Lesson learned. Need more days in Disney!!! Aug 2010 (NEW 1/20-COMPLETE)

Montreal Pt.2

The subway was open alright, but the next train to arrive was in 28mins! I should've checked the actual times guide! I'm so used to trains coming in 2-3 minutes that I forgot how infrequent it would be at 5:30am.

So Andrew and I sit down on a bench and just wait. Now comes the infuriating part. At 20 mins until the train is bound to arrive, a train actually shows up. I'm thinking, "YES, they're early!" We get up, grab our things and walk towards the platform. But wait, what's this? Why isn't it slowing down? Then ZOOM, it passes right by us. It doesn't stop. 19 minutes until the next train. What is going on???

So we sit back down and continue to wait. A few minutes later, another train shows up and we think, "Surely this one will stop for us. What are the odds of two trains within 5 minutes of each other whizzing by?" So again, we get our hopes up. And again, we were shot down. This time, the driver even HONKED at us as he passed by! It was like he was saying, "See ya, suckers!"

So at 10 mins before the scheduled arrival of the train, we see another one heading towards us and we don't even bother with getting up. THIS one however actually stops for us! Hallelujah! :worship: We're on our way at 6am!

We got to the bus terminal at 6:30am (JUST AS PLANNED-this is also a Death Note reference) to wait for our 7:30am bus. We couldn't start lining up yet because people were still in line for a 7am bus, so we just took a seat inside the terminal and waited.

On our way to the terminal, we knew we would be passing by a McD's and I had planned to grab some breakfast for our trip there, but...it wasn't open. I thought they opened at 5am for breakfast! Those liars! I'm so hungry.

So instead, I decided to check out the little food stand at the terminal, expecting outrageous prices (and getting them). I bought a 6-inch ham sandwich for $5! At least the coffee wasn't so bad. $1.75 for a large. I also bought a bag of chips. Hunger was taking over my inherent cheapness.

Andrew was already falling asleep.
DSC01060.jpg

Hey Andrew, we have to go get in line.
DSC01059.jpg

It's 7am and there are a lot of students in line. Not surprising because it was spring break for a lot of universities and even though it takes longer to get there, it's MUCH cheaper than taking the train.

While in line, we see that there are two buses going to Montreal. The regular old coach bus, and the brand-spanking new two-level bus with free-wifi! Unfortunately, they start loading the old one first and Andrew and I are only about 30 people behind in line. The good news is, we were able to find seats next to each other on an already half-full bus! I guess there are a lot of pairs going because solo people always choose to st by themselves if they can.

I get settled in and turn on Fanta (my ipod) to listen to music while Andrew instantly falls asleep. I really envy how he can fall asleep at the drop of a hat(why do people say this anyways? Why would you be sleeping when hats are dropping?) I have a sleeping problem that makes it really hard for me to fall asleep and stay asleep. I can sleep anyWHERE, but not anyTIME. It's a curse.

The weather looks nice so far, but it's supposed to get colder. Looks like we're heading into the clouds.
DSC01064.jpg

After about 30 minutes, I take these pictures. Andrew's completely out.
DSC01062-1.jpg

I'm still awake.
DSC01063.jpg

And I have McDuff in my lap. He got all dressed up for his first trip to Montreal! You can also see my newly done nails here. I love this blue.
DSC01061-1.jpg

McDuff's sunglasses are so cool. And they stay on without a string or clip or anything. He's wearing the scarf I knit for him and the cardigan my bff bought for him.

So I'm just sitting on the bus, staring out the window as it drives by. I notice that behind the clouds, there's a large ball of light in the sky. For a long time, I wondered if it were the sun or the moon. I've seen the moon in the sky during the day before. It's very round. But it's never been that bright. Could it be the sun? And sure enough, the clouds drift by and I'm blinded by staring at the sun. All I could think of was, "I never knew the sun was so round." and "I shouldn't look at it again to confirm it's the sun."

We continue to drive past a few cities and all of a sudden, in a dried up and dead cornfield, I see something large impaled on a pole. Picture a flag pole with no flag. Now, picture a red car impaled on this pole. Add some large black spider legs to the side. What the h**k was I looking at??? It goes by too fast for me to take a picture. It was unreal. It wasn't a miniature car either. A regular-sized car. A red spider-car skewered by a pole.

By the way, I was listening to my Glee playlist compiled of the 5 Glee CDs I have. Gawd, I love GLEE songs.

