LIVE FROM the Disney Wonder Holiday cruise 2011!

BTW your PTR was equally great, certainly will help our Apr 22nd WONDERful MR adventure.

I'll be looking forward for your snorkeling report. You had mentioned not carrying goggles and stuff, how did that work out, any sea sickness/water temps comfort? Hope everyone had great port day!!!

Loving your updates. Palo all at once. I like the possibilities. Will have to try that when we go in April.

Welcome to Puerto Vallarta!

Another sunny day in spectacular Mexico as we pull into the port of PV. This is a port I have been to lots of times so I am excited to be back and do something through Disney – the Paradise Beach adventure. The resort they use for this is actually the very same resort I stayed in as a 16 year old some 20+ years ago with my parents on our first trip to MX

We are leaving around 10am, so I had a chance to order breakfast into the cabin from the dining rooms again. I had French toast, a bagel with lox and capers and a veggie omelet. All three were delicious and piping hot. Our usual room service guy, Raymond, (who brings us Palo all the time) set up the table with the white linen and all. We tip him generously each time because he is so darn nice and caring. He even went to get the girls soda from the fountain upstairs last night, just because my 6yo said, “I am thirsty” as he is setting up the table. Oy.

Found my coffee spot! No longer in misery. The “Cove” which has the adult only pool (very quiet and peaceful, BTW), has an actual cafe with great espresso. So I had them make me a mocha this am and it was delicious. They even put the chocolate in it the way they should, not just sprinkle powder on top! ;)

OK, back to Manzanillo and yesterday. It is such a nice town! I really think Disney, Princess and Carnival need to add this port permanently to their MR run! I realize it’s farther south (so more gas needed, more $$$) but the town is gorgeous and the people are warm and friendly. They don’t push all their junk on you on the beach either. And the weather is perfect year round. The waters are warm and the beaches are the way a true “Riviera” should be! We did the catamaran snorkel trip to Elephant Rock first, followed by some beach time near the ship. It was about 80 but the humidity was pretty high (in the 90s).

The snorkeling was fantastic with very warm waters and lots of fish… The tour is simple with a 5 minute air conditioned bus ride to the catamaran (we walked on the way home), followed by about 30 minutes on the cat going out to the island. The waters were very calm because most of the ride is in the C-shaped bay in protected waters. No problems whatsoever going out and the kids really enjoyed the trip on the cat. We have some great pix, which I will post when we get back. The snorkeling is about an hour or so in a totally protected cove so it’s flat and easy, evey for younger kids. The older girls had the underwater camera from Kodak that DH bought and they spent a lot of time making movies. Lots of coral too. Now, if you are a diver and have been around the world, I have to say this is not a premier diving destination like St Lucia or even parts of Hawaii. But, there is a lot of sea life, visibility is good and the waters are very calm and safe for little kids. It was a great first real snorkel trip for my girls. As for the equipment, they gave us all masks, snorkels and fins as well as optional life vests. The masks were the good, silicone kind that didn’t fog in much at all. They took it out of soapy water so I know they were well cleaned beforehand. The waters were warm and we would have been fine without the wet suits, but it made for much more comfort to have them. My kids and I are cold blooded.  Most people just brought a towel to the excursion (which Disney provided at the gangway going out). We were overprepared but that’s ok. Oh, forgot to mention they had finger foods, fruits and free cocktails for the adults. DH liked that part! ;). The ride back was relaxing and we just sat out on the deck of the cataran and sunbathed. Could have done that for a few more hours! Then we headed to a beach nearby (we walked there) and sat out for about an hour, just playing in the sand and sun. It was getting VERY warm and humid so we walked back to the ship. Around the ship in port, there is really nothing so if you want to just walk out, you won’t find much to see or do. But lots of air conditioned cabs are around.

So we got back around 1:55 (to be precise) along with about 8 other tours. So we look at our navigator only to find that yup, the buffet closes at 2pm. So literally EVERYONE is racing up to the buffet. They let in about ½ of the 100+ people and turn away the other ½. I am NOT kidding! It was ridiculous! We got in and right after us, the lady was taking away the serving spoons for all the dishes so you could not even go back for seconds. DH and I were fuming.

This is actually a HUGE gripe for me. The food choices on the ship are minimal from about 2pm till your sit down dinner. It’s either 1) wraps that the kids don’t eat or 2) fatty hamburgers and hot dogs with fries at the pool. Room service is the same menu as the 2 above. So if you are coming home from an excursion and you are starved because you didn’t get lunch on your trip out, you are again eating a burger and fries, for the 5th day in a row! I just don’t understand Disney in this. Every other ship I have been on from every other line has had a buffet going all day and usually through the late night, like midnight, if not 24 hours (like on Princess). It’s unbelievable that Disney permanently closes their only decent food source at 2pm, not to open it again till the next morning! I just don’t get it. People were FURIOUS yesterday when the lady told them they could not come in. Talk about crappy customer service for the price of this cruise. One person was heading down to guest services to complain. Not sure it would do much but I can see why he was blue in the face when his 3 kids were told they were 1 minute late. OK, off the soap box for now….

