Looking for the Family Fun Mickey Head design

I think it just needs to dry, so sunshine isn't necessary.

And we used three different colors of paint on each shirt. I just suggest a true contrast between the paint and the shirt.

The one that came out the best was orange and red paint against a green shirt. I didn't actually get a photo of it though. The worst one was light silver paint over the mickey head, and light orange over the mickey ears. Not enough contrast.

I made my first one today. I think I either had my flour/water the wrong consistency (it looked mustard-like to me), or my bottle had too big of a hole. (I used a squeeze bottle for decorating cookies.) My lines turned out really goopy. But -- they were *so* goopy that it looks like I did it that way on purpose, so I'm still happy with how it came out. Thanks for a great project.

When I made mine last summer I had goopy problems too, where lumps would come out of the bottle and my lines wouldn't be straight. So, after it "set", and before I sprayed the paint on, I took an exacto knife and cut away some of the blobs. It made mine lines look straighter.

But you are right, the way yours came out looks perfect!

I really like yours!!! And my lines were gloopy too. This weekend I'll have to lay them out and take pictures of just the shirts.

I think I've figured out the "secret" to a non-lumpy, non-globby flour mixture. (Only took till my 4th shirt to figure it out. LOL!)

Start with a cup of warm water. Add a spoonful of flour then mix it in. Then add another spoonful of flour, mix and repeat until the correct consistency is reached.

I had previously been starting with a cup of flour and adding water to it. No matter how smooth I *thought* I got it, it still had globs in it.

Did you guys wash and dry your shirts before you did the swirls and fabric paint on them?

BTW design_mom that works like a charm! Definately not goopey by doing it that way.

I saw this method in a Wondertime newsletter and wondered if I could make a Mickey head this way. Here's a link:

http://wondertime.go.com/create-and-play/crafts/science-project.html

I was thinking I would make a Mickey shape by using a cup to make the ears and a bowl to make the head.

I've read that the flour mixture can be difficult to get off so I was thinking this might be an easy method to try. Design_Mom-yours came out really cute and a lot more colorful than using the method I want to try.

ms_mckenna: I've done four shirts so far. I've washed/dried the second through fourth prior to swirling/painting. However, I didn't pre-wash the first one (which is the one in the photo above.) I can't really tell any difference. The shirt above was washed/dried after it was completed, though -- and it still stayed that bright!

By the way, I didn't find anything labeled "fabric spray paint" so I got fabric spray dye (for tye dying.) it worked great. Very bright and the shirt doesn't feel "painted."

By the way, the flour/water does come off in small pieces but it's not "impossible" to get off. (From the instructions, I was expecting it to peel off in one big piece.) Just bend the shirt to make it crack, then flake off the pieces with your fingernails.

LovesDumbo -- On one of the threads here, someone used the Wondertime instructions to make a Mickey head. She posted pictures and they turned out really cute. Looked sort of like lollipops! :) I can't find the thread though.

Oh this is going to be fun!! Thanks for the post OP. I am not so crafty. But, I think I can pull this off!:thumbsup2 I'm so excited:yay: :yay:

Those are so cool! I may just have to make these for our September trip! I get family Fun magazine and somehow I missed this project. What issue was it in?

ETA -- If you wanted to do a colored shirt -- maybe you could spray bleach over the design-? I'll probably try with the spray fabric paint on white, but if someone wants to try bleach, let us know how it works!!

I now can't decide whether to do the spiral tie dye mickey shirts or the flour gloop t shirts! Argh!

Maybe I'll do the gloop shirts for the winter trip, make them sorta christmassy red/green/gold sparkles and use long sleeved t-shirts.

the mind reels...

Here is a picture of my son wearing one of the swirl head shirts we made. The colors were supposed to be green/red for Christmas but turned out more like green and hot pink. Oh well. My flour mixture was very clumpy but I think they still turned out cute.

I tried making some swirls with elmer's glue too instead of using the flour mixture because I read somewhere that the glue would save chipping off the flour mixture and that it washed right out. My experience was that the glue did not wash right out and that getting the glue off was about an equal hassle as chipping the flour mixture off.

Where are the spiral tie dye directions? I may need to try them, too! I bough tthe stuff to do the goopy flour ones today! Is there a reason you can't just soak the flour goop in water after you are done to get the flour off?

We had the same red = hot pink issue when I did it. but we were doing red/yellow, so pink/yellow also worked. By the way, if you add the flour to the water (not the water to the flour) when you make your goop, it is a lot less lumpy. But, I kind of like the gloopy look. (My first one looked like that, too.)

Is there a reason you can't just soak the flour goop in water after you are done to get the flour off?

I think it's because you need to heat-set the dye before you wash it. So you spray it on, peel off the flour, then put the shirt in the dryer for 20 minutes (see package directions on your dye). If you tried to rinse out the flour, I think you'd also rinse away your dye.
