Lightspeed ahead to a healthier you! April 2016 WISH challenge... all are welcome!

But for the rest of us... we have just this one planet....Earth.

In honor of EARTH DAY, please share three steps that you take to live a GREENER life.... and then tell us ONE NEW GREEN THING that you are going to start doing in honor of today's Earth Day celebration!!

And you might be surprised to discover how many
GREEN things are also better for your health! Less driving, more walking... better for the planet and for your health. More beans, less processed meats.... better for the planet and for your health. More water (in your refillable bottle, of course ;) ), less soda.... better for you and for the planet.

I've recently made the switch to using electronic boarding passes on my phone instead of printing them out at the airport kiosks or on my home printer :)

Disney disappointment today - we booked All Star Music for our October getaway for a total of $379 for 3 nights. More than we want to pay/can really afford but I'm of the "you can always make more money, not more memories" mindset lately, so that's what it is. On a whim I checked Dave's DVC Rentals last night and for the exact same price we could do a value studio at Jambo House for the same nights. We got SO EXCITED. Who knows when/if we'd ever be able to stay at AKL again? Deluxes are way above our means. We stayed up super late looking at pictures and weighing the options, and this morning decided to go for it. Wouldn't you know there is zero DVC availability for our dates. Ugh. I got so excited about the idea of a nicer hotel for our getaway that I even looked into doing 2 nights at a Mod instead of a 3 at a Value for the same total, but the rates have gone up to where 2 nights at a Mod would be $100 more than what we have booked for our 3 nights (the rates for the values have gone up, too, so we're paying $20 less a night than the current rack rates)... $100 is a lot and could go a long way at Food & Wine, plus it's an extra Disney day/night with our current reservation. So, total first world problems, we'll be sticking with our All Star Music reservation at this point. Happy to be in Disney no matter what, but definitely feeling deflated after being so excited about the chance to stay at AKL! I knew you guys would understand. <3

@courtneybeth I expect lots of croque glace photos. @DisPup75 I can't wait to hear what you think of them!! (if you haven't had them before)

I am so sorry! October through December are the most popular months for DVC and a lot of resorts book out totally as soon as they become bookable, 11 months out. It is a shame that they do not make that more clear on the David DVC rental site, that would have saved you some disappointment! I will keep all fingers and toes crossed that they will release some room discount for your travel dates!!

----

Successful day today: 28000 steps!! Tomorrow I need a bit of a rest day as on Sunday my plan has me running 8km. Eating has been very good, too, but I did splurge with one scoop of gelato tonight after dinner! Now, hopefully the scale is jumping down a little more.... Off to bed now, my legs are tired and want to sleep!

We recycle our waste and use color bins - black general, green recyclables as paper and red for glass. We don't eat much red meat or buy soda but that's all I got I am afraid

current weight loss - 3kg total! 75% of my goal, I have a chance to reach it!!!

Wonderful.... still plenty of time to his 100% !!

OMG We did it.. We are under contract!!! Last night my Hubs signed the counter offer - which they wanted $1000 more but still agreed to pay some at closing and then have the septic pumped before the closing.. they also moved the closing date out 5 days which landed on Memorial day so I think that will be adjusted to either Friday 5/27 or Tuesday 5/31 but either way we will be moving in just at the start of Summer!!! Yay Yay Yay... Thank you all for listening to me these past few month whine and moan about nothing working out when it was coming to house hunting.. we've figured out monthly payments should be about $80 more then now but we will own land and can do with it what we want! So we have vacation 5/9-13 and that will be spent cleaning out and packing some non essential items and working on a menu plan to use what we've got in our freezer/pantry to make the move lighter - granted it only 7/10th of a mile from where we live now but ya know new place new food Haaa..

Happy Earth Day all.. we recycle our paper and cardboard, a few weeks ago we bought new travel coffee mugs so we could stop using paper ones .. our new thing will be when we move in our new house is no more paper plates or cups because we will have a dishwasher, not me or the hubs but a real one! haa oh the little things. Oh and I will be able to feed the birds/squirrels/rabbits all the veggie and fruit ends.. I have missed that for the past 5 years (can't throw those out on my lawn in the mobile home park!) Happy Happy Friday and WI .. YOU ALL are doing fantastic.. just coming here and reporting is half the battle.. Michelle

WOOHOO, Dancing bananas, Jumping Jellybeans.... and all those things!! HUGE congratulations!! I'm so excited for you! And I agree.. new house, new food! You will have enough other stuff to worry about packing up.... eat from the fridge/freezer/pantry for the next few weeks.... it will help the budget AND the moving!!