Anyway, we ate at BBB (food was again less then stellar so maybe all those people didn’t miss out on much) and then went swimming. We had all sorts of fun things planned, like the Wonder Quest with the kids, an animation lecture, etc, but we all just zonked in our room after the tour. We rallied by 6 for Toy Store, the musical, which was AMAZING! I mean serious production value! It was so well done (basically the 1st movie is acted out) that they could have sold tickets to the show. It was packed though and they only had 2 shows so some people didn’t get seats. Maybe they will repeat it on the last sea day, I hope? I would seriously see it again. Then we all went to dinner (Tritons) and had a lovely meal! Our servers were on fire last night, with Eve giving us great riddles all night and Julia, our assistant server, pleasing the kids with loads of jokes and napkin folded shapes! It was great and I was pleased to see all 3 kids sit through a 2 hour meal with a smile on their faces. Food was also very good, unlike the first night in the dining room. I had cod on risotto and a side of grilled eggplant with delicious couscous. DH had lobster pasta. Kids had steak! Didn’t realize they were such carnivores. LOL. The appetizer was jumbo shrimp and that was a big hit with all too. Desserts were the Mickey bars with sprinkles, soufflé, chocolate mousse, apricot bread pudding…. We didn’t complain! ;)

After dinner, we dropped the kids off and headed out to see our fave house band, Speakerbox. They really are amazing! I really hope they stay on for a long time because you won’t believe how good they sound! Trent, the assistant cruise director, was once again the life of the party, and he got everyone up and dancing. Then, they had a 45 minute set by a comedian/ventriloquist, Taylor Mason, who was also just fabulous. He had just boarded the ship in Manzanillo so he had a lot of great jokes about “the international airport” in Manzanillo. LOL. I usually don’t like these variety acts but he was actually very, very funny, especially with his puppet act. He is in the main theater tonight for the family friendly act and I think we will try to go see him again!

After Taylor, it was 80s one hit wonders in Wavebands. What a great time! Trent had everyone up on the dance floor guessing the names of tunes the DJ played. If you guessed right, you won a free shot of some sort of delicious blue alcoholic drink. It was sooooo much fun. Some of the people actually recited word for word the lyrics of songs like Bust A Move and Come on Eileen (you try singing that song!). DH and I both got our shot and felt fine afterwards! Great laughs all around and it seriously reminded me of my college days of going to frat parties and singing, “It takes two to make a thing go right! OW!” Speakerbox came back on around 11:30 and sang about 10 more 80s songs, but we were pretty much beat so we left with smiles on our faces around midnight.

So today is PV and we are off shortly for the excursion. I’ll report back tomorrow and let you all know how the Paradise Beach trip went. The seas are calm and the sun is out in full force, so I have a feeling it’ll be great. I am packing my ipod and kindle and can’t wait to catch the rays. I leave you today with Eve’s best riddle of the night:

You throw away the outside, cook the inside, eat the outside and throw away the inside. What vegetable is it?

After I check my emails and FB, I come here to check in on your report! :cool1:

I can't wait to hear about your excursion today, I have that booked next month! I love the details you give! Can't wait to see pics:thumbsup2

Welcome to Cabo San Lucas!

Wow, what a night! I think our luck of smooth seas has quickly come to a screeching halt as we head back north towards LA! We left PV around 7pm (beautiful and picturesque sailaway) and headed north to Cabo. Sometime around 3am the sea gods were out waving their wands because the ship was M~O~V~I~N~G. Most of us were up a few times throughout the night. I cannot imagine how people were doing in the bow or very aft of the ship. I went out to the balcony and looked out the length of the ship and the front and back were seriously bouncing around. Nanny felt queasy but the rest of us thought it was a fun Disneyland ride! However, we are all dragging today a bit from the lack of sleep.  Anyway, Cabo is gorgeous and sunny and warm, around 75 degrees today. We are in the protected bay, tendering everyone ashore. It’s all very organized and easy, especially if you have an excursion through Disney (like we do today). We meet in a lounge at a set time, they walk us down to the tenders and off we go. We are scheduled for the dolphin swim with the girls this morning at 11 so we are lounging around in the cabin and having a nice breakfast (brought back from the buffet) instead of rushing out the door.

But back to PV and yesterday. We did the Paradise Beach resort getaway through Disney and I have to say, it was a BLAST!!! DH declared that it was the “best” activity we have done in our 8+ visits to PV with various ships. Mind you, this is totally a kid-themed activity, so if you are adults looking of peace and quiet, this aint it! But they had SOOOOO much for everyone to do at this gorgeous resort that there was not a dull moment! The ride to the resort is about 20 minutes in an air conditioned bus, followed by a pretty long walk to get to the back of the resort. We picked 1 of the 2 huge pool areas and put our stuff down there. It had a ginormous pool, 2 huge concrete slides, some bridges to run through, and a wonderful, wonderful beach area complete with nice loungers and really huge sunshades made of actual wood and coconut tree leaves. They had free boogie boards for the kids and the water was perfect for it. The kids spent equal time in the ocean and the pool. My only complaint is that it was too short. We got there around 10:30 and left at 2:30. We could have stayed another 3-4 hours. As a matter of fact, I don’t know why Disney wouldn’t let you. The ship didn’t leave till 7pm! We thought about taking a taxi back (with quite a few others from the ship thinking the same thing) but then we were like, nah, we don’t know what we are doing and we don’t have enough cash. Bummer because as we were leaving, they were doing free scuba lessons in the pool for kids! I really, really wanted my older DD especially to get a taste for that since she’s 11 and you have to be 12 by Padi to get started on scuba lessons in the states. DH and I both dive (rarely but we do) so we’d love to have her certify someday. I wanted to see if she would even like it by trying this. But the bus was leaving…. Next time we are doing the cab thing back to the ship!

The buffet at the Paradise Resort is exactly what Disney’s buffet is not. It’s plentiful and tasty and huge and open the whole time you are there. There is a great variety of cooked food, fresh fruits, grilled veggies, fajitas, etc. And the drinks of course are free. As a matter of fact DH played “tequila waterpolo” in the pool with some other adults, where a server dude squirts tequila into your mouth if you do something good. LOL. He liked that quite a bit!

So I cannot recommend this excursion highly enough. While the kids are younger (ie under 18), I think this is going to be our go to excursion while in PV. Pix coming when we get back on land. Oh, and the resort was sold out so if you didn’t have a ressie through a cruise line or weren’t a resort guest, they were not letting you in! I guess Christmas week (and Spring Break) are very popular so they limit the guests.

After the beach excursion, we came back to the ship without really stopping anywhere else. We were tired! There are a lot of cute little tents around the ship so my nanny and I wandered around for about 20 minutes and bought some little presents for our families, and then boarded again for the day. We actually had to shower and get ready quickly because we had the Concierge Party at 4:30. Todd came by to remind us, thank goodness, so we didn’t forget (like the spa appt the day before that I spaced on!). They served some nice appetizers in the Cadillac lounge, along with free open bar and Shirley Temples for the kids. I knew characters would come by so I had my camera. Unfortunately only Pluto did so I didn’t get a family shot with him because I thought Mickey or Minnie would come by too. Sigh. But I have a great one of the kids and one of DH and I. We enjoyed sitting around and doing nothing but chatting for an hour. Then we went to the Comedian/Ventriloquist show in the theater and again the dude was fantastic. Taylor had his puppets talking and did a great job entertaining the younger kids too. The audience participation part was hilarious with 2 adults and 2 kids “being” the various puppets while he put words into their mouths. It had everyone laughing in their chairs! Glad the kids got to see something other than a Disney production too. They had never seen a comedian before. 

After the show, the kids were starved so you guessed it, we went looking for food. SO the choices were, yup, the grill with fatty hamburgers and hot dogs and the wraps place. So they actually tried the wraps but really didn’t like them. Went back and got veggie burgers in an attempt to eat less saturated fat for once. We went back to the room and ordered the only sandwitch on the menu, some sort of turkey cobb thing that was soggy but at least healthier than the poolside options. DH and I wanted to go to dinner so while the kids decided to watch Mulan on TV, we got ready to go to Animators Palate.

I actually had not been to AP so I was so excited when I walked through the doors! The décor is just amazing. It’s kinda like a Disneyland ride. I took about 10 pix throughout the evening of the colors changing and so on. The only weird thing is that there are no windows in there and I was starting to feel a little claustrophobic by the end of the meal. But that’s just me and my love of open spaces (and balconies and views). I am thinking 99% of the people didn’t even notice or care. The food was okay but not nearly as good as Tritons the night before. DH went healthy after the buffet at Paradise Resort so he ordered veggie bean burger thingies that were terrible. We shared a plate of veggie stir fry on noodles, which was delicious. And I had the salmon in filo dough. It was good but not great. Somehow the salmon tasted “off.” But I feel fine this morning so I guess it was ok. ;)

After dinner we headed off to WaveBands again to see SpeakerBox. But we were pretty beat (and they were singing cheesy slow love songs). They had the love and marriage show planned after the band was done, which is something we never really liked on any cruise ship, so by 10:30 we were back in the cabin and fallin asleep. Good thing too given how rocky the night was! I kinda wanted to go to the Mickey Dance Party that was happening at 10:30 but I was so tired that I couldn’t imagine being able to keep to the beat even for one song! The ship was pretty empty as we headed back to the cabin.

