Just wondering-I thought I remembered that when I first started here (1998), there weren't seperate forums, just one board. Does anyone remember that or is my memory bad? And if there was just one board, does anyone remember at what point they went to different forums? And I vaguely remember something about some big "crash". When did that happen and why? I was just trying to remember the history of the DIS boards. I'd welcome any trivia.

Your memory is fine -- there was just one board. :) And I can't remember why the crash happened, but it was a doozy. So many of us had to start over again from scratch. I can't remember when they began to add different forums... maybe that was what partially caused the crash? My memory is pretty foggy too, I guess. lol

Yep, I remember there only being one board. I also remember what a HUGE deal it was when the DIS got their 10,000th member!

I lost probably 3000 posts and my original join date in the big "crash". :)

oh I was pretty new when the big crash was so I didn't lose to many posts but I remember it. One board and things were so much simplier.
I miss those days when all the names seemed familiar.

Remember canned corn on city hall steps, emu legs, Dan Murphy ruled the boards with a kind word for everyone. CharlieNJ had such great crazy stories/posts.

I dont even remember when I joined but I think it was 2002?

I remember all that fun stuff - a very different place now.

Yup, one board. I remember that too, but it was way more difficult to read since whatever Pete was running at that time showed replies stacked under the original thread and if the topic was a hot one it would soon roll off the page and you'd have to do lots of scrolling. I know that doesn't describe it well, but there are still some message boards that use that system and it's still hard to follow! :lmao:

I don't really think things are all that different, just way more people with various opinions that aren't always expressed well.

Oh my! I remember those too!

In late '98 (I think) I remember the one board and while I only read never posted in those days people were always being yelled at to stay on topic. I think that that was why the community board was formed when it went to more then one board. I think there were two crashes. I do know one was around late March/very early April 2000.

I've been around a lot longer than my info says....I distinctly remember MORE than 1 major crash. Yes, the DIS is very different now.

I remember the name of that VERY LONG thread was "The Strangest thing You've Ever Seen in WDW", and it contained such gems as the super-stinky grandma in the runaway wheelchair, the dwarf brawl in Fantasyland and other hilarious tales, as well as the canned corn and emu legs.:rotfl2:

I miss a lot of the people that used to hang here too, and I hope they are well. :)

Ditto! :)

Yes, I remember the 1 Board DIS. Remember the DIS/wdwinfo t-shirts? If I remember correctly, the 2nd board was a type of community board for general chit-chat. Or was that a resorts board?

And yes, there were at least 2 major crashes.

I remember the original thread that led to the lime green official DIS color. The corn thread is a classic.

Yep, miss those days, too!

Sweet googa-mooga! Just looked at my profile and I've been a member for a shade over 9 years!! HAs it really been that long? I don't remember the board ever being much different than it is now (layout wise), though there was a debate board I never dared touch.

That had to be the best thread EVER! :rotfl2:
I remember the original board as well. (Though I don't post as often as I lurk)

Yup - sure do remember! Wow - that was a long time ago! I remember having to reregister with either the crash or the move to vBulletin - I don't recall which!

Me, too. :)

That thread had me literally :rotfl2:. That is my favorite all-time thread. I think WillyJ told us about the dwarf wars, and wasn't the grandma in the wheelchair the one where she went into the Rivers of America? something like that -- the people eating canned corn on the steps of City Hall -- so many funny, funny stories.

I joined in the summer of 1997. We were getting ready for our first trip to wdw and I was doing research and came across the original board and Pete.
That's the biggest change IMHO, you don't see Pete responding to any threads now, back then he responded to every thread. And it seemed like he knew everything about wdw and he was always quick to offer help/suggestions.
The first format was a huge pain as someone else mentioned. You had to click on each response in order to read it. Took all day to read a long thread.
A lot of good memories over the years and I sure miss a lot of folks that aren't here anymore.

I lost sooooo many posts in that famous crash! I remember being able to recognize almost all the posters by name back then. I can't believe I've been here for 9 years!!
