Lightspeed ahead to a healthier you! April 2016 WISH challenge... all are welcome!

Good morning and happy MONDAY to everyone! Welcome to your QOTD for April 11, 2016!

Well.... I don't know about you, but Monday mornings are the HARDEST morning to get up! No matter how much rest I've gotten over the weekend, the alarm is always too loud and too early! :yoda: Like Yoda there, I'd like just 5 more minutes (and then 5 more minutes and then.... well, you understand).

Sleep.... it is a magical thing.... it feels SO GOOD and it is GOOD for us!! If you don't believe me, just read this article on how sleep relates to weight loss.... (yes guys, I know it is from WOMEN'S health.... sorry :rolleyes1)
http://www.womenshealthmag.com/weight-loss/sleep-weight-loss

How much sleep do you actually get every night (on average)? Do you think it is enough? It not, what are you doing to try and get MORE quality sleep? Have you ever noticed a connection between sleep and weight loss or other health issues?

My amount of sleep has really changed since I retired. When I was teaching the alarm would go off and we would be up at 5 am and I would be on my way to work by 6:15. Now We are getting up at 6 and I don't leave if I have to until 7:30. I have been trying very hard to go to bed at 10 and then reading for a while. I do try to get to sleep by 10:30 and I am usually up about 5:30. I am trying to get back into some stretching and strength training from 5:30 to 6. So I am getting a solid 7 hours of sleep. I do wake up during the night but I have been trying to repeat a mantra to get back to sleep and it seems to be working.

I get between 7 and 8 hours per night, consistently. I do keep early work hours which means I get up around 5am which is sometimes a challenge. As I've mentioned previously I take 5HTP to calm my brain so that I get quality zzzzzz's and I Have to be mindful of no caffeine past midday, else I'll toss and turn. I think my biggest sleep challenge is my cat Whitehall who was food issues from being dumped/abandoned when she was a baby. First breakfast is around 2am, and I've found just getting up is better than the love torture that ensues if I don't. There's nothing quite like a kitty butt in the face and a tail whacking you across the head to get you going.

Ok quick vent: I am so sad and stressed this morning.... I developed an ear infection over the weekend and went to urgent care last night to get it looked at. I have antibiotics now and the doctor didn't rule out flying on Thursday yet, but YEESH! I am so worried that I won't be able to go on our trip. I felt better this morning after getting the medication in my system, but that ear still feels weird and not right. The good thing is the antibiotics have three more days to do their job and everyone seems hopeful that I'll be ok, but I'm just a wreck over this. :-( I did tell DH, worst case scenario, when we land in Vegas for the first leg, if the pain is too much we will rent a car and drive to Disneyland and then drive back cross country (we've always said we would do this one day, but that just pales in comparison to Tokyo.....) Ok, got to keep my spirits up and be positive that I'll be fine. Vent over.

YES!!! I totally see a correlation between my sleep and my weight loss. On my UP, I can select to see Sleep trends versus Weight trends and it's a perfect inverse. When my sleep is up, my weight is down. It's amazing. I also find that if I'm feeling sick, sleep always makes me feel better and mend quicker. I usually get an average of 8 hours per night. I'm a brat if I don't get my sleep. On weekends, I will do 9-10 hours and it's glorious!
Hope your ear is better soon!

Hello! Totally late joiner but I need some accountability! I've been on here many times over the years and for some reason my scale is up about 10lbs since last month :scared: so I need to switch gears and figure this out! I think I just never returned from Spring Break!

I've just had a few weeks of 'I really don't care and I'm going to eat whatever I want whenever I want' - and it's showing!

I journaled my food today and that was helpful. I just need some focus so I'm popping on back here. I don;t have tons of time but I try and read what i can and post when i can.

My positive today was I did an hour on the treadmill AFTER work which I was so tired from (on my feet all day/walking/lifting). I plan on doing it again tomorrow on my off day before I go visit my mom. There will be lunch involved so I need to get my head together and plan before hand.

Anyway - just a quick hello and hopes to regain my focus!

Hi - looking forward to seeing you around the thread :D

Double post but I'm now in full on panic mode. My TA just called and said that there was a miscommunication between himself and the wholesaler and our trip now needs to be paid off next Saturday instead of the 15th of May. :scared1: Now I'm scrambling to sort this out. We are short about 2000.00 for the trip. Ugh.

MY MOTHER IS AN ANGEL! She's offered to lend us the money and we just have to pay her back by the 15th of May for the original Paid in full date. I'm back on my high!

PHEW! Thank heavens for Moms!!

Welcome back!!!! Your absence was noticed and you were missed!............P

Good morning and welcome to your QOTD for Tuesday, April 12, 2016:

Drinks.... specifically adult drinks...... Most of us enjoy them from time to time. Even in the SW galaxy, it was fun to hang out with your friends at the "local watering hole" (or maybe it was sketchy... weren't they looking for a bounty hunter or something??). But how to do this and stay on plan?? Many (okay, MOST) adult beverages are dripping with calories! How do YOU keep an evening of fun with friends ON PLAN??

QOTD: This is SO hard for me. This weekend was really the first time I felt like I had a handle on it. I try to go out later, drink vodka sodas (with a splash of cranberry maybe), and then cut myself off. The cutting myself off part can be hard especially when starting early. I really try to nurse drinks. I also usually know when I'll be drinking and I try to eat super healthy that day (maybe even squeeze in a workout). But booze is my downfall for sure, and while I may only drink once a week, it's such a challenge because then I want to eat lol

Now you're speaking my language!

I'm normally a beer guy, but since I've started this back in January my consumption of beers has been in the single digits. I've switched to Captain and Diet Cokes which is much lower in calories, but I have also been trying to cut back on the diet soda so I can't win! If I know I'm going to have a couple beers, I just know I have to eat a little lighter throughout the day and limit the carbs. I also switched to drinking Ultras, which are lower in the carbs/calories than my usual Blue Moon.

I don't drink so I have never had an issue with this. I am happy to be the DD. I have a few theory's on why I don't drink. First, I am not a fan of the taste or the smell (beer). Second, I don't like the feeling of not being in control of my body. I had a buzz once and that was good enough for me not to do it again. and Third, My dad is an alcoholic and I think there has always a fear that I would be one too. So I just stay away. I even tried not to have alcohol at my wedding. My husband and mom won that battle.

I do have an issue with pop though. I crave it all the time. I do try to keep it down to a can a day or less. I can go without drinking it but I have an issue swallowing pills so if I need to take Advil or something I take it with pop because it makes it easier. I also try not to buy any. If it is not in the house I won't drink it. With having my son's birthday party a few weeks ago, I have had left over pop at the house. I do log it into MFP to make sure I stay under my calories.

It's easy for me, I don't have any friends.
When I do drink, I always limit myself to 1-2 drinks. Mostly because alcohol and I don't get along too well.
(Except at weddings, when I've been known to have 3-4 glasses of wine)

Great question! It's a little easier for me to answer because I take a free day each week when I don't count my carbs/calories so, the easy answer is, I drink on Saturdays!

But, if it's not Saturday (like my Thursday evening book club or the random Friday or Sunday night out), I try to (1) save calories/carbs from the day (can anyone say salad, very little dressing for lunch) to apply towards drinks and (2) I make every drink count. If it's not my free day, I am much more likely to have a fancy martini or frozen drink. They may have a lot of calories, but I enjoy them so much because they are SO delicious and decadent. I'd rather nurse one fancy drink over the course of the evening than have two or three light beers (even though I also love beer).
