Looking for the Family Fun Mickey Head design

Well, I know it has been some time since I posted about my results.

The first shirts I did, were horrible. I think everything that I could have done wrong, I did. Long story short, I decided to try the color block that was mentioned before. Wow - that stuff is great. Put it on, let it dry, spray the paint, let it dry, wait the 3 days and wash! No rinsing, no scrubbing, nothing. It was kinda expensive at $5 for a small bottle (which is probably enough for 3 or 4 shirts) but worked wonderfully.

I wish that I was able to get white PJ's but the light grey ones were the lightest solid color PJ's I could find. Here are the pics...

Cute!!!! I like the gray!

I was just looking through the above posts and have a few ideas. Instead of using cardboard between your shirt, use a plastic bag print side away from glue over the cardboard or in my case cookie sheets. The shirt lifts right off the plastic, no peeling paper. Another poster asked about lumps still deposited on the shirt. The first one I did, I washed in cold water...did not want to wreck paint...well the glue did not come out all the way and got clumply in spots. I threw it back in this time in hot water and heavy duty cycle. The glue washed right out and no lumps like when done in cold water.
Just a few ideas I hope can help someone else. I really like seeing everyone's finished shirts. I have 3 with paint drying now and 2 more to paint, then I will try to post pics.:)

I just saw Amy mention colorblock. Can anyone tell me what it is and where to get it?

I saw it at the craft store (AC Moore) when I picked up the paint. The paint was Tulip brand, I think the color block was also.

Yes, it is Tulip brand as well. I found it next to the fabric paint as just2girls1 stated.

Okay, has anyone tried to just dye the shirts one solid color with the glue mixture? I was thinking of doing that. But I am afraid that the dye would still run after all the glue ran out.

Okay first of all i should have done a "test shirt"

What I used:
flour and water method
simply spray soft fabric spray (tie dye in a can)

So I made all the mickey swirls last night, let it dry until this evening.
i sprayed my first shirt with two colors orange and yelow
at that point i thought it turned out pretty well.

I then started on my 2nd shirt, this one blue, orange, and yellow. when a sprayed the blue on the paper towel it looked great but when i sprayed it on the shirt it decided to "spit". i then sprayed waaayyy to much blue to try and fix it. i waited a few...biting my fingernails then sprayed the orange. it all blended together into this brownish color. MY FIRST SIGH OR GRRRRR...

then i started to peel the mixture off the first one and it is apparent my lines were nowhere near thick enough. although you can make out the mickey head and i suppose i could use reg. fabric paint.

the blue one which i already decided i was going to scrap. i started peeling of the mixture and all the parts that were thick actually drew all the blue paint. only a few parts actually came out white.

so tell me i should do
can i wash out this flour mixture and start over?
should i just go over the lines and make it thicker? using elmers or the same mixture?

I tried linking my pictures but i cant seem to do it

PLEASE HELP!!!

I did not use the flour mixture but I did use the Simply spray...Did you let it dry- (the paint) for 72 hours?

I never did wash out the glue on it's own. Call me lazy. I just threw it in the washer when I washed the shirt for the first time and it came out. No harmful effects.

Now it seems like my kind of project!

My SIL saw this thread and we have been talking about ordering shirts, so she wanted to try these. I am the guinea (sp?) pig and trying it first. I bought the Simply Spray Fabric Paint.

Well, I have the elmer's glue on a shirt now. The lines looked really good until they flattened out and now there are some lines that ran together and it is taking forever to dry. Putting it outside in the sun would prob. work in most places where it is not as humid as Florida, it just seemed to get mushy outside. So I brought it in and we will go to the movies. Hopefully it will be dry when we get back.

I can't wait to paint them.

I will see what happens. :yay:

We dried ours inside too! Good Luck!

Here are my pictures.....

First I attempted to trace an outline with chalk on the shirts but found it was just easier to draw it free hand.

This is how they looked once the glue dried....

Next I took them outside to the lawn and sprayed them with white paint...I tried to have the girls different by giving us a Minnie bow.....the paint was a pain in the tookus - lol. It kept clogging up. I really wanted to have some more "spray" but really, the paint was horrible....considering how difficult spraying was I am surprised how well they turned out.

I drew these using a couple of bowls and a stick of sidewalk chalk. I used flour & water paste in a mustard bottle but it was really hard to peel off--in fact when the kids tried to peel it off they ripped a 2 inch hole in DH's shirt which I kind of fixed with an iron-on patch on the inside.

The kids wanted just plain white swirls but I persuaded DD that a pink bow for her Minnie head would be cute. DH wanted his "psychedelic"--it's the Tulip 4 pack of neon colors over a white background.

I also made a set on gray t-shirts but they didn't come out as well as these.

A DISer saw us at Pop Century and asked whether we'd gotten the design from these boards--we were in a rush and didn't have time to talk.

Thanks to everyone who posted pictures and tips for making these! We got a number of compliments on them.

My AC Moore had the fabric sprays and Color Block on clearance yesterday. $2.50 for a spray (only certain colors, blue, orange, and purple, I think) and the color block for $1.99! I bought four sprays and 1 color block. (I think I'll go back tomorrow and see if they still have the color block and I'll grab one more of those) I did my test shirt last night. I'll post the results after I wash it!

ETA, just checked the shirt and the "Royal Blue" looks awfully purple right now. Looked blue when I sprayed it, but it looks more purpl-y now. Good thing I didn't do a Men's XXL, b/c I don't think DH would wear this color! We'll see how it looks when I wash it! Maybe that's why the color was on clearance!

ETA, has anyone tried using the flour & water mixture and then just washing them to remove the four & water? It seems like peeling it off is a real pain. I'm just wondering in case I want to try that technique, too!

This is such a great idea! We had so much fun making our shirts. We used the Elmer's Glue and Tulip paint. The kids loved spraying them. I let them sit for 3 days before washing. :laundy: I had a problem with two only not really washing well (the glue was stuck still mainly on the red paint). Those two shirts I ended up washing in hot water to desolve the glue. Well it worked but the colors are also not as bright as the others. It's okay - it's just a more vintage/worn look! :yay:

In this photo, the shirt on the left is the one I had to wash in hot water. You can see the red is less bright compared to the one next to it.

The shirt below is one of the ones I had to wash in hot water so . . . you can see the color is not as bright.

I don't want to be a thread killer so I'm bumping this!!! I want to see all the finished shirts! :cool1:
