By "cut out sodas" do you mean diet too!
I often read that people stop drinking soda when trying to lose weight but I am not sure if they mean regular soda or diet too????

What's wrong with diet soda???
I have tried to cut that back too, but I still have a diet soda a day.
Any advice????

I have an occasional diet soda when I get tired of water. I don't see anything wrong with that. My friend is a lifetime member of WW and she said she has one soda a day. I don't have them everyday (because I have never been one to drink a soda everyday....just don't really want one) but it seems to be okay for her. She has kept her weight off over a year.

Hey everyone ... sorry I disappeared been busy dance recital in less than 5 days OMG :scared1: but I'm almost ready gotta finish music, slideshows, and make sure I have Aspen and my costumes ready....

Whoohoo went to a trainer last few weeks really good friend of mine (helps he's hot ... to bad he's in to my hubby more than me ;)) but so easy to be near even sweaty and gross .... he says my BMI is getting way better .... apparently I should relax with the scale because my legs are so muscular and so is my back ... that made me confident that the belly fat can be lost ...

I am sure next weeks trip and the dining plan my do a little damage to the weight loss...lol....

Hi everyone, I just found this thread today & it's just what I need to get started losing weight for our Sept trip. I've been on a low carb diet since Feb with occasional slip-ups & have only managed to lose 9 lbs. I weighed myself today & I'm still stuck at 179.5. I would like to lose at least 35 lbs by Sept 17, wish me luck. I have lost this much in the past in the same amout of time, I just have to get busy walking & exercising every day.

We aren't following a "plan" just trying to up our activity and eat healthier. Seems like whenever I have a "Plan" I blow it quickly. I don't really have a number goal in mind- but I want to feel GREAT!!!

I am really glad to read this thread and encourage everyone trying to get in shape but I think the key to success is to actually make a plan. I am not talking about some crazy, extreme diet and exercise regimen. Make it realistic so that you're not doomed to fail but make sure it pushes you out of your comfort zone. Decide what your ideal weight is and set a FIRM end date. Two pounds a week is very attainable with only moderate exercise and calorie reductions (2,000/day). Those are the terms I set for myself and once I started exercising I found that I was actually losing three pounds a week on average.

I am just over half way on my quest to get back to my ideal weight after 9 years of letting my guard down. I have lost 23 lbs since mid March and hope to shed another 10-15 lbs by the summer. I owe my success to planning my meals in advance and daily cardio exercise (4-5 days a week). I have not changed my diet drastically but I am diligent about my daily calorie count and how many calories I can afford to "budget" for each meal. I still eat pizza, chips, sweets and drink alcohol. Just all in moderation with consideration for what that means the next meal will contain. Exercise is really the key. I hit the elliptical or treadmill for 45 minutes to an hour but by no means do I have a trainer in my face yelling to go faster. I just select a preprogrammed routine and do it.

We leave for Disney on Saturday morning and have the DxDP so I am sure I will indulge and go well over my calorie budget but it's vacation right?! I plan to work out on my normal schedule but will not freak out if I come home a few pounds heavier.

Good luck to everyone! If you want it you can do it!

9 Great Reasons to Drink Water (Thanks to dumblittleman.com)
Here are 9 powerful reasons to drink water (with tips on how to form the water habit afterwards):

  1. Weight loss. Water is one of the best tools for weight loss, first of all because it often replaces high-calorie drinks like soda and juice and alcohol with a drink that doesn't have any calories. But it's also a great appetite suppressant, and often when we think we're hungry, we're actually just thirsty. Water has no fat, no calories, no carbs, no sugar. Drink plenty to help your weight-loss regimen.
  2. Heart healthy. Drinking a good amount of water could lower your risks of a heart attack. A six-year study published in the May 1, 2002 American Journal of Epidemiology found that those who drink more than 5 glasses of water a day were 41% less likely to die from a heart attack during the study period than those who drank less than two glasses.
  3. Energy. Being dehydrated can sap your energy and make you feel tired -- even mild dehydration of as little as 1 or 2 percent of your body weight. If you're thirsty, you're already dehydrated -- and this can lead to fatigue, muscle weakness, dizziness and other symptoms.
  4. Headache cure. Another symptom of dehydration is headaches. In fact, often when we have headaches it's simply a matter of not drinking enough water. There are lots of other causes of headaches of course, but dehydration is a common one.
  5. Healthy skin. Drinking water can clear up your skin and people often report a healthy glow after drinking water. It won't happen overnight, of course, but just a week of drinking a healthy amount of water can have good effects on your skin.
  6. Digestive problems. Our digestive systems need a good amount of water to digest food properly. Often water can help cure stomach acid problems, and water along with fiber can cure constipation (often a result of dehydration).
  7. Cleansing. Water is used by the body to help flush out toxins and waste products from the body.
  8. Cancer risk. Related to the digestive system item above, drinking a healthy amount of water has also been found to reduce the risk of colon cancer by 45%. Drinking lots of water can also reduce the risk of bladder cancer by 50% and potentially reduce the risk of breast cancer.
  9. Better exercise. Being dehydrated can severely hamper your athletic activities, slowing you down and making it harder to lift weights. Exercise requires additional water, so be sure to hydrate before, during and after exercise.

