Let's Talk Remodeling

I''ve been waiting for you! I was anxiously awaiting your opinion on it all! Thanks again for all of your suggestions & help!:worship:

I hope you get it done before you are old & gray! Too late for me, I am getting old & if not for hair color would be gray!;)

I helped? Wow! If I did, I didn't realize it! Well... it's beautiful, so I must have some really good taste!

Most definitely you helped!!! I'm surprised you didn't realize how much! First of all, just seeing some of the projects you've done & others that you linked or posted was a great help. Then if not for your suggestion I probably wouldn't have chosen the crema bordeaux granite over the juperano bordeaux. And I absolutely love it! It's really gorgeous & goes so well with everything else! So yes you helped a lot! Again a big THANK YOU oh wise one!:goodvibes

Shovan and Ranatra, your bathrooms are BEAUTIFUL.

Confession time, you know we only partially remodeled our masterbath. Guess what we are thinking of doing now? Yep the rest of it. :scared1:

Well of course! You put up a new towel bar didn't you? ;)

I'm cracking up, because I don't even remember mentioning the granite. But hey, I'll take praise any ol' day, so you're welcome! :rotfl:

Just think of much less you'll spend. Or think of the quality items you can buy, because you don't have to buy as much. :thumbsup2

Actually I was thinking about how little work *I* need to do, since it's so small that DH can handle all of it on his own. :rotfl:

Well if it wasn't you, :confused3 now I'll really need to heap praise on someone else! ;)

But seriously, your pics & postings did help!

Finally getting my countertop in today:cool1::dance3: . Tomorrow the sink will be reconnected. I feel like I've been living in the 1800's. I've had to fetch water from the upstairs bathroom in a pitcher to use in the refrigerator and to give to the pets and fill the coffee pot every night so we can have coffee in the morning.

You're right! See? It's even better now! :rotfl:

Somewhere there's a peeved DISer not feeling the love. :rolleyes1

Boy do I remember those days! I HATED not having countertops. I don't know why we didn't just get some plywood to stick on top of the cabinets. We weren't smart enough for that apparently.

At least my house is a one-story, but I hated trekking to the bathroom to wash something and to get water. It's all worth it in the end though!

I also need some advice on refinishing stained cabinets with paint? For those of you who done it, Can you tell me exactly what steps you did & what type of paint did you use?

Also any advice on color for the cabinets here? I thinking either very dark, like black or very light cream? This is my hall bath I plastered the walls a few years back. I know it's bright, but after all the plastering & then several layers of faux painting, I was determined to like it.
Here's some pics:

We can't afford to change anything else in there right now. ( I mean one day the gold toilet & tub has to go! ) But the cabinets look really shabby & I thought painting them would be an inexpensive interim fix. And something I could do myself. As you can see the rest of the room has a light stained (golden oak) doors & molding. Which will also stay right now, because if I paint all that, then we'll run into the hall, which leads to the foyer.....

I painted over my stained cabinets in my kitchen. I followed advice, down to the paint color, of a woman's kitchen I had been drooling over on Gardenweb.

Here is the link to my kitchen from Gardenweb: http://finishedkitchens.blogspot.com/2005/07/smbnobles-kitchen.html

If you look down at the comments, you'll see where I posted what I used to refinish the cabinets, including the primer and paint. Make sure to check out Reno_Fan's kitchen too. That poor woman just moved and remodeled ANOTHER kitchen three years later, and it is absolutely gorgeous!

I swear, I will remember my advice this time. :upsidedow

I wouldn't do cream, unless you're planning on replacing your counters... and then you're verging on towel bar syndrome territory.

How 'bout a darker color, like cherry, or even black, and try your hand at glazing? Or you could do a finish like mine, where you paint one color and then another on top, rubbing off some of the top color, letting the color underneath come through, in a distressed way. My black vanity, has a deep red underneath.

And I don't know what you're talking about referring to your bathroom paint. I think it looks great!

This doofus can answer! YES! ;)

Thanks, I'm going to get it & try it on a few things in the house. My DD also wanted to change a few door knobs in her house but not have to bother with changing the hinges. So I told her about this. I wanted to show her your pics, but they're not showing up. Maybe your photobucket is full or just acting goofy? Would you post or link the pic of your vanity & sconces again?

Thanks I will go check it all out!!!:thumbsup2

Glad you like the paint! It's a lot bolder & brighter than I expected when I did it. But it really has grown on me. It's just that in the pics it shows how bright the color is & it surprised me to see that. When I go in there though, I'm happy with it.

I was wondering the same thing with the cream, probably would be really tough to get the right color that would look okay with counter. I was thinking/hoping maybe a black with a red or cherry underneath or on top. But doing that is kinda scary! I go read all about what you & others over on Garden Web have done. Thanks again!:goodvibes

I don't know why that's happening. I tried showing my sister my travertine (on her computer, at her house) and everyone's pictures were showing up, but mine. I ended up showing her yours, because it looks so much like mine! She loved your bathroom, BTW. :)

I have one report I have to get sent off, and then I'll retake them. I must've deleted them, because they're not in my photobucket account anymore... ohhhhh, duh... I bet that's why they're not showing up! Good Lord, I'm an idiot.

I got a new camera, so new ones will look better anyway, and as an added bonus, my paint won't look like baby crap. Give me an hour or so, and I'll get them uploaded.

Thanks! Please don't rush yourself to do it! I don't think DD will be going home from work this evening & redoing hinges! ;)

I'm glad your new camera is working for you! I still haven't figured mine out! Just to turn off the flash, I have to put it in manual mode, now I can't figure out how to focus it! I feel old & stupid! :sad2:

Oh, I have no clue how to use my camera either! I got it in December, but so far it's just been used for work.

When I take pictures of the handles, it looks blurred without the flash, and washed out with it. Again - it's the photographer. The first picture is with the flash on, the second is the flash off, the third is the sconce (with some dust - you've gotta love that!), and the last one is the light ceiling fixture. Make sure to tell her that I also aged them with black paint.

As someone who is faced with the very daunting task of removing white paint from a gorgeous antique hutch, don't paint the cabinets unless you are going to replace them! I can't emphasize that enough.
A darker stain would be gorgeous. Not black, but a darker brown. I absolutely love your lighting in the room btw.