So today is Cabo and our rescheduled massage (the one in the salon in a chair because they don’t allow any children under 18 into the spa so my poor DD could not do the couples massage with me)! I hope I don’t forget it this time! Then it’s Pirate Night. I am debating whether to order Palo into the room or go to Parrrot Cay, my least fave restaurant of the 3 for dinner. Eve, our server, says everyone will be dressed up and it will be a blast so we will probably all try to go. I actually have great costumes for everyone, so I am looking forward to wearing them (at least this once)!!

Oh, forgot to add, the laundry is a DISASTER on this ship! We had 2 loads to do yesterday due to my older DD all of a sudden becoming very vain and changing clothes like 3x a day! First off, there is no laundry on deck 8 so you drag your dirty clothes down one flight of stairs, across the ship to almost the very back! UGH. Then the laundry room is tiny and hot (remember my claustrophobia). You pretty much have to wait for the cycle to end because everyone is waiting for a machine so they just throw your wet clothes out. Then the darn driers do NOT work! We tried 3 and called maintenance and literally not a single drier was working. We did about 6 drier loads and then gave up and brought back 2 huge bags of soaking wet clothes! We had them laid out throughout the cabin all night. Today they are about 80% dry! I would highly recommend packing for 7 days plus some spare outfits because not only did it take me and my nanny about 3 hours to do this (she spent most of it in that little room because I could not stand it), but the machines are totally useless. Never again!!!

My only other gripe is the internet service. We have 100 free minutes as suite guests and let me tell you, I am on 40 minutes left after sending about 2 emails a day for the last 3 days. It takes about 10 minutes to load my gmail page!! Forget about uploading pictures or skyping or even facebook. You simply cannot get on or maintain a connection. I have been typing these reports on my laptop, uploading them to my phone and then posting them on DISboards using my cel phone and Verizon’s international data plan. I could not load DISboards at all for the last week on the internet the ship provides! So those of you planning on using it throughout the week, forget about it! Get a cel phone data plan and send quick emails that way. At least Verizon works great around the ports (although nothing works at sea).

OK, end of complaining! We are off to enjoy the dolphins and will post again tomorrow. It’s almost Christmas and we are in sunshine and 80 degrees! Where are you?  

Oh, and yes, the answer to the riddle yesterday was CORN! Way to go!! Took us a few hours to get that one. How about this one (from our server Eve): 4 men are sitting in a row boat in the middle of the lake. The boat capsizes and all the men drown. Not a single man gets wet. How is that possible?

What a fantastic trip you're having! Thank you for the live updates.

I know you mentioned Trent is your Asst. Cruise Director? Who's your cruise director? I'll be on the Wonder in a few weeks and am wondering who is filling in while Christiaan's on vaca.

Was christian going on vacation ? He was our cruise director on the wonder two weeks back.

I'm loving your trip report! We are on the 1/15 sailing and are doing the Paradise Beach excursion in PV also..it sounds great!! I do have a question though about the time change since we are doing an excursion on our own in Cabo. When the ship had everyone change the time an hour forward to CST, did the ship time stay that way while you were in Cabo, or did you have to turn clocks back again since Cabo is on MST (an hour earlier). Does this make sense :confused3

Thanks!!

I love the riddles...they were all married was my answer too.

Great detail in the report. We leave soon and your trip report makes me so excited.

We have been 1 hour ahead since our second sea day. So yes, youll be ahead on ships time the whole week. The wave phone shows the right time. It can be pretty confusing.

You guys got the riddle right! None of them were single. Our CD is Jimmy. We really only see him in the theater when he intros an act. Trent is amazing though.

Ok off to the spa for massage... Dolphin swim was a blast!

Merry Christmas!! Thans for taking a few minutes of each precious cruise day to update those of us at home!!

Cabo Day 2

What a glorious, warm and sunny day in Cabo today! The weather is perfect, the sea is a deep blue, and the sun is out in full force again.  Last night, we left Cabo around 7pm (gorgeous sailaway with all the sparkling lights in the distance) and then must have “parked” the boat in some cove because I heard the engines shut off around midnight. Then around 5am I heard them kick in again and we slowly sailed back to our spot in the protected cove next to Los Arcos. It was a calm night since I really don’t think we went “out” to sea.

So let’s see, what did we do yesterday. First was the dolphin swim for DH and I and the kids. My nanny got a free ticket to watch, which is not something they allowed in past cruises so I was happy she could come. Of course, they were selling the photos so absolutely no photography was allowed. We bought the whole CD because the kids were grinning ear to ear as they swam around with the dolphins. They learned commands and were allowed to swim around the (freezing cold) pool hanging on to the dolphins. They provided everyone with their own wetsuits and life vests, and since it was not optional, it made my youngest feel secure about swimming around with “Dolly.” We were in a group of 8 people total so another family was with us. Everyone got plenty of time with Dolly and we all left with big smiles! Then we wandered around the mall right by the port and bought a few little trinkets. We got back around 1:30pm and headed straight to the buffet (learned our lesson, LOL) and hade a pretty good lunch. The pulled pork and corn salad was very yummy. DH said the chicken and risotto was inedible. There was a baked potato bar too, which looked good but we weren’t in the mood. Desserts are also hit or miss, with some yummy mini fruit tarts but tasteless cakelets. Ah well. We didn’t go hungry. The kids got stuck watching Tarzan on the jumbotron by the pool so our afternoon flurry of kids club and other activities quickly vanished, but it is all for the better because it was going to be a late night for all anyway.

At 5pm, DD and I had our much awaited “port special” massage, which included 3 of about 5 things to chose from for $99 each. It was in the salon part of the spa since they told me no kids under 18 in the massage therapy rooms. We both chose a scalp massage, a shoulder massage and a hand massage. They set up 2 chairs for us and we propped our feet up and relaxed while the ladies did their thing. The view was fantastic outside the window as we watched the sun set slowly over the ocean and behind the Arches. DD looked like she was in seventh heaven and we both left feeling fine.  The only minor problem was that the lady poured an entire bottle of massage oil into my hair for my scalp massage, and when I got to the cabin I smelled like a giant field of plumeria flowers, “exclusively from Hawaii” as the maseusse told me. Soooo, I had to take about a 30 minute showed to wash the exclusive Hawaiian oil out of my hair. LOL. IT still smells a bit floral this morning, but hey, it’s all good.

So last night was the big Pirate Night event and we were all super excited to get dressed up. Lucky that this is a Christmas time cruise because right after Halloween, I raided the nearest Walmart and bought adorable pirate costumes for everyone (except for me, I looked like a cow in all those plastic costumes). So we got out our garb and got all spruced up and headed to Parrot Cay for dinner. I took about a bazillion pix of the kids but once again, the professional photo line was around the lounge and and back through the hallways, about 100 people deep. There was no way we were going to wait in line. Sooo, we just used my photos and went into the dining room. Parrot Cay definitely got a “redo”since our 2n cruise to nowhere. Gone was the whitewash and in were deep, tropical colors, gorgeous paintings of tropical scapes, and nicer chairs and tables. I was very pleased to see this change because that restaurant was seriously in need of renovations as of 6 months ago! Our servers were once again amazing and funny and entertained us all throughout the night. We did the Conga at one part when they cranked up the music and had everyone in pirate costumes dancing on their feet.  I had incredibly delicious ribs with some sort of sweet barbecue sauce and mashed potatoes! DH had a prime rib, as did my older DD. Younger girls had stuff off the kids menu (chicken fingers and pizza). Dessert for everyone was some sort of tropical raisin ice cream with caramel on top and chocolate sauce. YUMMM. We took our time going up to the party on deck because I had read on this board that it went on forever. So we got the lowdown about the fireworks being around 10:20pm and paced ourselves for dinner.

The Pirate Party on Decks 9 and 10 was truly a “blast”! Ha ha, get it? A blast? Never mind, I suck at jokes. We ran back to the room and changed into much warmer clothes because it was seriously chilly and windy as the ship was moving. We headed to deck 9 and saw the stage and all the Disney characters dancing to 80s and 90s music. We danced a bit but decided that Deck 10 would be better for the fireworks. Well, thank goodness we went up!! I don’t think you can see the fireworks from Deck 9 at all. The covering and the glass around that whole deck basically blocks it out. Our Concierge told us it would be directly above the ship, on the Starboard side, midship. So we headed in that general area. We could still see Mickey and Minnie and Stitch and them dancing on stage but now we could also see the night sky! DISboarders weren’t kidding when they said the characters dancing goes on and on. Holy moly, did it drag on. I think there was some plotline going on and something about Mickey rescuing people from pirates but you couldn’t make out what they were saying. They were just bopping around stage. The people next to us had been standing there for like 45 minutes, dumbfounded by the whole thing (and very cold). We were bored stiff after about 10 minutes! I couldn’t imagine 45 minutes of it. But right on time at 10:25 the fireworks started right above us and we had the best vantage point! Now don’t think this is a 4th of July production. The fireworks show lasts 1 song (an oldie but goodie, “I need a hero! I’m holding out for a hero till the morning light,” sing with me…). But it was right there above us and we thought it was very cool to be a part of it all. After the fireworks, many people left while we decided to go back down to Deck 9 and dance a bit. They had a DJ and were playing some hip hop (ever-dancable PitBull and Usher) so we all got into the groove. They set up a huge dessert buffet but just as we decided to head over there and grab some late night chocolate, my youngest DD decided to pass out. OK, not quite literally, but she just stopped dancing suddenly, sat down smack dab in the middle of the dance floor, and fell asleep!!! I seriously thought she had a seizure or something horrible. I had never seen her like this! OMG! I felt like the world’s worst mother. DH grabbed her and held her in his arms and we raced back to the cabin to make sure she was ok. Her color was fine but she was just OUT! We woke her up (to make sure she really wasn’t having some weird medical emergency), quickly brushed her teeth and put her and the rest of the kids in bed. Screeching hault to our Pirate Night evening out, that’s for sure! LOL. I was just glad she was ok. My older DD was so cute, she was like, “mom, should I call 9-1-1?” Anyway, it was a good thing because Cabo Day 2 was the Santa Maria snorkel at 7:15am (what the heck was I thinking when I reserved this????). So we all went to bed. Well, everyone but me. I was on a serious adrenalin rush from DD’s “event,” so I got up about 10x to check on her and make sure she was breathing. That’s how come I know that we eventually stopped the ship around midnight and just hung out in some deserted cove until 5am.