We pass by a large sign for an "Adult lifestyle community" which begs the question, "What does THAT mean?" What constitutes an "adult" lifestyle. Is it a nudist community? If so, then they picked a terrible place to build it. Is it a swingers community? Are there such a thing? Is it even legal in Canada? Or maybe it's just a regular community completely made of adults and if anyone has a baby, that child is sent out to be raised elsewhere and is allowed to come back when they turn 18. I wonder what it's like in this community.

I was getting kind of sleepy, so I tried to recline my seat, but it was stuck. I guess my recliner was broken. At first I was ok with that, but my neck started to hurt real bad after nodding off for a bit.

Suddenly, I notice that we're coming up towards Kingston. I've taken this very bus to Montreal before, but always got off at Kingston to visit Andrew because this is one of its scheduled stops. So I prepare myself to get off the bus soon and finally stretch out my legs when.....we drive by the town. What? Well...I guess since this is a Montreal-only bus, we're not stopping here afterall. Bye Lessa.

The weather is also getting pretty ugly. We're driving into a blizzard!
DSC01065.jpg

Oh, I hope it isn't snowing in Montreal!

TO BE CONTINUED.

Yay you started your Montreal mini-TR! I hope the snow doesn't get any worse. Then again, this is February we're talking about...

 I got a shout out!

I love your bus ponderings. I too wonder about this adult lifestyle community. Hmmm.

Of course you get a shout-out! I was planning on taking a picture of the bus station and saying, "Hi Lessa!" on my TR. We DID stop here on our ride home though.

This was definitely the more interesting of the bus rides. I haven't taken the bus past Kingston in a long time.

I wondered about the Skewered car mmmmm!!!

That was the WEIRDEST thing to see. Was it some sort of a scare-crow? Did it work? How did it get up there???

Yay you started your Montreal mini-TR! I hope the snow doesn't get any worse. Then again, this is February we're talking about...

YOU'RE BACK!!!! Reading your TR now. I have this urge to finish my mini before you finish yours....but that's not fair, you were in Vegas longer.

Yeah...the weather was so unexpected. It dipped down way farther than was predicted.

We played until around midnight and came up with the great idea to NOT SLEEP. We were taking the 7:30am bus and I had planned for us to wake up at 5:30am anyways. We weren't very tired at midnight, so instead of going to sleep for 4 hours, why not just stay up? We would be sleeping on the bus anyways.

So we proceeded to game into the night. By 2am, I couldn't take it anymore and went to sleep. My siblings and Andrew continued to game until 5am when my sibs finally headed home. I woke up when I heard them leaving to say goodbye to them. Andrew has been up all night! I made us some coffee, made sure we had everything we needed and headed out into the dark morning.

It cracks me up how much you and Andrew remind me of myself and my DF. This sounds like something we would do. I would have also crashed and fallen asleep. Guys are so silly sometimes:rolleyes:, but we love them anyways.

Andrew was already falling asleep.

You two are adorable. AWwww.

DSC01059.jpg

Poor Andrew, he does not look like a happy camper. I think it's so cute that it sort of looks like he was sleeping with McDuff.

Awww McDuff. I love the scarf. Nice work Yuki! I'm a knitter as well and dabble in crocheting every now and then. He also looks totally rad with the aviator shades. That bear has some style!!:cool2: :rotfl2:

The weather is also getting pretty ugly. We're driving into a blizzard!
DSC01065.jpg

dun dun DUN!!!!

Yuki, you've perfected the art of the cliffhanger. I'm on the edge of my seat. Will Yuki and Andrew get trapped in a frozen tundra? Will Yuki run out of Glee songs? Will there be more weird sightings on the side of the road? I'll just have to wait and find out.

Haha, yeah we're so much alike!

You two are adorable. AWwww.

Aww, thanks! I have an obsession with taking pictures of sleeping people...

Poor Andrew, he does not look like a happy camper. I think it's so cute that it sort of looks like he was sleeping with McDuff.

He carried McDuff for much of the trip, in his jacket with McDuff's head popping out. Andrew said he made a great scarf.

I should've taken a picture of that!

I heat crocheting is easier cause you can do it with one hand. I only know how to knit scarves :thumbsup2

Omigosh, what will happen next??? You'll find out soon enough.

Hahaha, you are awesome

Yikes! How did I miss your last two updates?:confused3

If I got that kind of attention from Jack, I'd probably just stutter, too.;) In fact, I'm feeling a little shy to take our pic with him on the ship:rolleyes1

I'm thinking you did stand out at Monsters, but they were thinking "what IS that?" :rotfl2:

When you entered the Mickey house with the proper greeting, did anyone say, "dozo?"