Check in

I lost 2.4 pounds this week. I am at 108% of my goal.

I am beyond excited. At this point I will below my goal of 135 pounds by Disney. I have 5 more pounds to go and we leave in 43 days. The shirt I bought in September on our trip should fit really good by the time we go. It was a little tight when I bought it and I will be under the weight I was then.

OH MY GOSH!! That's WONDERFUL!!!

8 more working hours until vacation!!!!

Happy Earth Day! Three things I already do:

1. DH and I share one very fuel efficient car and we try not to drive it very much by using public transportation to get to and from work. As a native Californian, this was a hard adjustment for me. Driving is my birthright! We also do as many errands as possible on foot. Living only walking distance from a grocery store helps a lot!

2. I drink a lot of water and I avoid using disposable water bottles unless I am truly desperate. I have a collection of reusables that go everywhere.

3. I avoid plastic food storage and disposable containers. My mason jars and other glass containers are sometimes a bit heavy but they last forever, never leak all over everything, and I think they keep leftovers fresh longer.

My new green thing.... My relationship with the UPS man is a little too hot and heavy. I'm trying to cut down on the amount of cardboard packaging that I generate.

Yay!!! Congratulations on being in escrow. I'm so happy for you!0

I use glass as well and on the rare occasion something gets broken, it goes into the glass recycling bin instead of the trash. I'll tell my UPS-employee DH about your "relationship!

We try to be green in our house -
1) We recycle (paper, plastic, glass)
2) We don't buy bottled water. Admittedly, this is mostly for the trash around the house factor. I'd find empty waterbottles everywhere; so a couple of years ago we bought a fridge with a water filter and that was the end of the water bottles
3) We use real plates, cups, silverware for all meals. This drives my mother in law nuts. She can't believe we don't use paper products for the majority of our meals. She babysat for us last weekend and I made sure to go out and buy paper plates and plastic cups for her because I wanted to avoid an argument. The unused plates and cups are still sitting on the counter and probably will hang around for her next visit! I just hate the trash that's generated from them. It seems so wasteful when you could just wash them and reuse.
4) This year, I bought these "bento" boxes for my kids lunch boxes. I cannot tell you how many plastic bags I have saved over the course of this school year - at least 6 a day, I would venture. One of my most "green" purchases ever that has the added benefit of portion control.
http://www.yumboxlunch.com/

I'm not a big gardener, so have never composted. However, our community just started curbside composting, where you compost and just put your weekly compostables it at the curb. I may try it!

Love all of this stuff! And truly?? Your DMIL expects you to use paper for everything? Wow.... we use almost NO paper.... not even at parties! I use cloth napkins daily, rarely use paper towels, and only keep paper plates on hand for emergencies (like when my kitchen sink was out of commission for a few days). I've even stopped leaving paper plates and cups for the men when I'm gone because they didn't use them. Guess I've trained them well!

Happy Earth Day everyone! I split out recycling, although I always feel like I'm doing it wrong. This includes washing the cat food cans. I'm sure the recycle guys think I'm a cat hoarder... The kids eat thru around 5 of the little cans a day, so in two weeks (recycle is picked up every other week) the recycle bin is full with cans. Seattle also has a food composting program, food scraps and yard waste go in a separate bin, and I'm pretty good at that. I'm also good at recycling old clothing, household goods etc. a lot goes to Goodwill, but my 'hood also has a community garage sale day every May that I've participated in for many years. Fortunately This year it's while I'm at WDW, so I don't even have to contemplate doing it. We also have a couple "Buy Nothing" Facebook groups, where you post stuff you are getting rid of or in search of. I'm collecting stuff in the basement and then will do a mass posting during the summer to get it all cleared out. Possibly my current biggest recycle project is my trailer... 2 years ago I bought a 1957 Cardinal "canned ham" trailer that was being "rebuilt" and I would just need to finish it off and then could go Glamping. Turns out the previous owner covered stuff up and did shoddy work, so she's just been sitting in the driveway. This week I offered her to some friends who have done a couple frame up rebuilds and they are going to come get her after I get back from vacation. I am so excited she's going to get the love and attention she deserves, and isn't ending up in a junk yard.

The serious two week vacation countdown has kicked in! I got a mani/pedi last night, but will need to get another right before I go, my hair appt got rescheduled to tomorrow morning, most shopping is done so the focus shifts to getting house and yard work taken care of... And getting just 2 more pounds off this body of mine!

