in a tall glass.

My Target $ spot had some cute gingerbread and candycane sprinkles I got for the rods. I usually pour the sprinkles onto a plate and roll the chocolate covered rod in it.

If you use mini M&M's be sure to sprinkle those on. They're too heavy to roll on.

I use the tall coffee mugs same idea but with a handle.

My kids routinely take these for their birthday treats. I get either the baggies that don't zip or get the goodie bags that are longer and put two per bag and tie them with pretty ribbons. When I use the baggies, the bottoms stick out a bit, so I send them to school in a rubbermaid container still so that they stay fresh. The kids really love them!

Awesome idea! :thumbsup2 Thank you!

I bought some chocolate dipped Oreos the other day in Walmart and WOW are they delicious. but very expensive, $3.89 for 12 cookies.
So I went to the store and got regular oreos and the chocolate from AC Moore (It's on sale at AC Moore and Joanne's). The dipped ones were just like the ones in Walmart. Only I decorated mine with swirls of white and red chocolate melts.
Well last night I was at Trader Joes. they have the peppermint filled Oreo type cookie. I dunked those in the chocolate. Guess what everyone is getting from me this Christmas? I bought out all the cookies they had a Trader Joes today. One of my sons (all 3 work at TJ's) said last year those cookies sold on ebay for $20 a box. So buy them early if you have a hankarin for dunkin.
I am going to pick up some of those smooth and meltie mint flavored ones today and try and melt them. I think those would be even better on the peppermint oreos.