Omigosh, what will happen next??? You'll find out soon enough.

Hahaha, you are awesome

:lmao: Sounds like you are on the edge of YOUR seat to see what happens next! :lmao: I am looking forward to more - not lovin the tundra shots - looks like here lately.

I love how dapper McDuff looks for his trip!:thumbsup2

HEY EVERYBODY!!! :wave2:

I'm SOOOO sorry for this super long absence. I was really busy with final exams and papers and just totally neglected this and everybody else's trip reports!!!

I have a week's break before I'm back in school again. I hope to be able to put up a few updates this week. I really need to finish the Montreal one so I get on with the regular programming.

For those of you who didn't notice, this TR got moved to the Completed boards!! Thanks so much to Jen for letting me know she noticed this.

It's great to be back guys!:grouphug:

Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing about not being picked on at Monsters.

It would be VERY cool if someone DID say "dozo" haha

I need to make McDuff more clothing. He's been wearing the same thing for weeks now.

Waiting to hear more of your adventures! :)

Glad you're back!

:woohoo: Yuki is back! I`m glad all your exam stresses are over with. Looking forward to hearing more about your Montreal trip.

Hi Karin!! I had a pretty good Easter. Just spent time with my family.

Yeah, I didn't even know a TR could be moved from a few weeks of inactivity! I though it took longer than that! Well now I know.

Hi Yuki ! Guess what I got Judy for Easter !!!!A Bobble Bottle and refill filter from Target!!!!!

Haha, AWESOME!!! I still need to make a trip down there to buy some for my family. Did she like it??

Montreal Pt.3

Around 10:30am, we reached our first pit stop (potty break as I called it) in Morrisburg!
DSC01066.jpg

We still haven't figured out whether we're in Quebec yet or not. My guess was we weren't. This was too far from our knowledge of cities. Most of the people on the bus bought something to eat, but Andrew and I just went back to the bus earlier.

Which turned out to be a GREAT idea because I found out my recliner was working after all! It was because the person behind me somehow prevented me from reclining when I tried to earlier. I'm sure she didn't need the leg space, she wasn't that tall. So I reclined and just ENJOYED it.

It was snowing when we took our break and it just continued to snow. Look how bleak the weather scenery is.
DSC01067.jpg

Andrew's a lot more well rested after his nap.
DSC01068.jpg

After some more time, I noticed a sign for Moulinette rd. It sounds French, so we must be close to Quebec. If it had said "rue Moulinette", I think I would've thought we were in Quebec already.

We entered the province around noon. There were great big signs to take pictures of, but I failed to take one... The bus was going too fast! I also noticed a bus stop right at the on-ramp for the highway. Coool.

When we entered Montreal, I tried to take a picture of ANY sign of the city, but failed yet again. I need to be better prepared for these! Before our trip, I had studied the map of Montreal over and over, so at one point when we were still on the highway, I was able to point out where our hotel was to Andrew based on where we were. Yeah, I'm pretty proud of myself. Unfortunately, Montreal didn't seem to want me to be, cause we got lost A LOT.

We got the bus terminal at 1pm, which is an hour and a half earlier than the expected time!
DSC01069.jpg

The station was very nice, with lots of colourful signs. Here's Andrew taking out some money from the ATM, with McDuff firmly tucked into his backpack.
DSC01070.jpg

McDuff was very snug.

We found the subway with no problem and bought a 3-day transit pass from a ticket machine. We went up to the people in the booths, and they don't sell tickets there... There was also only ONE ticket machine, so the line was pretty long. We thought it was pretty odd.
DSC01073.jpg

The station we were at was one of the main terminals.
DSC01074.jpg

I'm not sure what compelled me to do this, but I took a picture of the direction I was going.
DSC01075.jpg

Their subway system was extremely easy to understand. It was also very well spread out. It was close to many locations and we used it many times in one day. The subway stations were also very pretty! They had murals in a lot of them, but I forgot to take pictures of some of them. I don't know if their subway is older of newer than the Toronto ones, but it's definitely MUCH better.

I had an errand to run before heading to our hotel. My mom wanted me to deliver something to an uncle that worked in Chinatown so that's where we were headed. I printed out a map provided by Frommers.com which was very helpful during my trip. What I loved was that the streets were actually closer than it seemed! We didn't have a lot of trouble finding Chinatown because we had to head to the pier and it was pretty obvious. We had planned to take the subway, but it was only a short walk away.

