Love those 80's!

I just read this thread. Man, the memories have come flooding back. I really miss the 80's, at least I miss the music. That's why I only listen to the Big 80's channel on Sirius. In fact I'm streaming it now online while I type this (The Bangles - Manic Monday). Ain't technology great?

Fortunately for me I don't think any pictures still exist from that period. However, to give you some idea take this pic, add a lot more hair (brown) and remove about 100#s.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention the opening act of this free show was Charles Rocket (any body remember him- I didn't think so).

I remember the late Charles Rocket. He did a lot of TV but I remember him from SNL and Moonlighting (the brother of Bruce Willis' character), don't know why but that's what I remember when I hear his name. He had one of those faces that just looks familiar. You just know you've seen him on TV.

Hahaha...I could keep going!

I wish you would. This is something I'm pretty good at. Well, that and useless trivia (I love the Uncle John's Bathroom Reader books). DW and DS call me Cliff Clavin though DW had to explain to DS who Cliff Clavin was.

Hey......I'd LOVE to see more movie/TV trivia...anyone?....ANYONE????

This pretty lady sang a 1989 super hit about an Elvis Presley painting...very sexy and sultry...ya might even say her velvet voice could bring ya back to a sweatier, steamier time when things were a little simpler....a guy would walk "alotta miles" to find a babe as sinful as she sounded in this particular song (actually, its the ONLY song I know by her).
Anyone recognize this face? Can ya go a step further and name the song Im referring to?

And the painting she may have been singing about...

Untitled-2.jpg

Black velvet, I remember 2 versions of the same song being out about the same time. Can't remember any names tho.

Well....DANG.....you get BONUS POINTS for knowing that it was on the charts TWICE within 18 months, by...as you stated....TWO different singers!!!!

The one thats NOT pictured above was performed by country singer Robin Lee ( I had to look her name up ) and was release in 1990!!! Great memory Denise!!!!

Ok....anyone else wanna take a stab at the name of the "pop chart" singer pictured above?

And, also....Im losing steam on this....please, if ya got some good trivia questions, quizzes or just basic fun facts...please post 'em!!!!

heres the lyrics, for those not familiar with the song and are wondering how its connected to Elvis:
Mississippi in the middle of a dry spell
Jimmy Rogers on the Victrola up high
Mama's dancin' with baby on her shoulder
The sun is settin' like molasses in the sky
The boy could sing, knew how to move, everything
Always wanting more, he'd leave you longing for

Black velvet and that little boy's smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees
Black velvet if you please

Up in Memphis the music's like a heatwave
White lightening, bound to drive you wild
Mama's baby's in the heart of every school girl
"Love me tender" leaves 'em cryin' in the aisle
The way he moved, it was a sin, so sweet and true
Always wanting more, he'd leave you longing for

Black velvet and that little boy's smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees
Black velvet if you please

Every word of every song that he sang was for you
In a flash he was gone, it happened so soon, what could you do?

(Guitar Solo)

Black velvet and that little boy's smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees
Black velvet if you please

Black velvet and that little boy's smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees
Black velvet if you please

If you please, if you please, if you please

Here's some lyric analysis:
"Jimmy Rogers on the Victrola up high" - Jimmy Rogers, an early Blues singer, influencing Elvis (the baby) at an early age. The Victrola is the record player, played loudly.
"Mama's dancin' with baby on her shoulder" - Gladys Presley dancing with the infant Elvis.
"Black velvet and that little boy's smile" - You can buy a black velvet Elvis painting at any respectable yard sale. Early female fans were drawn to his "Little boy smile."
"Black velvet with that slow southern style" - Elvis delivered some of his songs with slow, undulating hips. Check out "Steamroller Blues" live.
"Up in Memphis the music's like a heatwave" - Sun Studios. The epicenter of early Rock music and where Elvis recorded.
"White lightning, bound to drive you wild" - Rock music and booze.
"Mama's baby's in the heart of every school girl" - A reference to the baby in the early part of the song, being loved by all the young girls.
"Love Me Tender leaves 'em cryin' in the aisle" - Love Me Tender was a huge hit for Elvis in 1956.
"The way he moved, it was a sin, so sweet and true" - Elvis' legendary hips swivel, the Pelvis.
"Every word of every song that he sang was for you. In a flash he was gone, it happened so soon, what could you do?" - Elvis died suddenly in 1977. (thanks, Ken - Lasalle, Canada)

I googled it, but that's not fair.

I remember a song my then boss was crazy over, a few lyrics were

I'm special, so special, I've got to have some of your attention, give it to me.

Dang, I can hear that song in my head, but can't far enough to remember the title.

OK, this may be cheating, but I did a search on 80's trivia, and found a lot of things that I had completely forgotten about.

Let's go to TV for a change:

On Night Court, Judge Stone had a statue of what animal in his office? :confused3

Bonus: Harry was made a judge based on what determining criteria? (That one I remembered w/o the search. I loved that show!) :happytv:

That song is "BRASS IN POCKET" by the Pretenders...one of my faves too!!!

Alana Myles (Miles?) You guys do give the best clues!

You caught that clue, didnt you!!! "alotta miles" sounded as close to Alannah Myles as I could get!!!

I dont know if it was actually a statue...but I remember him having an Armadillo on his desk. I DONT know what the "determining criteria" was for him becoming a Judge, but cant wait to see the answer.
I DO remember he was a big "Mel(Scat Man) Tormet" fan.

Do you remember what sitcom Harry(the con-artist) was on BEFORE Night Court?

That's a bit tougher. Wasn't he on Steve Martin's Twilight Theater? Not sure if that is a sit-com or not. I know he was a magician before he started on Night Court.

I'll wait on the reason for making him a judge, see if anybody else comes up with it.

There were 3 female baliffs on Night Court. Can anyone name their characters? Even better, can you name the actresses?

Frank says Cheers

I remember Dave's World after Night Court for H Anderson. I googled Harry Anderson he lives in NO, La. now.

Wow...I never even knew Steve Martin HAD a show called Twilight Theater!!!

Harry made several appearances on another great 80s sitcom called CHEERS (NORM!!!!!!!)..he would come in and scam a free drink, from Sam, or Woody or whoever happened to be working the scene with him. He do his MAGIC ACT that he was originally famous for to con his way into free cocktails...he was a really creative magician, I miss him being on TV.

The 3 female bailiffs....I see everyone of their faces, but cant for the life of me remember any of their names... the little old mean lady who smoked constantly....was replaced by a goofy looking little old lady....who was QUICKLY replaced by the large sarcastic black lady. Bull was never replaced as a bailiff because he was irreplaceable on that show!!!

Dan, the prosecuter was from New Orleans...his brother does alot of local comercials still.

I can't believe you guys haven't mentioned Markie's Posts yet. :lmao:

LOL...I was thinking of her..but couldnt remember HER name either!!! She was really sexy.

I only remember Roz, who was played by Selma Diamond. Then I remember the African American woman, but don't remember either her name or her character's name. Don't actually remember a third female bailiff though.

I really think Roz from Monster's Inc. was based on Selma Diamond -- same name, same voice, same attitude.

They went through 3 actresses for baliffs. The first one died after the first season, the second also died, I think she only did one season as well.

There was also a different female defense attorney before Markie Post, but I can't think of either the actress's or character's name.

I NEVER connected these two together before...but you have hit that nail on the head!!! They MUST have besed Monsters inc 's Roz from Night Court's Roz...they are a perfect match!!! Even LOOK similar....in an alien...monstery kinda way:thumbsup2