Rest assured, DD was good as new by this morning and the kids trekked off on the Santa Maria Sail and Snorkel with DH and my nanny. I gave myself the day off and didn’t book this excursion but am instead sitting out on our lovely balcony, staring at Cabo’s gorgeous rock formation and working on my tan. I also went up to the Cove, which is the adult pool area, and read my latest romance novel on my kindle for about an hour. Oh, and I ordered breakfast in from room service (another awesome suite perk – breakfast from Tritons to your table for free). So all in all, it has been a wonderful cruise and we are sadly leaving our last port around 1pm today and heading home.

The Santa Maria trip got mixed reviews from everyone in our family. The catamaran was much smaller so it was more intimate and felt like they were close to the water more than the Manzanillo snorkeling. They went right by the arches and got a great tour of the Cabo coastline. The waters were a bit more choppy going out and it took almost an hour to get out to the area. The snorkeling was in much more choppy waters so their snorkels got water in them, which my younger DD just didn’t appreciate. Basically, after 10 minutes, my 7yo was done. Older DD and friend, both almost 12, enjoyed it and saw lots of fish, including an Angel Fish (which our stellar room stewart pointed out is appropriate for Christmas day). On the ride home, all 3 kids slept in the sun. Cute pix coming…. Lunch was “better than the buffet on the ship” according to my kids, which I once again found hilarious. Free drinks for the adults so DH is a bit toasted right now! ;) I think he’s headed for a nap.

I probably won’t have internet to post our day at sea tomorrow but I will definitely post when we get back home on Monday. On tap for this afternoon is our Secret Mickey reveal party, which we are hosting in our suite, so it should be really great! We’ve had a wonderful group of FE givers and the Secret Mickey made the holiday sailing even more special. Basically, everyone bought 3-4 gifts to their assigned person for about $5-$10 each. My DD just got a Disney cruise t-shirt from her person and today, we get to find out who it is and thank them! I wanted Disney to cater some food for the party but Todd brought me the menu and it was $75 per person for them to come do a little finger food buffet in the room!!!!!! I think that is about 2x the cost of what I paid for my wedding reception food, catered by Il Fornaio! So we will be going to the buffet and loading up on cheese, canapés and desserts around 2pm and just putting that out for people to enjoy.

Kids have also been mentioning their respective kids clubs these last couple of days, so I think they will head down to deck 5 after. And tonight is Tritons for dinner, which is my fave of the 3 restaurants, with a semi-formal night getup. DREAMS is playing 3x today so I am sure we will catch that too. I see Speakerbox is back in Wavebands again tonight, followed by a cabaret act in that lounge with Scott Pepper, whom we’ve actually heard on the Mariner once! He was great. Then it’s 70s theme dance party in Wavebands so I think we are there, unless DH passes out before then! Tee hee. OK, off to the pool to catch some rays before we pull out of Cabo at 2!

Wow....We will be boarding the Wonder next Monday and are hoping for an upgrade to a suite. Can you tell me what movies were playing in the theater? I also take a port day to myself to do noting but sit and read and relax......that's what vacation is all about anyway's right? Glad you had a great trip!!

Last Sea Day

Waaaaaah! Our cruise is coming to an end! I can’t believe it. It totally snuck up on us! We have been having such a great time and looking forward to Christmas Eve and Christmas Morning and BOOM, next thing you know, they are giving you debarkation information and tags to put on our luggage. YUCK!

