Magic reburb - did it happen?

Hmm.. maybe I just didn't pay attention - or I just had such a great time it didn't matter- but neither the carpets in the lobby nor the bedspread bothered us at all! We just got off Magic June 10 -every nite our Host folded it up and put it away - it just wasnt needed- and it came back out each morning- but I didnt feel it was dated and the carpets in the lobby- I am only concerned with the looks on my kids faces as they hugged Mickey or Goofy - not how well they matched the carpet - if I want a pleasing background photo I will pay to go to a professional photography studio. JMHO :confused3
I will say though that friends of ours invited us on a RC cruise on the Explorer of the Seas- and looking at those rooms- they looked really outdated- so maybe I've just got my Mickey-colored glasses on!!

Anne we were on the same sailing as you and you don't have Mickey colored glasses lol. Just look at the other ships when you are docked at port. We compared the other ships when we stopped in Nassau and were grateful for all the times we saw the engineers painting, fixing, and powerwashing the side of the ship. The other ships we saw were not well maintained and were outdated compared to the magic.

We just got off the Magic and had rooms 6100 and 6102. We had new mounted hairdryers in the bathrooms. They did work better, the handle still got really hot and I used a washcloth on the handle. The couches and bedspreads were very worn.

I actually miss the old bedspreads. The Wonder got new bedding in March or April 2011. This is what it looks on the Wonder:

We had an inside cabin on our Hawaii cruise, but still had a duvet.

I would love for this to be on the Magic!!!

this is what they have on the dream and fantasy (though I believe the dream has blue quilts?) I LOOOVED it on the Fantasy.
Much better than the bed spreads. If they switch out the magic, this is what it's going to be. This is what the new ships have.

Quilt color is decided based on your stateroom category. I believe it goes Gold > Blue > Red.

I absolutely loved my daughter's face when she was with the characters and the princesses and was joking about clashing with the carpet. (It was my daughter's excitement throughout the cruise that made the trip for me.) I actually did not notice how awful the carpet is until I saw it from above on Deck 4 and when I saw it in the photo prints. The carpet - and the whole lobby- IMO is underwhelming.

There are definitely things that need to be fixed/upgraded on the Magic. Most people who defend her have some sentimental attachment to her. I have none and would not sail on her (or the Wonder) again (certainly not for the $650 plus tips per night we paid). I am, however, really looking forward to our booked cruise on the Fantasy.

And by the way, we really did have a FANTASTIC cruise.

There was some refurbishing on Deck Four - the open walkway around the ship. They are digging out the black caulking between the teak panels. This is a huge construction job, and it makes Deck Four unusable. :confused3 We were so bummed about this. Really brought down our walking and DH's morning run on the open deck. Not happy. Suppose to go on for another week. :headache:

We just removed the nasty bedspread every day and stuffed it in the cabinet above the tv. :rolleyes1

The 5 Night Canadian was a Great Cruise! Just a few inconveniences along the way that could have been handled better.

I'm not sure if you mean you dislike the colors and design of the carpet or it was in a state of disrepair?

Yes, colors and design. It seemed a little...tacky. :) Maybe I had higher expectations based on some of the nice Disney properties I've stayed at. I did start to get very worried prior to sailing reading about the rust, cracked tiles, etc. which we did not encounter. I can't quite put my finger on what it was that I really didn't like about the ship. It seemed very smallish - not in comparison to the 150,000 ton ships but on its own - the buffet area, the lobby area, etc. Still glad I went because any cruise is better than no cruise. :thumbsup2

that lobby carpet is ugly... i was on the magic a year ago and the ship had some issues that needed addressing even then!!