It was FREEZING COLD though. It wasn't snowing, but it had dropped to way below zero degrees (um..I don't know what this is in Fahrenheit). I was completely unprepared. I had packed lighter clothing because those liars at the Weather Network told me it would be warm this weekend. I should've known better.

When we exited the subway close to Chinatown, a bus had pulled up outside it, but we didn't need it so we kept walking. As it pulled away, a guy came running out of the subway and after the bus, patting the side of it so the driver would stop, but it kept going. He threw this duffel bag AT the bus before it drove away. Crazy!

We were able to drop off the package and they insisted on taking us out to lunch, but we wanted to drop our stuff off at the hotel first. We exchanged numbers, but we ended up not meeting up again. It was very nice of them to offer to treat us though.

Andrew saw this cute figure in the window on our way out of Chinatown (which is just 2 streets...it's pretty small)
DSC01076.jpg

We love the roof of this Holiday Inn.
DSC01078.jpg

Walking around here definitely brought back memories. Remember, I only have memories of being in Chinatown. I even recognized some of the bridges we used to drive over. It was nice to get a glimpse of nostalgia in a city I barely know.

The mural on wall on the left is GORGEOUS. I regret not taking a better picture of it. It had representations of the different cultures in the city.
DSC01079.jpg

One of the many one-way roads in the city.
DSC01080.jpg

We had also planned to subway to our hotel, but decided to just walk it. It was pretty close. Thanks to google streetview, we found our hotel with no problem at all!

We stayed at Le Dauphin. Is that French for dolphin? I never found that out.
DSC01081.jpg

Andrew went ahead to check in because we paid for the room with his card.
DSC01082.jpg

The lobby was pretty nice.
DSC01083.jpg

DSC01084.jpg

We found out later that day that we were right across the street from a building that connected to the closest subway station from the inside. This was definitely a great location.

And here are the pictures of our room!
DSC01085.jpg

The bed was THE MOST comfortable bed and pillows we have EVER slept on. It had a thick extra blanket, unlike the thin little sheets we're used to at other hotels. Throughout our stay there, we had to be careful not to get under covers or we would fall asleep.

The bathroom was very pretty.
DSC01086.jpg

The shower was pretty cool too. It didn't have a door, but it was kind of tucked in behind panels of glass.
DSC01087.jpg

Here's the front door from the back of the room.
DSC01088.jpg

McDuff is enjoying the bed.
DSC01089.jpg

I never got a chance to use the coffee machine, which is a huge shocker for me. This room came with free water bottles.
DSC01091.jpg

They also had free wifi, and a computer here we can use!
DSC01093.jpg

This is our view from the window. We could see Chinatown from here.
DSC01094.jpg

We also saw the roof patio of the building next to ours. It must be really nice in the summer time.
DSC01095.jpg

On top of all that, they served a complimentary hot and cold breakfast in the morning. Now, can you guess how much all of this cost?

A whopping....$70/night!!!

This place was VERY highly reviewed online. The price was INCREDIBLE. We were more than satisfied with our room and our stay here. The service was amazing. It was in a great location. I would definitely stay here again. I also highly recommend it to anyone planning a trip to Montreal. Hotel Le Dauphin Centreville Montreal.

We got settled in, Andrew took a shower and I just enjoyed the room and freshened up a bit before heading out to find food. We were getting hungry. One more thing I needed to do, was to get directions from the internet. Before the trip, I had compiled a list of places to eat based on recommendations and reviews. I wrote down their general location, but I realized I needed better directions.

So after making a new copy of my "restaurants" sheet, we headed down to the lobby, hoping they had a printer in their little business center, but they didn't. We asked the front desk if there was a printer I could use, and they let me behind their desk to print out my two sheets! I thought that was very nice of them.

And finally, at 4pm, ON TO FOOD!

But will we actually get it???

To be continued...

That's an incredible hotel for that price. I was floored when you told me the price. They even GIVE you a computer to use in the room?!?! That's insane! Wow, the next time I go to Montreal, I'm looking up this hotel! Great update Yuki! I'm excited to see what food you get. Oh, and about the subway...ANYTHING is better than Toronto subway because well, frankly Toronto just didn't get it right when they built it.

Your trip to Montreal looks like so much fun so far! The hotel looks great! Definitely a budget-price for much much more! The rooms looks fantastic and I can't believe you get a computer too! Sooo convenient. Will keep that hotel in mind for when we visit one day, and I'd really like to! Do people speak French mostly or do they welcome English as well?