Love all of this... especially the camper story. I've been secretly DYING to buy a small tow-behind camper to refurbish for YEARS.... but the thought of buying someone else's "mistake" keeps me away from the project.

I've lived in So Cal nearly my entire life - I rarely go to Los Angeles because of the traffic! Comparatively, Anaheim is a breeze to navigate!! There's an In-n-Out burger off State College and Ball Road (about 3 miles from Disneyland) -- head there so you're near the park! :)

I miss living in Anaheim. Cost of living went up due to the Urban redevelopment... Disney has spent a LOT of money to increase the perceptions of "nice area" in the last 15 years. From Anaheim Stadium to the convention center... it's all new construction. We used to live in the apartments across the street from the stadium... take a drive when you're there and see the pretty area (and the ugly areas they're trying to cover up. You'll know where Disney has dropped the dollars!)

Is In-and-Out worth the time/money? DD and I have SO LITTLE time at Disneyland.... we arrive on a Sunday evening (probably by 5pm) and leave at midnight on Tuesday. We bought 3 day Parkhoppers so as not to miss a MINUTE in the parks. But we could be persuaded to hit an In-and-Out Sunday evening on our drive from San Diego to Anaheim. Would it be worth losing some precious park time??

Disney disappointment today - we booked All Star Music for our October getaway for a total of $379 for 3 nights. I do totally understand. I've done the same thing to myself in the past.... decide that I will splurge on a night or two deluxe.... and then chicken out on spending the money. Honestly, I have NO problem being at a Value.... as long as I'm at Disney, I'm SUPER happy!! I'd take 3 night Value over 2 nights Mod (or one night deluxe) any time!!

************************

Hey friends!! I have a few precious minutes to catch up with you all before I start tonight's Chat shift:surfweb: .... then as soon as I'm done we head out the door:car: to head to upper NY state to check out ONE LAST COLLEGE! And of course, as of this moment I am officially on APRIL SCHOOL VACATION!!:yay:

Remember, it is time to start reporting your PROGRESS for this week! I'll get it posted on Monday evening.

TTYL.............P

:dancer: Congratulations!!!! Just picture your fridge/pantry in your new place stocked with all your new healthy foods :D Oh and a dishwasher is just heavenly - you will love it.

4) This year, I bought these "bento" boxes for my kids lunch boxes. I cannot tell you how many plastic bags I have saved over the course of this school year - at least 6 a day, I would venture. One of my most "green" purchases ever that has the added benefit of portion control.

These look good - have you put watermelon in them? does the liquid that seems to seep of the watermelon in lunchboxes leak between the seals/compartments? Its just that my son takes watermelon just about everyday its his go to fruit. And if its in their bad sideways does it really not leak between compartments? I looked at the website but feedback from an actual user is better lol.

This drives my mother in law nuts. She can't believe we don't use paper products for the majority of our meals
Wow - almost every meal :confused3 we only use them for kids birthday parties or bigger get togethers - even at Christmas we made the move a few years ago to some really nice Christmas patterned china its just nicer that way.

Here is my 3:

We recycle into our recycle bin everything we have that is on the guidelines to go in it.
We all have water bottles that go with us everywhere (well mine does - and the kids then drink out of mine when we are at the shops) I also worked out that I can get a cold refill by slipping into the parents room, they have one of those built into the sink cold water taps.
We donate our outgrown clothing/toys/tennis rackets etc to goodwill.

Free! I'm free! I'm free! Of course the metro has delays so I haven't actually left for home but work is OVER!

The croque glace is first on the treat list. But second is the macaron ice cream sandwich. Any reviews on that?

This will be my first croque glace!

I totally get the deflation. That hurts! But I have to put in a plug for the values! I won't stay anywhere else - I love the ease of entry (mere feet from the rental car! And not all that far from the busses!); the ease of a quick breakfast (navigating the Mara or the Beach Club marketplace for a yogurt and cereal is exhausting); the extra money for croque glaces! I'll admit I spend absolutely no time in the room when I'm not sleeping or in the shower. But I still love the values!

I do love my in-n-out but I also grew up in California and I need my cheeseburgers. Without any extra time, I would probably skip if I weren't, well, me. That said, if you are driving back to the airport, you usually have to leave kind of early to allow for traffic. If the traffic gods are kind, you could use the slack for a delicious cheeseburger. I know there is one on Sepulveda Blvd across the street from LAX. Wouldn't shock me if the San Diego has one close by as well. On the money factor, skip the fries, they aren't that good. But do ask for the burger to be mustard grilled. :)

But croque glacé comes pretty close.