Typically, the DCL ships would go into drydock every other year. The Magic in the even years, and the Wonder in the odd. By maritime law, ships must go in 2x in a 5 year period not to exceed 3 years. Typically, this is when most ships get upgrades and refurbs. This is due to the ship being out of service while mandatory inspections are done, to satisfy IMO,SOLAS and other rules.Once in a while, if something is deemed needing repair for what ever reason, they will do it at sea. There have been times where a whole section of cabins have been blocked off during a cruise for repair, or divers have followed the ship to ports or traveled with her, to do repairs on her in port.
For what ever the reason, the Magic is not going into drydock this year. No one knows for sure when she is going in or where. Its all speculation and rumor at this point. Theres only a handfull of people in DCL that knows, and I doubt they are on the ships.

The last time the Magic went into dd, she went to Freeport, and came home with a lot of the problems that you see today. From what I gathered( I was on the 1st cruise post dd in 2010) the contractors did a lot more damage then they fixed. From buring holes in the carpets to destroying things as they went about there jobs. Things like taking corners off of the molding from carelessness, etc. Also, when the ship into port 2 days before her sail date, she had wiped large sections of bottom paint off, her white boot line was already smeared and running to the red and her bulbous bow that was supposed to be red was already largely grey from the underpaint. The blue black hull paint didnt match either. You could see large sections that were fresh painted, and others that looked old. Even the cabins that had new carpet, had issues where you could see where the carpet wasnt cut right, didnt fit, or they cut it short and tried to lay in a small piece of carpet.

I think they learned a lot with the build and design of the Magic as their first attempt and it was too late to change the Wonder, but the space of the Dream class is very impressive in comparison. But yet they still managed to screw up some of the good qualities of the Classics on the new ships! :rotfl2:
Personally I don't care for the Chihuly chandeliers at all.

I agree. This was a disappointment for me too.

The bedspreads are awful on the Magic! I hated how the SR host would wrap the pillows around it. We would basically take the whole bedspread off the bed. We hate waking up having the bedspread up near our face, who knows the last time those things were cleaned! YUCK!

We just got off the Dream today and I like the linens there better. We still put the red cover away when we sleep but it's a much nicer look.

They get cleaned at the end of each cruise. The bed is basically stripped and clean linens put in their place while the dirty is sent downstairs to be.cleaned.

The 5 Night Canadian was a Great Cruise! Just a few inconveniences along the way that could have been handled better.

I agree the cruise was lovely overall, but I  the Promenade Deck. I choose a room on Deck 5 for easy access to fresh air & walking. I'm prone to sea sickness & fresh air really helps. I also love to walk on that deck for exercise. They tried to claim one side or the other usable, but normally only part of one side & the back was usuable for walking. Since it was a little chilly on sea days, Deck 4 is a better option. I also  the comfy deck chairs. It's a great place to read. I feel bad for CMs that use the deck late at night or very early in the am. CMs & passengers alike enjoy a daily run to keep in shape, rather than the Vista.

We were on the Wonder last summer & the Magic is showing it's wear on the inside in some places---yes the bedspreads need replaced. The outside looks gorgeous!

I carried my favorite Disney quilt onto the ship with me last month. I was soooo not looking at that awful bedspread. We ended up upgrading at the port anyway so at night we had a duvet/comforter anyway but my quilt was right there over our feet, too. I have a serious "thing" when it comes to bedspreads. I loathe those things!

Me too! I book hotels based on the bedspread pictures on line! You can tell so much on how old the room is based on the bedspread style!

We just returned from the Inaugural Canadian Cruise and had a Magical time. I must agree that the Magic is overdue for dry dock. Our bed was not very comfortable and DD was very uncomfortable on the sofa bed. The old hairdryers need to be replaced. I wouldn't mind seeing the bedspreads replaced as well.

This was our third DCL cruise and the second time we were on the Magic. We noticed the wear all around the ship, but that didn't make our cruise any less fabulous. We were disappointed that deck 4 was undergoing refurbishment on this trip. We were looking forward to relaxing on those chairs and taking our daily deck 4 walks more than anything. I would still sail the Magic again, but would like to try out the new ships first.
