Looking for the Family Fun Mickey Head design

Hi guys,

I'm the one who asked the original question about the glue seeping through and I'm back to report that I now have 5 Mickey swirl shirts that look AWESOME! :woohoo:

I did use the glue (just plain ol' Elmers) and let it dry completely. It does seep into the shirt and it does spread, so you have to space your swirl lines enough to allow for the spread. Once it was completely dry, I spritzed it with Tulip fabric spray from Michael's - it was a 4 pack of pink, blue, yellow and green. I used two colors on each shirt.

Once the paint was dry, I washed the shirts by hand in the the sink to get the glue off. Then I let them dry and sit for a couple of days before I washed them in the machine. They look great!! The Tulip paints are very bright and the color stayed true even after washing.

I shouldn't have second guessed myself. I was on the right track, I just needed to be more careful with the glue thickness! Give it a try! They're adorable!

I'll post my pics when I have a little bit more time.:goodvibes

Hi there glue seeping person lol!! Did you reapply the glue because some of mine look as if the glue has seeped (sp?) completely through!! Did it still provide the "coverage" necessary to block the spray dye?

Thanks...........sitting here watching glue dry?

Ahhh...that's me - glue seeping person!:goodvibes

I washed the shirt after my first attempt because some of my lines ran together (creating an unsightly blob :rolleyes1 ) After it dried, I reapplied the glue, leaving more space between the swirls and using less glue. The glue did seep completely through -- even stuck to the tray I was using as a separator. I DID NOT use a second coat - one was enough. Once the glue dried completely it does provide the coverage to block the dye, and it was super easy to remove after the fabric paint dried. I just ran it under hot water and rubbed!

Did that help?

Yes - thanks lol.......I am glad I dont have to reapply because they are taking forever to dry as it is.....cant wait for tomorrow when I can spray them. I think I may have done the design too close to the collar though so I may need to think over whether I can add Minnie Ears to the girls shirts.

Thanks again my fellow "glue seeper" lol.

Okay, here are my post-"glue seeping episode" shirts!

Hi Diane,
Thanks! I was really happy with them!

I sprayed the inside color first, just around the glue swirls, so they were kind of in the shape of a Mickey head, then sprayed the outside color in a more circular spray. I was able to go back and make it darker if I wanted and fill in spots that looked odd...

Another tip, I sprayed the paint on a piece of cardboard first so that i could see how it was spraying (a couple of the bottles sprayed in a line more than a circle) and that helped. If you spray from further away, it will give you a more speckled look; closer will give you a thicker look.

ACK!!!

I just got around to spray painting the t-shirts and I think I may have ruined them :(. For some reason I pictured the paint as an aerosol even though I clearly saw the pump sprayer and the pump did not want to cooperate with me. I really dont think they look very good at all right now but am holding out hope that once the glue is washed out of them they will look better. I am so frustrated right now.......

Ok I did the tye dyed shirts now I am going to try these swirled ones. Wish me luck. I just love all of the shirts that have been displayed on here.

For those of you have just done these (with the glue and Tulip Fabric Spray Paint): Can you tell me how soft the paint is?

I was thinking of doing these on PJ shirts? Would they be soft enough to sleep in or does the paint make the shirt stiff?

Also does anyone know a retail store that carries plain PJ shirts/gowns? (You know the long ones) I need to do these in the next few days for a gift.

Wow, I get to answer a question for a design guru! Your designs rock, Amy! I feel honored!:worship:

The paint does make it a little stiffer, but I don't think it would be uncomfortable to sleep in. I would also hazard a guess and say that the more you wash them, the softer they would get...so, maybe after you let them set, throw them in the washer two times?

I don't know anywhere that carries the longer gowns though, I'm sorry. You could try Target and get just a solid color top/gown from their regular sleepwear section, but that would probably more expensive than a craft shirt.

Even us Guru's need help now and then - ha ha! Thank you for your kind words about my designs!

I'll have to search a little online to see what I can find on the gowns. Price is not a real issue but the last time I checked Target, I think the only ones they had something on the chest.

How much was the four pack of fabric spray? and where in the store can I find it?

The four pack was $12. It came with blue, green, yellow and a red/pink. Small bottles, but I did 5 shirts and have plenty left over. They were in the same aisle as the t-shirts, iron-ons, other fabric paints etc.

Hope you can find something online. PJ's are a great idea!

I am sure your designs will look just fine when you wash the glue out of them! They will probably have a unique quality about them. :goodvibes

Have faith Diane! Let us know how they turn out! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you! :goodvibes

Hi everyone!! Just wanted to let you know that I completed 6 t shirts using the Elmers glue method, and they turned out great!! I would like to thank the original poster for putting this method of tie dying on the thread, and pjlla for the great idea of outlining the design using bowls and chalk. It worked really well. I found that once the glue dried that I couldn't get it off, so I took off as much of the cardboard that stuck to the back of the t shirt, then washed it with laundry detergent, and vinegar. I then washed it again inside out and it turned out great. I even printed on the back of my "Grumpy" t shirt with "Grumpy's wife" using the same method, but not spraying it with the fabric dye as heavily, and it also turned out very well. So thanks for all the help with my t shirt project and have a great day!!:cheer2: :cheer2:

You have to shake those pump bottles forever before you spray them or they come out all gunky...

I know this because I started spraying BEFORE I read the directions-oh, so typical of me .

I did find PJ's at Target last night - I had to buy the light gray ones, so I hope they turn out OK.

I was doing the glue at 11:00 at night and let it dry overnight and some this morning. Then I did the Tulip spray paint.

Now my questions:

How long do I have to wait before rinsing out the glue?
and What would happen if I wash them today? (I know the instructions say to wait 72 hours) Would the paint wash out completely or just fade? Does anyone know?

I did put in a call to the manufacturer but thought my fellow dis'ers may have tried this already.

These are for a gift and I was hoping to give them tomorrow if possible. See what happens when you procrastinate! ha ha

I never did wash out the glue on it's own. Call me lazy. I just threw it in the washer when I washed the shirt for the first time and it came out. No harmful effects.

I washed one of my first shirts immediately after the paint dried. The paint did not wash out, but it wasn't as bright as the next shirt I made where I did leave it on for a few days. (Although, I may not have put as much paint on it either since it was the first one I tried.) It still looks nice, though.

If you really want to give it tomorrow, i would say let the paint dry and then go ahead and wash it. I also read somewhere it helps if you heat set it first, so I turned the hair dryer on mine before I washed it.

Good luck!