How to form the water habit

So you're convinced that water is healthier, but you'd like to know more about how to make drinking water a daily habit.

Here are some tips that have helped me:

  • How much water? This is a debatable question. What's clear is that the old recommendation of "eight 8-ounce glasses a day" isn't right, for several reasons: that amount includes all dietary water intake, including food and non-water beverages; it also ignores a person's body weight, which is an important factor in figuring the amount; it also varies if you are sick or exercise. It's also not good to just drink when you're thirsty -- you're already dehydrated by then. Best is to form a routine: drink a glass when you wake up, a glass with each meal, a glass in between meals, and be sure to drink before, during and after exercise. Try to generally keep yourself from getting thirsty.
  • Carry a bottle. A lot of people find it useful to get a big plastic drinking bottle, fill it with water, and carry it around with them all day. I like to keep a glass of water at my desk, and I drink from it all day long. When it's empty, I fill it up again, and keep drinking.
  • Set a reminder. Set your watch to beep at the top of each hour, or set a periodic computer reminder, so that you don't forget to drink water.
  • Substitute water. If you would normally get a soda, or an alcoholic beverage, get a glass of water instead. Try sparkling water instead of alcohol at social functions.
  • Filter. Instead of spending a fortune on bottled water, invest in a filter for your home faucet. It'll make tap water taste like bottled, at a fraction of the price.
  • Exercise. Exercising can help make you want to drink water more. It's not necessary to drink sports drinks like Gatorade when you exercise, unless you are doing it for more than an hour. Just drink water. If you're going to exercise, be sure to drink water a couple hours ahead of time, so that it will get through your system in time, and again, drink during and after exercise as well.
  • Track it. It often helps, when forming a new habit, to keep track of it -- it increases awareness and helps you ensure that you're staying on track. Keep a little log (it can be done on an index card or a notebook), which can be as simple as a tick mark for each glass of water you drink.
I love #1!

Hope this helps someone love ya'll :grouphug:

Amen to the previous post about water! I forgot to mention that water was the third leg of my success. I have used it to replace all the high calorie drinks I was consuming when I was thirsty and/or hungry. I even cut out my beloved Diet Coke after reading a report that even though it has zero calories your body still has some sort fat storing reaction to it. Flavored seltzer water is also a great option because I can't drink straight water all day.

It's also amazing how much a casual restaurant bill goes down when you drink water too.

I'm glad I found this thread. So muh great advice. I have been trying to lose weight for years!! Every time I lose it, within a couple of months all the weight is packed right on again. It's so frustrating. I have to keep reminding myself, "I'm not on a diet, I am changing the way I eat." lol. Hopefully this time I can keep it off though. I cannot deal with walking around in Disney World, especially in the hot weather. I did it once, and I refuse to do it again. I joined the gym lol. Hopefully the fact that I have a bill to pay every month will encourage me to work out. haha. We'll see. I'm doing good so far!
Also, my boyfriend went out and bought me the Wii Fit. I love it. I don't know about some of you but when I am bored I eat. So now instead of eating I play my Wii Fit. lol. The only thing I do not like about it is that my little Mii person gets big whenever I weigh myself. lol. She shrinks when I lose weight though. lol. I guess its their way of encouraging you to lose the weight, I'm not sure though. haha.:cutie:

You CAN SOOOOO DO THAT. That is only 1.5lbs a week. Cut out your sodas and fast food and then dance around while cleaning house and you will be there b4 you know it. I lost my first 35lbs that way. I eat mostly fresh fruits and veggies, NO RED MEAT, and whole wheat pastas and breads if I eat them. YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!! That is an easily obtainable goal.

So, what can I cut out if I don't drink soda and only eat fast food once a month (a McD's double cheeseburger is my guilty pleasure)? I have been trying to eat more fruits and veggies but I don't really like them!!

Maybe it isn't what food to cut out try smaller meals ... 3 main meals and 2 snacks (last meal no later than 6 pm if possible) ... Also if you are someone who enjoys eating healthy already try counting the calories and following portion control... thats what I did 15 lbs down ... also try increasing your workout to allow for maximum calorie intake and out take .,.. If you have trouble figuring out a good calorie intake and outtake (also known as burned calories) here is a good site

LOL! I know I hate that too! You step on and its like "oooh!"
I totally forgot about that. haha. The Wii Fit is not vert motivational afterall! lol. I just can't wait for my Mii to be little haha. My little sister goes on all the time and her Mii is like so tiny you can almost not see her. lol. Meanwhile mine is all big a plump. lol.

