Major Rumor Marvel in ToT update page 25

Now there's an interesting limitation. What is that "time period"?

I think that is time period the character lived in. So like they can't depict Captain America in the year 3035 living on an alien planet type thing.

You are correct that Marvel/Disney would have to approve new uses, but the contract specifies a very narrow criteria for this approval:

"Whenever Marvel has “reasonable” rights for rejection of approval hereunder, the basic criteria to be used by Marvel may include inconsistency with (i) basic story line, (ii) the powers, (iii) basic personality traits, (iv) physical appearance (including clothing or costume), and/or (v) living habitat or environment relating to such character as portrayed in Marvel’s exploitation of such character in comic books or other products for the particular time period being depicted by MCA."

So Marvel/Disney cannot refuse Universal's request just because they want to.

in my above post:

Disney can't really turn down a new marvel ride in good faith if there is nothing about it that is harmful to the character. So if Universal wants an iron Man ride, Disney would have to try *really* hard to find problems with it if they wanted to prevent it.

I really have a hard time believing any of this GoG overlay BS. TOT is the best modern attraction Disney has made. I'd argue it's there best ever. Not sure why you'd mess with such a great product that has been duplicated at nearly every Disney Park, world wide. Besides, they don't have the luxury of taking ToT our of the limited lineup of attraction at DHS right now or the foreseeable future. None of this makes any sense.

Does everything that Disney does make sense?

Nope! But, come on. There are so many other attractions at WDW that could use some love. How about a GoG makeover of Mission Space or use the theater at Imagination for a 4d attraction. There, I think I came up with 2 better ideas, at least in my little head.

I understand but guardians doesn't belong in Epcot and with ToT both Disneyland and WDW have one so they can do it to both which is the main selling point.

you are right, of course. That said, they were able to incorporate Nemo on two completely different ride systems and get a similar outcome. I think the public will go nuts, in a negative way, if they do this. Much more than we've seen in the past. This is almost like messing with Pirates or Haunted, ok maybe not as extreme, but its right up there, imo.

Funny you say Pirates or Haunted Mansion. In Disneyland they do an overlay with nightmare before Christmas and there isn't an outcry. Then when the Pirates movies came out they added Jack Sparrow to Pirates and there wasn't an outcry. This is a rumor of course so it's not a guarantee it will happen.

That would be highly problematic with Marvel Comics characters. Many of them have traveled through time. Pretty much all of them have spent time on alien planets.

I will give you that on Pirates at DL, but people LOVE NBC and in full disclosure, I wasn't around when they started the NBC overlay and I will admit I love it! That said, at least the NBC overlay makes some sense for the time of year that they do it. Pirates and Jack Sparrow was minor at best and didn't change the attraction too much. Did it? Just some new animatronics and the fog screen thingy in the beginning.

It goes back to fitting. Jack Sparrow fits in Pirates. Nightmare Before Christmas fits in the Haunted Mansion. This does not fit. I also think the idea that it was not temporary in Disneyland has really taken people back (and maybe they are figuring it wouldn't stay temporary in WDW either).

Yeah, we are getting well over my head on this. But, all time periods aren't depicted at Universal. So you can't have say Wolverine's time travel suit used in an area depicting present time (no idea if he traveled, just the first guy that came to mind). Basically they can't have guys in costumes that are not appropriate for the setting they are in (or at least that is how I am reading it).

That is true but according to the rumor Disney wants something Marvel in DCA quickly because they won't pony up the money for an actual new attraction. Temporary is of something Disney never does, just look at the hat at DHS.

I had to take a break from worrying about this for a while, but the updates are not encouraging. Personally I think overlays, even temporary ones, are overrated. Sometimes they make sense, but they're never better than the classic attraction they are overlaying. In DL it makes sense that maybe the super-frequent visitors want something different, but keep them out of the World.

I don't knot. As a frequent visitor to WDW I would love to see a temporary overlay there but then you'll Abe first time guests complaining they don't get to see the original. There really is no win win situation with an overlay. I got to experience the Jingle cruise overlay and that was a nice change.

Jingle cruise was nice, small, didn't really change the experience or story of the ride. It's fine. I'd like them to Jingle Cruise the new restaurant next door. That place was awful. I've been twice.. and everyone keeps saying they have good experiences there... why? Why not me?

I have only heard good experience about Skipper Canteen. I think the biggest problem people see with the restuarant is that the menu is a bit exotic. However I don't think they should change it.

Which is why I think you see a much bigger outcry. I think if they had a theme that worked to start with, gave it the overlay and it was to coincide with a yearly Marvel weekends, people would be excited about it. I think the fact that people don't see it as temporary, and that it doesn't seem to fit at all have combined to really push people over the top of it (especially people who are already REALLY mad with Disney due to all the cuts).

To give you an idea of how mess it is, Wolverine (as currently depicted in the comics) is an old-man from a parallel universe who has somehow ended up in the main universe where the younger Wolverine is dead. I'm not making this up.

The language in the contract strikes me as woolly and almost unenforceable given the incredibly wide parameters set and the nature of the source material. No doubt Universal plays it pretty safe and tame and sticks to the "iconic" looks. But I was just curious if they had gone so far as to actually define a time period for the land.