So excited!

Here's what I've found works - watery things (pickles are what my kids love that seem to exude water before they get eaten) get a little press and seal wrap over that particular compartment to ensure no leaks. Anything even slightly thick - ranch dressing, apple sauce, yogurt - doesn't need anything. It really does do a nice job of sealing. The other tip when you need a good seal is to not overfill any of the compartments. If you pile one too high, it messes with the seal of the other compartments as well.

These were definitely money well spent. I don't cut fruit into fancy shapes like the photos, but my kids seem to enjoy smaller portions of more things.

Thanks :-) There seems to be a local shop that stocks them here on the coast - so I will go for a closer look.

Joined the gym with my bff today. We did some treadmill and I did some upper body lifting. She went and tried out the elliptical for a minute. hehe she had same problem I do on that machine. Those muscles are way out of shape and lacking the muscle to push our overweight bodies. So she moved to exercise bike while I tried them out. I'll be ready to kick butt in May. :) So I have a local, close friend to be my accountability buddy. She joined back on the 5. Her Dr had told her she really needs to lose some weight to reverse some problem she's been having medically. I have the same thing with prediabetes and hypertension(which we both also have dealt with for years).

Good morning!! You get what you pay for, right? Stayed at a super economy hotel last night and the free wi-fi stinks, so I'll be skipping a QOTD today because I'm not even sure that this basic message will upload!! Off to a hot shower and much needed coffee! I'll catch up with you all later!......P

Check in - I started the month at 274 and I'm currently at 261 3/4 lbs. My goal was to lose over 14 this month, so I'm currently at 88%.

Wanted to get a run in after work yesterday and although I wasn't planning on it, I ended up running 3.1 miles. It was my first time outside with a solid wind (15/20 mph) and let's just say I'm not a fan of running into the wind. The good news is I still dropped my time - now at 38:31. Now I'm adjusting my goal for my first race and I'm trying to get down to 35:00 - hoping that the adrenaline and the other runners will help kick in a new gear I haven't found yet.

Pamela, You are down to the wire so let me make up a QOTD for this group.

This is a shot I took at DHS (or whatever they are called these days)

What are some of the evil things that set you off your plan for eating?

I am all for the values. We have stayed every where from AKL to BLT to WL to Poly but the values are always there for us. We love POP right now.

QOTD the thing that sets me off is at a sit down meal with my family. I don't eat or drink as much as them so I always end up over eating. I am also the quiet one who doesn't cause trouble so I have to keep my mouth shut and that also sets me off.

Example My sister has 2 daughters and I have 2 sons. She has been very involved with her daughters weddings. She was upset that her dd2's future mil wanted to come to look at wedding dressed. Well DUH I wanted to go too since I am her Godmother but I wasn't invited. At least with ds1's fiance I was able to go with her. I wanted to scream at her to understand what the lady was going through but I kept my mouth shut. I wasn't able to go with ds2's finance but she sent me a picture as soon as she got it and I may be helping her with a bolero jacket for the church ceremony.

Right now my sister (my twin is on my %^&**( list). For our 60th birthday last year she got a reservation to Victoria and Albert. She invited our younger sister who turned 50 to go but not me. She also invited her husband's brother and his family but not me. I would have turned her down but it would have been nice to be asked.

Off to get ready. I am taking a class this afternoon that combines coloring and embroidery. It should be fun

Checking in...it's been a tough week for me! I hurt my back...just twisted in the wrong way which has led to spasms in my back and left arm. Grrr. It's getting better with rest and muscle relaxers but I haven't exercised most of this week which is just super frustrating. I am almost done with my Whole 30, however, and I have been really good about sticking to the plan so I am proud of that! I did cheat and weigh myself (I couldn't take it anymore!) and I have lost 13lbs since I started 27 days ago! I am gonna try to get back to my regular exercise on Monday and see how my back feels. I guess that puts me at 50% for the month.

Weigh-in today: lost the weight I gained last week so I'm back up to 75% to goal! It wasn't the best week that I would have wanted but the week before was TOM so that's probably why the weight gain was so high and why I was able to lose it all this week.

I have my first race of the year on Sunday! It's a 4 mile run. I can't wait to see what my time is. I'm hoping for 11:30 mile pace because my 4 mile run about 4 weeks ago was 11:49. I feel like I've gotten faster but it all depends on the course and how hilly it is.

I only have 1.5 pounds to get me past these darn 180s!
