Mad As Rabbits: A Disneyland pre-trip report.

thought I'd throw in my 2 cents! We drive from Vallejo and here's how we do it. For me, making the drive early in the morning when I am fresh from sleep (even 6 hours) is WAY easier than doing it at night when I have just come off a full day of activity and packing!

SO... We pack the day before (Friday usually) and get the car packed, then I set the alarm for 4am. I get ready, get the kids up and hit the road by 500am. The kids get dressed but take their pillows/blankets in the car so they can finish their night of sleep. After a good infusion of caffeine, I am ready to go! With no traffic to deal with (except on the LA side), we usually do the drive in under seven hours, including stops. Now that has us going down 680 to 580 to I-5, which we discovered was almost a full hour shorter than taking the "shortcut" from Suisun through Rio Vista to Stockton! And if you figure you are 10 minute from me, that's probably the quickest way for you too!

We get to Anaheim early or mid afternoon, with enough time to hit the park if we choose, or to just 'chill' in downtown Disney or the pool.

Just thought I'd share! Happy planning!!

We are right here at highway 12 so it is no big deal for us. But I am not a fan of highway 12. The main reason that we always leave after my hubby gets off work is I would never sleep the night before. I lay in bed and go over lists in my mind. Last time we tried leaving at like 2 AM but it just didn't work for me. I need to really examine it this time. With any luck our soon to be 16 year old will get her licence before then anfd be able to drive part of the way down on I-5 anyway.

We're doing the 2 AM drive, haha. Well, I am. Sucks sometimes, only one of us being able to drive. Actually the reason I want to do the 2 AM drive is because I just know that I'm not going to be sleeping, so driving would be much more productive. By the way, you'll be driving right by us if you go down to 680 to 580 to I-5. We live right off the Carquinez Bridge. Well, sort of!

As much as I would prefer to take 680 to 580 it just isn't practical.:sad2:

Welcome! I am Kody and I am 14. This is my first pre-trip report, so if you have any advice on how to improve this, it would be greatly valued.

We are going to Disneyland November 30 - December 4th. I am really excited. :cool1:

My mother, kaoden39, will be contributing to this thread, and my sister, Mrs. Chamberlain, might help too. So, I hope you enjoy this thread. :D

Hey Kody! Hiya Michele! That sounds like a great time to go ...we contemplated doing that timeframe and catch the Christmas vibe instead of the Halloween vibe. I know y'all will have lots of fun!

Great pics of the fam, love the hamming it up shot with Mickey. Reminds me of my younger DD

I am trying to decide if we are getting four or five day park hoppers. We normally only do four days in the park and just leave in the morning to go hime but I am thinking about staying the day in the park before driving home. Different and fun.

*puts on enabler hat* Go 5 days!!!! You know you want to :thumbsup2

Now it is the time to decide where to stay. I know that it is months until we go but I want to lock in our room or rooms depending on where we stay. This is where Disboards comes in real handy. I think I have narrowed it down to either the Park Place Inn or the Carousel Inn. I would appreciate the opinion of anybody that has stayed at either one. I want to stay off property but I still want to be as close. Now I know a lot of people love Hojo's and I am considering them but the other two are my main choices. So I am kind of at a stand still. As wonderful as my husband is he just gives me the what ever you decide will be alright BS. So help!:rotfl:

We stayed at the Best Western Park Place Inn in January of 2005. It was a bit "damp" for lack of a better term, with very basic accomodations. But was clean and well-maintained and the staff was nice.

We were actually very heavily considering the Carosel for this year's trip and had made preliminary reservations before getting a good package for the DLH via AAA. I had heard they had recently remodeled the place and they had the rooftop pool, which I thought was cool. What did you hear bad about them?

For the last few trips we have stopped on the way down to sleep. We stop and then I lay in bed and I cannot sleep. I usually fall asleep an hour before it is time to go so I am even more tired than I was to begin with. So, I think I am going to make our reservations for November 29 and let them know we are gonna be really late and drive all the way through. Does anybody have any thoughts on this?

That is an big travel issue, taking the time to stop and then you can't wind down and rest. Same thing with the night before the trip. To a certain extent at the driver/parent you just have to embrace being sleep-deprived - lol. The real trick is to make sure that whatever plan you make, that you give the ability for the kids to sleep if they want to, even if it is in the car on the way down. We just make sure they have a good comfy blanket and pillow.