I'm going to be at Disney World over the 4th of July this year. So I would like to loose weight just so I can do more, and not be exhausted. My problem is that when I start trying to eat better, all I can think about is junk food. Then I just end up shoving whatever food is available into my mouth. Anyone else have this problem, or have any suggestions on how to not obsess over what I shouldn't be eating?

When you first start to crave something not so great try to nip the craving in the bud by having a small portion of that craving ... my worst craving is chocolate lately so I got some Dove dark chocolate candy bars they are 190 calories for a whole bar so I eat one square when I start to feel the craving hit me ... If you don't lose that craving fast it will just grow and grow to the point that you get completely off track...

I'm a fairly active person and don't drink a lot of sodas, either. I changed from sweet tea (and I'm a native Texan, so that's giving up a LOT! :lmao: ) to regular tea and started counting calories. Basically, I try to keep it at 1200 calories or less each day. Once I'm at my goal weight, I will have to maintain at 1200 calories to 1500. I also carry a lot of water. I went to Walmart and got a 32 oz foam mug to carry - it usually gets filled around twice a day so that I can keep up. I've noticed that when I keep it handy, I stay less hungry and drink more water more often. I also keep almonds handy - I love almonds most out of all the nuts. A small handful of almonds helps to get the snack craving gone. I've found certain fruits are sweeter, so they help the cravings for sweets. On occassion, raisins. Red seedless grapes are definitely my favorite. I'll sometimes have a tablespoon worth of peanut butter for a quick snack, too. I discovered I prefer Golden Delicious apples, so I'll keep some of those on hand, and I love baby carrots. Popcorn is a nice, light snack, and I'll also have a banana on occassion. Just kinda the things I keep on hand in my house. I live by myself, so I only get things that I know are healthy. :hippie:

I leave for DW this Friday, arrive on Saturday. I recently started grabbing things to put together a Disney gift basket for my friends that are traveling w/ me. I got some snack sized candy bars. BIG MISTAKE! I ate them! Oh, the horrors! :scared1: So, I am now waiting until right before I leave to get the "last minute" things - or I'm just getting things I wouldn't personally snack on normally. Think part of it was that "time" for me, but geez. Anyway, back on track and feeling better about my choices - went to the store and once again, just brought home a week's worth of healthier eating things. My house sitter is going to hate staying here!

I got a bonus this past weekend. A friend of mine music directed a musical I went to see. Three of my friends were there, and they all noted that I've lost weight - dropped 20 pounds since the last time they saw me. One of them didn't even recognize me at first, either. Kinda made me feel a bit better! I guess that's the first time someone has seen me since I lost the weight. :dance3:

Hello! I'm new to this thread (actually to this site). And I'm really hoping that maybe I can find the support that I need here. To give you a bit of background, I'm 28. I carry all of my weight in my stomach which is really disheartening. I actually weigh about 50 pounds more than when I had my daughter....which was 8 1/2 year ago. Now to think that I was huge at 140 pounds! I'm a skinny girl living inside a fat girls body. My weight has really brought me down as of late and I'm just so unbelievably unhappy.....and dare I say, borderline depressed. Yet, I'm finding it difficult to find the motivation to work out. I come from a family of skinny people and to hear my sister say "Oh my gosh...I gained 5 pounds and will look HIDEOUS in a bikini", when in reality she is still a size 5...I just want to sling my belly fat at her!
Anyways, I apologize that I am using this post as a vent session or maybe it's just a desperate plea for help. All I want/need is somebody who wants to hold me accountable, to encourage me and I could do the same thing. Once upon a time my dad offered me 20 dollars for every pound I lost with a 5000 dollar shopping spree once I hit my goal weight....sounds like a dream diet huh? I took it as critisism and that's when I think I started eating more. Ugh!!! At any rate, I would love to somehow connect with somebody or multiple somebody's to keep me going. I'm going to Disney in September and I'd really hate to have to hide behind my sweatshirts and jeans like I do now.

Honey the support you need is here and vent anytime you need it. Confidence is my hardest thing for me ... :grouphug: But with love and support anything is possible ...

Hey Pebbles:
We are here for you!!!
I am going to Disney in August...so I'll be on here for a while. COnsider us buds...:yay:
And believe me I know what you are feeling. I weigh 20 lbs more now then when I gave birth 6 years ago and my daughter says it's ok if you're fat mommy...I know she doesn't mean anything terrible by it...she just sees me for what I am-kids have a way of being honest. Still it makes me feel terrible.
Anyway, my point is - it's a great place to get motivation.....
You can do it:cheer2:....trust me if I can do it ANYBODY can.
When I first went to the gym I couldn't even stand to do 2 mins on the elipitical but now I am up to 10 mins...

So Welcome and we can do this together!!!!!

Venting is ok on here......

Best of luck!
Karin