I think 8 nights is my ideal length for a cruise. Or maybe 10! 7 days seems a bit rushed and by day 6, you are already packing up. But 14 seems a bit long (did it B2B Coastal/Alaska 14n) and you want to be sleeping in your own bed again and eating your own home-made meals by around day 10. But that magical 8-10 days is the perfect length for me and my family, it seems. So I am very happy that we sailed on this wonderful Holiday cruise.

Our last sea day (actually 1 ½ days since we left Cabo around 2pm) have been really fun and relaxing at the same time. Today, the kids spent a LOT of time in the clubs and we did a lot of the shipboard activities. We learned how to make towel animals and how to draw Mickey, Donald and Pluto. Older DD played a LOT of Rockband at the Edge and younger DD spent some quality time with yours truly, enjoying the new toys that Santa delivered under our 2 foot tabletop Christmas tree. ;) There was a wildly popular magic show at the clubs that the kids adored, as well as cookie making and tie dye t-shirt making. The Edge had an awesome shipwide scavenger hunt to find Mickeys and my older DD couldn’t stop raving about it.

We did a great gingerbread decorating project at Studio Sea this morning, which was just a blast. I have about 1000 pictures of the kids making the houses and then slowly eating them. LOL. It’s the first gingerbread kit where you can actually enjoy the taste because it isn’t nasty like the ones you buy at Target. Also forgot to mention that yesterday we hosted the Secret Mickey reveal and had a very successful turnout. The kids enjoyed meeting each other and giving that final gift to their assigned person. I kinda wish we had organized a few more get togethers during the week because it was a great icebreaker for the young ones to get to know one another. But what I found on this cruise is that it was all families, and most tended to stick together for all activities. So we didn’t meet nearly as many people as we usually do on our other cruises. Everyone ate at their own tables and did all the activities with their children. There was really no “mingling” time.

The day disappeared in the blink of an eye. The premier of “War Horse” was a big hit with my nanny and DH although I skipped the 2 ½ hour movie to stare at the waves off our balcony instead. I powered through a great romance novel while enjoying the sounds of the ocean and the gentle rocking of the ship. And despite all the fun and games, I think we all feel much more relaxed than when we first boarded. All in all, I have to say this was probably our best Christmas ever, even though both DH and I missed our families a lot and wished they would have joined us.

We said good bye to the wonderful staff (and I mean wonderful, because I have been on a lot of cruises and while I found there were always one or two exceptional people who took care of us, this time every single person we interacted with was just superb, friendly and caring). We left lots of tips and ordered Palo to our room one last time tonight, although DDs both wanted to say good bye to our servers, Eve and Julia, so we ended up going to late seating anyway for a small meal at 8:15! Crazy, I know, but it was a Christmas menu and we couldn’t pass up the ham and chocolate log cake. ;)

We packed 7 suitcases stuffed to the brim with Secret Micket and FE gifts and all of our dirty laundry (sigh). We left behind our small Christmas tree for our room stewart, who was so sweet the whole trip. He said he missed his family so much (from the Philippines) and won’t be seeing them for another 2 months! Todd, our concierge, just found out he will be leaving for the Fantasy in 4 weeks, so he is going to be missed. As a matter of fact, it sounds like a good 1/3 of the staff will be moving over to the Fantasy for it’s first few months. Todd says they are meeting in late January and will be doing the Transatlantic to bring the ship to the Caribbean. He said they will still be wearing hardhats during that week long crossing! He will be missed because he is so young, full of energy and eager to please – just what a concierge should be! He really helped make our cruise special and I think it was worth every penny to have the concierge service on this special sailing.

So a couple of random observations and gripes (you know I always have to gripe a little). First off, there is NOTHING for the adults to do during the day. Unlike ships such as Princess and Royal, I think this line is all about the kids. Yes, you can sit out at the Cove pool and be away from the kids, but aside from that, literally there are no activities for adults. Unless you count the many, many sales pitches by the spa staff (disguised as educational events) such as “how to eat more but get a flat stomach” and “how to cure chronic pain with acupuncture.” But those little events always end in a product you can buy to get rid of your aches and fat and so on. Also, lots of DVC presentations to buy points. Again, sales pitches. If you look closely at the Navigator, it looks like there is a lot going on throughout the day, but in reality it’s these little “talks” made to part with your money. Or, you can pay for wine tasting, tequila tasting, beer tasting, margarita tasting.... I can name the bazillion different alcohol tasting events they had all week. Now those were a plenty, like 3 a day. But they were 1) pay events, 2) made for people seriously into alcohol. I can see maybe going to 1 during the whole week, but 3 a day??? Kidding, right? I think each of these events should be followed by a “Friends of Bill W” meeting. On Princess, we had lots of trivia and some scrapbooking/origami/bingo and other fun little things, that are not expensive to put on and really enjoyable for people who can’t get off at a port or want to just hang and relax. But Disney clearly makes no effort whatsoever to help those who can’t tender into Cabo for 2 days, for example. Yesterday the adult only section read “Games and Puzzles available at Wavebands” for like 8 hours! This is probably part of the reason why I felt like I just didn’t meet people on this cruise. The little daytime events help unite people with common interests and they were nonexistent. I honestly would never sail Disney unless I had kids. Not because it’s a bad cruise line, but because there is so much more on other lines that is offered for adults during their leisure time. As someone pointed out at our Secret Mickey reveal yesterday, the Edge is open until 1am every day but the adult music stops at 11 every night! The preteens are getting more entertainment than the adults who pay for the cruise. ☺

