Looking for a home for 2 wonderful cats..Update: The boys have a home!

Keep your chin up. You are doing the right thing and things will fall into place.

Just a slight update on the boys...

I thought I had found a home for them and I was so happy. The woman and I spoke on the phone and I told her everything I could think of that she should know about them. She had apparently lost her two cats in her recent divorce and had been looking for just the right ones to adopt when she saw my post on Craigslist. She seemed like she really wanted them and we set up a meeting the next evening.

Two hours later I had an email with her backing out. She said she was just moving into her new home and wasn't unpacked yet and wasn't ready for them. She said if I still had them on the 27th she'd be glad to take them. I told her I thought she sounded great on the phone and I'd hold them for her. I asked if she could still come by to meet them and to give Max a chance to get used to her and have not heard back from her.

I'm extremely discouraged. We have to move in 4 months, but I know we will not be able to find an affordable apartment that will allow us to have 4 cats.

One other plus with a rescue group as opposed to adopting to somebody through an ad is that they are very selective about where the kittens go (lots of paperwork and red tape). While that can make it hard on the average person wanting to adopt, it does make it more likely that the new home will actually be a "forever home".

I commend you so much for trying to help these babies. As a long time adopter of abandoned animals myself, I know how hard it can be. Personally, I would probably go with the rescue group, and here's why.

Many years ago I knew a guy who adopted an Irish setter from a classified ad. The family loved the dog dearly but couldn't keep him for some reason. They were being very selective about where he went. They liked this guy and let him have the dog. The first couple of weeks, the dog went everywhere with him (had a great time riding around with him). After that the new wore off, and he took the dog and put him out on the side of the road. When his sister found out (she was a friend of mine), she threw a fit and tried desparately to find the dog (searching the area where he was abandoned). She didn't find him. We hoped that someone rescued him but never knew.

Whatever you decide to do, thank you so much for trying.

Thank you so much to everyone for all of your kind words and for the list of shelters.

At this point we are still going to keep actively looking in the hopes that someone we know will decide to take them in. In the meantime we are exploring low-cost neuter clinic options. I have contacted a few rescue groups to ask for help and nothing so far. It's still more than we can afford but we do realize the urgency of getting them fixed, so we are in the process of figuring out how to make that happen. . Most of the clinics also do an exam and vaccinations as part of the neutering package, so Max and Sage will have that taken care of as well.

Ideally, we would keep them. Needless to say we are head over heels in love with both of them (although I will admit to a special bond with Sage, the all-black kitty). We have even chosen our own little names for them; Gizmo (Max, because he "sings" like Gizmo from Gremlins and he has his coloring) and for Sage, Wilbur (from Charlotte's Web) because he is the runt.

The other night I was in bed researching shelters and I saw a picture of two sibling cats together in one of the cages (though I admit it was a bigger cage than usual). I looked over at Max and Sage who were lying beside me on their teddy, both sucking away, making slurping sounds, and I started to cry thinking of them in that cage.

I don't know what will happen. Maybe next week they will have a new home. Maybe we will keep hiding them from the landlord and get lucky and find an apartment that will let us have all 4 (although I am not optimistic, it was very hard finding a place that let us have our 2 cats. we had to twist our current landlord's arm). Who knows. I will keep everyone posted.

Most rescue groups also keep a list of available apartments for those that have multiple cats.

Really? Wow! I never knew that. Thank you so much. I will have to look into that, it will certainly come in handy when it's time to move.

I hope you find a loving home for those wonderful 2 kitties. I've gotten 2 separate sibling sets over the years. I have 11 kitties and, thusly, can't take anymore in.

I too have two sets of siblings, but only 10 cats.

I remember when I only had one, whenever we rented somewhere I offered to pay an extra deposit for the cat just to be sure I could get what I wanted. Maybe this would work for you OP.

Thank for you continuing to keep us updated. I hope you can find a clinic with reasonable rates soon. You really do have such a great heart!

pm me if you are still looking for a home for the kitties. I will have my dh ask my BIL if he would like them (he lives alone and is a loner but loves animals). He already has one male cat that is about a year old but may be willing to take these two....

No news to report, just wanted to share some video and pics!

Oops, never mind, I see they are both MALES (I was worried they would mate and make more kittens you don't need!).

Best of luck to you and thank you for trying to find good homes for these two. They are adorable!

They won't mate but soon, very soon, they will spray to mark their territory and you will not like it. I raised an orange tabby and all black (Amos and The Kingfisher) who were litter mates. At 6 mos, one day out of the blue, they began to spray. I scooped them up, took them to the vet for 'the procedure' and the cleaning began. I had to throw tons of stuff away. Keep your closet door closed.

Btw, I wish I was near you. I'd take them in although Sophie Tucker would not be happy at first. What we need around here is some action and I just know those two run and tear with each other!!! lol!!! Good luck.

Just bumping my post in case someone sees this who might want them...still looking for a home for the babies.

I've been part of a 'scuffle' where we have transported cats clear across the country. I'd be willing to take part in this. One person drives about 100 miles to meet the next person, who then drives 100 miles, etc, until the pet is home. We did this around he Katrina time, and it worked well. If someone wants them from afar, maybe we could work this out. I think I'm about 100 miles from the OP..id's be willing to drive for the next 100 miles (round trip, of course). I do think the OP should go through a rescue group to get them fixed first, thought, especially if they are going to a home with another cat.

I have tried to ask for help from rescue groups... spent the past week contacting them. They just keep giving me contact info for "low cost" spay/neuter cents. $75 per cat is more than we can afford right now but we are trying to come up with the money.

And, what you're suggesting sounds like a great idea. I just want my boys to have a forever home.

I'm not sure exactly about Albany, but when I went to Manhattan it was about a 3 1/2 - 4 hour drive. Sorry if Manhattan and Albany are nowhere near each other but my wife is the driver of the two of us and I have no clue about these things....

When we go to New York, we hit Albany at about 3 hours. It's pretty much straight West on the Turnpike from Boston.

We already have 2 cats of our own, but I will keep an ear out for anyone looking to adopt. You're sweet for helping the kittens.

I'm in the south, so I probably wouldn't be much help, but I'd be willing to do so if it worked out where I could be useful.

I know that the Dis would frown on us sending money directly to the OP, but I wonder whether a rescue group would be willing to accept donations dedicated to these two kittens? I would be willing to pitch in and others might be too.

:goodvibes It's very kind of you to offer! I would feel bad to let anyone else spend their hard-earned money on a responsibility I took on, though. When we took them in, it's true I had no idea I'd still have Max and Sage a week away from November. But I feel like since I did make that choice it's up to me.

I'm getting so discouraged! I've had three people email me in the past two days and tell me they are interested in coming to meet the cats. None of them ever actually follow through. Sigh.

How do your brother-in-law and his girlfriend feel about you giving away their cats? I would not wish to adopt a pet if it's ownership was in question.
