Magic Bands 101

Here's sort of a silly question I hadn't thought about before.... When dining, and charging your meal to your room, does the server have something that scans your Magic Band? Do you have to give them your band to take over to a scanner? How does that work? Just curious :)

They bring over a scanner and scan your band. Then you put in your 4 digit code.

Thanks! Just something I was pondering. Now that I've booked ADRs and FP+ I don't have anything to do but think and wonder ;)

We're staying at shades of green and using the 4 day park hoppers. Is there any way whatsoever to grab magic bands before we get down to florida? :) We're using them because I have a nasty habit of almost losing my plastic cards. If it's latched on to my wrist it should be a bit better.

I think it is only available in the parks at this point, and DTD. When you purchase it, you are required to link it to ticket media (what I have heard), so you can do that first thing and then slide your card in your wallet and forget about it! I know I still carried my ticket with me, although we had no issues with it our entire stay.

There was an article that they will start selling the bands at the airport, but it doesn't say when.

I'm wondering about the how does it know which ticket to use too. We have a one day hopper and a one day one part ticket on our account. How will it 'use' the tickets?

I have a few questions regarding the Magic Bands.

We've stayed at Beach Club last Oct/Nov during the test stage and upgraded DS and my tickets to APs knowing that we could use those bands later on our return trips.
We have AKL booked 8/15-8/21 room only reservation.
Yacht Club booked 8/21-8/28 pk (free dining offer) with 4 day Park Hopper.

1. How does Disney know which ticket to use on DS and my Magic Bands? We would obviously want to use our APs, not our 4 day PH.
2. Also, our FD starts 8/21 but decided to go early, 8/15. Could DH use his ticket early with Magic Bands?

I have a reservation that shows up on MDE. I have linked an older card ticket to it. My friend on the same reservation, and listed as my friend on MDE, was able to customize a magic band, but I don't see the link to do it. Anybody know why, or if I'm missing something? Would it be because I have a card ticket on there? I will be buying more tickets, not even sure if I will use the one I have. Just seems weird that she can do it but I can't.

I assume you have an on site reservation? Then you should get a magic band whether you have a ticket or not...

We are staying offsite for 3 nights and then heading to Animal Kingdom for 4 nights. How will the Magic Bands work? Will we only be able to pre-book for when we are onsite? or will we have to buy magic bands for the earlier part of our trip?

What kind of tickets will you have for this trip?

If it's tickets separate from your hotels (offsite and AK Lodge), you can link those to My Disney Experience and book FP+ reservations up to 30 days in advance. You don't need Magic Bands at all to do this.

Husband and I are AP holders because we go 4x/ year. I understand he and I will be able to book fast passes with our existing Magic bands-no problem, but worried about the kids not having Magic Bands until we start the on-site portion of vacation.
Kids will have Magic Your Way tickets.

I am trying to think of a way of avoiding the purchase of Magic Bands for 3 days off site, when the kids will have them for free when we arrive onsite at AKL after three nights off site.

Due to a "glitch" :rotfl2: we received 2 different sets of Magic bands for our upcoming trip. I know that we can use either of the bands, but can you use them on the same day, same park? Reason I'm asking, I don't plan to ride all the rides, but I've made FP+ for 2 people (DD18 and myself) so I was "assuming" I could just hand off my 2nd MB to her to go through the FP line again and use my FP+ for those rides I will not ride. Yes, I know I can make another FP+ for another ride that I DO want to ride, but I'd just rather let her ride some of her favorites twice while I stay back and take care of my 5 month old son. There's only a few rides I plan to get her to rider swap with me so I can ride (Soaring, Splash and Dinosaur.. possibly Kali if I feel like it). There's several that he can ride with us of course, but this trip I'm not going to be overly disappointed if I miss a ride... even one of my favorites. This is her graduation trip and I'm just as happy letting her ride what she wants. So I'm hoping that I can just give her my 2nd MB to do this. I'm guessing if I have to leave and head back to the room with him however, it wouldn't work.

Has anyone had any allergic reactions or skin irritations while wearing these bands? My mom has a bad reaction to pretty much any kind of metal (except for gold) that comes into contact with her skin, and while I think she'll be fine because it does't look like there's any exposed metal on the bands, I was mostly just curious about this because they look similar to a FitBit fitness band (which they had issues with in the past).

I'm also wondering if anyone has had issues with the band falling off? It doesn't exactly look like the most secure clasp, but at the same time, I don't think that Disney would continue to use something if they had many reports of the bands falling off, so I figure it must be ok...

Just a few questions from magic band newbie :)

No exposed metal, and they are latex free as well if that's a concern. I'm allergic to latex and had no issues. They also snap on quite tightly; no complaints!

Yes, you can do that. And actually, even if you head back with him, she should be able to keep your other band and use your FP+ experiences.

Good Deal! I was thinking it would be able to tell I wasn't actually in the park even if one of the bands was still in the park with her. That's good news then b/c we all know with an infant anything can happen, and I may have to head back to the room for a break. :rolleyes1

Nope, it can't tell. In fact, when it first started, you could even use a band that hadn't been used for park entry. I do think they have closed that loophole though.

Won't they send you the Magic Bands about a month before? If so, won't they be linked in MDE at that point?