Gripe #2: the food is bad. Not Palo, but everything else. I know I have said this before, but think of your local chain restaurant, like Red Robin or Denny’s or something like that. Now take it down about 2 notches. That’s the food on this cruise ship. Again, if you have never sailed before, you probably think this is the norm. But I can tell you that the food on other ships is much better. Even on our one Carnival cruise, we had much better seasoned and cooked food. The only 2 seasonings Disney chefs used during this cruise were salt and pepper. Lots of it. When we asked for any slight alterations to the dish (no nuts on the sundae), they always said, “no, they are preplated.” Literally NOTHING can be custom ordered. You want to hold the scallops on your appetizer or want a side of steamed veggies instead of mashed potatoes? No can do. You would like extra potatoes – nope, not unless you order another full dish. (Unless you are in Palo. They cook everything made to order there. Too bad you have to pay!) Anyway, if you go into the cruise knowing this, then you will be pleasantly surprised when once or twice you get an amazingly delicious dish (like my fish at Tritons on day 4). Oh, and don’t get me started on the buffet hours, or lack there of. It’s just lame. See previous posts for details (I won’t waste your time on it again). Closes at 2pm never to open again until the next morning. But hey, you can have all you can eat burgers and fries over and over and over again.

Gripe #3: The ship is LOUD. We decided to call our suite (the Walt Disney Suite) the Rice Crispy Suite because it is constantly snapping, crackling and popping. As a matter of fact, as I type this at 11pm on our last see day, I can hear every single thing in the room vibrating, moaning and squeaking like an old car. You can hear everyone walking above you and people talking in the hallway. And if the ship encounters some waves and it actually starts to sway a little (like right now), the entire cabin is like a brass band. I think this is due to the age of the Wonder, and I just don’t see how they could solve this anytime soon. Bring earplugs!

But you know what, that is it! I really have no other gripes. Despite it being a sold out holiday cruise, I didn’t feel the crowds (except in line for photographs) and there were tons to do for the kids all day and all night. The staff was amazing and everyone in my family, even my shy and sometimes hard to please 7 year old, had a wonderful time. As a matter of fact, I can’t imagine anyone NOT having a great time. You really have to try to be a Grinch to not find something to enjoy. Of course it helped that we had pretty much calm seas and perfect weather and that our excursions, all through Disney, went off without a hitch. But I also think the little things, like the enthusiasm of the DISboarders in putting together gift exchanges, really made it “magical” for us.

I am sad to hear that the Wonder is being pulled from LA in December. If you are reading this and haven’t booked for 2012, I would book a cruise on her ASAP before it leaves Mexico forever and you are stuck having to fly 6 hours to catch the ship. It’s a real shame that the economy is the way it is because I would love to sail the Wonder again, maybe in a couple of years. We are booked on the Carnival Splendor for 2012 and then the Allure of the Seas for 2013, so it would be nice to add in another Disney ship in 2014, hopefully out of LA. Pixie dust for it’s return.

So with that, we will get home today around noon, cook (gasp), clean (double gasp) and do truckloads of laundry (gasp, gasp, gasp) and then post some pictures from our awesome cruise. Hope you enjoyed this TR! Happy Holidays! Katherine

SanDeeKath - Excellent trip report! Thank you for sharing!

The only thing that shocks me is apparently not being accommodated in the slightest regarding rotational dining room food offerings. It is true that most items are prepared en masse (complete with sauces) and they can rarely alter those offerings unless there are medical reasons and it is prearranged. But I have never had a problem on the Magic or Wonder with having my request for a different side dish or "no nuts" on a sundae granted, so that surprises me. If that has become the standard, the level of service is declining further than I thought.

I agree that there are few-to-none adult-only activities while the ship is in port. If I'm staying on the ship, I just accept that as time to read or watch a movie. However, I'm very concerned to read that adult music now stops at 11pm every night! On my prior cruises, Wavebands and Rockin' Bar D had DJ music after the live bands/adult events and was open until at least 1am. Is that no longer the case?
