Loaning/borrowing on a Nook?

ok, i feel like a dummy, but what is ADE? is that an application i can download? lol

One of the easiest ways to find free ebooks, is to check out http://booksontheknob.blogspot.com/. Also, usually whatever you come across of Amazon for free (which I think is easier to search for free books since you can sort by price) - just check Barnes & Noble and it will usually be free there too. Also, when you are looking at a free ebook on Amazon, look at the bottom of the page where it shows "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought"- usually they will all be free as well.

I agree with Cindy that there are so many good free ebooks out there that I am having a hard time getting though all of them. Don't bother looking in the B&N "free" ebook section- it is worthless for entire free ebooks, it is usually all samples. www.nookboards.com is another place to find out about free ebooks.

Have fun!

I'm new to all this and trying to learn as much as possible because DD is getting a nook for christmas.
This website seems to only feature free kindle books. Can you still get them and "convert" them to nook books?

There are lots of free Nook books mentioned on that site, but it seems that sometimes they come in waves. Legally you cannot alter the Kindle books to work on the Nook.

thanks :) do i need that if the books are in PDF format?

I'm really not sure because I use ADE for all e-books that aren't from B&N since it works so nicely and easily.

You only need it if the books have DRM. Mostly books from places like Borders have the DRM. Many private publishers don't require it. I have about 250 non-DRM pdf and e-pub books on my Nook and all were downloaded without ADE. I have 25-30 that required ADE. Most booksellers that require the use of ADE offer that as the method of download when you purchase the book. Other's just let you save the book to your harddrive.

thanks :) i think i found some good books on obooko.com, and they're all free, if anyone else is interested.

Ok I am really confused. I can download from B&N but how do I download from amazon??? Do I have to go to amazon on my nook or do I have to have the nook connected to my computer? Please help!

I haven't read the entire thread but I just wanted to explain my experience.

If you are looking for ffree books go to bn.com and look in their ebooks. Instead of typing in an author or a title type in 0.00 and a good number of books will come up.

I am finding more and more books listing the LEND ME symbol on it.

You cannot- their e-books can only be read on their ebook device- the Kindle.

Great thread. Santa is bringing me a Nook for Cmas so I'm learning all I can now :thumbsup2

I have had my Nook for about 2 months but have only really been using if for the last 2 weeks. So far I have found these websites have a lot of useful information on how to use your Nook:

http://nooktalk.net/
http://www.nook-look.com/
http://www.nookboards.com/forum/
http://nookowners.com/

And I use these websites to find all kinds of free books.

http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page
http://booksontheknob.blogspot.com/
http://manybooks.net/
http://books.google.com/ebooks

Great links. I still haven't quite figured out Gutenberg and Manybooks yet?? Maybe it's just me, but I haven't found anything of interest.

OMG y'all, i am SO technically challenged! it takes me FOREVER just to d'l a free book! :rotfl: i'm sitting here waiting for "a tale of two cities", and it has taken over 10 minutes, and it's about half done. next is "david copperfield", which i had already d'l, but it turned out to be completely in GERMAN! LMAO!

I'll probably be right there with ya. I'm not tech savvy at all. All of my freebies are in my B&N account right now since I have to wait for Santa to bring my device. I might be more excited about Cmas this year than my 7 year old.

Don't forget about other library systems besides your own. Here in PA, I can get library outside my home city/county. I live in Central PA but have an account in Philadelphia. My library system does not have Ebooks but Phila does. All I had to do was apply online, give them my local account info and they sent me a Phila library card with internet access.

Not sure if any other states do this.

Other than a general understanding of the product, I don't know which I should get. I think it would be the Nook because you can get books from libraries (and you can't with the Kindle, if I'm not mistaken).

OTOH, I also like the sound of being able to browse the internet with a WiFi version (can leave my laptop at home when I travel - don't have internet on my phone).

Someone mentioned the Sony version too.

Can anybody give me a brief idea of which of these would be the best to order? I can tell different people have their favorites so this may be asking too much. DH offered to buy me one for Christmas, but I don't know enough about them to make an informed decision.

I am thinking of asking DH for the Nook for Christmas. I am such a huge reader, but really not sure how I will like it. I love holding a book in my hand. But I love the ease of the Nook, with free books and not taking a ton of books on vacation.