Our trek takes about 12hrs, so most of the time stopping at a hotel on the way works well for us. I did drive us home from DLR last time ...11 1/2hrs straight through due to light traffic and being flexible with the speed limits ;)

Okay now that the family stress is over with I can get down to really planning this shindig! I really think that we could afford the DLH or PP if I really budgeted it. But you know I can save so much money by staying off-site. And also if we take my Mom the price goes way up at the resort. We go from five to six people. That is a huge difference in price at the resort. Now am I gonna be a nice daughter or......:scared1:

I would say that if you are going to do the extra day and actually build in time at the resort, DLH/PP would be worth it. An afternoon by the pool, some time just exploring the resort, more of a focus on DTD. But if you're just heading down to hit the parks, just stay at the good neighbor hotels.

We dealt with the same thing with my MiL and the price difference between a regular room or a family suite. She decided not to go, so we ducked the problem. But for you, I'd say if she goes, get a family suite at a good neighbor and save the $$$

A pro con list sounds like a great idea. I think I will do that while I wait in line with my 14 year old daughter for the Jonas Brothers movie today. Yipee fun times ahead for me!:rotfl: :rotfl:

Uh oh - Jonas Bros fans *runs for cover* ;) I was fine with them until their performance with Stevie Wonder at the grammys. They were playing with a music legend (and former child/teen musical star in his own right), singing one of his most famous/well know songs, and they didn't bother to learn the lyrics and flubbed it in a big way

I really hope that if they're put in the position of working outside their very scripted box again, that they try a bit harder. Not trying to slam them and I think they're good kids, just hope to see a higher standard from them as they evolve as musicians.

*steps off soap box and promises to not get it back out again*

The PTR is looking great, can't wait to see more! Have y'all been down there during the holidays in the past? If so, I'm sure we'd all love to see some pics from it! :goodvibes

Sorry I have let real life interfere with fun and relaxation.:confused3

Thanks I'll keep them. Kody is a natural born ham. She has never met a mirror or camera she didn't like.

I am going to get the 5 day park hoppers. Even if we only spend a half day longer there it is still a half more at my happy place.:goodvibes

You know I really want to stay onsite but the difference in price is so huge I get guilt pangs spending it on the hotel. And I also have been looking a the deals they are offering at the resort hotel for earlier in the year and I am thinking of double booking and then dropping the one I don't want when the time comes. I mean 5 days for the price of 2 at the reosrt is amazing. That is almost enough to make me change dates. Hmm I must consider this option. Scotty is getting awful tired from major overtime.

I am still on the fence with my Mom, I know her feelings will be hurt if we don't include her but I also know she didn't enjoy the last trip and only spent a little time in the parks. Who knows. More on this later.

Argh the Jonas Brothers. I have seen so many pictures of those boys my eyes burn.:rotfl:Sorry Kody. Great musicians no.

Unforunately I don't have pictures from our 2005 trip. I bought throw away cameras and some where along the line they all got lost. Sherry E has a great trip report full of pictures from her Christmas trip this year. Be sure and take a look at them. And I am going to try to be better and add more later.:goodvibes

I have a dilema. With this new deal that Disney is running I am considering changing our trip dates to August. We can stay at the GCH for 5 nights for $300 less than 4 nights in December. And I had been obviously not even considering staying at one of the resort hotels.

So here's my question for you......do you want to go during the summer & stay at the GCH for that experience OR did you originally set up for December to experience the holidays at Disneyland???
I think the deal is awesome!!!! But.......if I wanted to be at Disneyland during the Christmas time....I'd have a hard time changing it just to take advantage of the promo......
Just food for thought!! :confused3

We've gone in December. The big thing for me is to go. Also I have always wanted to stay at GCH and there is this opportunity now and I kind of want to grasp it and run with it.

We are changing our trip dates! Instead of going in December we are going in August. This excites me so much becuase of the date changes we are getting to stay one more night and most likely stay onsite! Also because we always go off season we never usually get to see Fantasmic or the fire works this time we will get to see both. I am even more excited than I was before! And it is so much sooner! Yay!:dance3::dance3::dance3:
