Monday 22 February 2010 - Day Five

Eric didn't wake up until 5.45 am this morning, which was a big improvement, and he managed another hour in bed with us until Andy got him up at 6.45 am. They had some breakfast and then woke me up with some froot loops at 8 am. We got ready and set off for Disney's Hollywood Studios (which in real life I still can't help calling MGM) at 9.40 am.

Eric fell asleep in the car but we managed to transfer him into his stroller without him waking up. We headed to Guest Services first to make an ADR for the Play and Dine meal at the Hollywood and Vine. We managed to get an ADR for 1.05 pm. Eric had just started to get really interested in the Little Einsteins before we came away so we were hoping he would enjoy it.

We had a look round Villains in Vogue, got a FP for Toy Story Mania and then looked round the Muppets shop, which was where Eric woke up. We bought Eric some Minnie Mouse cookies in there and some Mickey pretzels for us and then went to queue up for the next showing of Playhouse Disney Live on Stage. We had some snacks whilst we waited and Eric enjoyed watching the monkeys Ooo and Aaa on the TV screens. We got seated right at the front on the left hand side (you just sit on the carpet). Eric liked what he could see of the show and particularly the songs he knew from the TV shows. We didn't understand though why all the characters were puppets which were pretty hard to see for us adults seated on the floor, let alone the children. I think it should either be proper seating with puppets, or full size characters and sitting on the floor.

We did the Little Mermaid show next, which Eric loved, especially the stars and bubbles at the beginning. He didn't even flinch at Ursula - I wondered if she perhaps isn't scary if you don't know to be scared of her?

By now it was time for our ADR so we went over to the Hollywood and Vine where we were seated almost immediately. I had a couple of cokes with my meal and Andy had diet coke. There was, as usual with Disney buffets, a lot of choice and we ate bread, salad, fruit, sandwiches, cheese, dill pickles, steak, corn bread, green beans, pasta, chipotle and lime chicken, garlic smashed potatoes, rice, key lime tarts, chocolate mousse, chocolate chip cookies and vanilla and chocolate ice cream. The food was average but I thought having sandwiches was a nice touch at lunchtime, I loved the corn bread which I had never tried before (!) and the key lime tarts were particularly nice.

The characters at the meal were June and Leo from the Little Einsteins and JoJo and Goliath from JoJo's circus. This was, without a doubt, the most magical time we had on this holiday. Eric had an absolute ball and we were so pleased we had decided to go. I know the character meals are expensive, but the delight on Eric's face was priceless. The restaurant wasn't too busy so the characters came round several times and every now and again they would dance in the middle of the restaurant and Eric went to join in once he had seen it a couple of times. He was particularly taken with Goliath (even though he had never seen JoJo's circus) and Leo who spent so much time with him. I have to think that they save the very best character performers to work in here as they were all excellent. Leo somehow managed to ask me Eric's age and to communicate that he was surprised he was so young. I thanked him before we left and he rubbed me on the shoulder which I thought was lovely. We eventually managed to stop Eric chasing the characters round and get him to leave! He didn't eat very much but he sure had a good time. Since we got home, we now tape JoJo's circus for him every night (for some reason it is on at 11.45 pm!) and he watches it the next day when he's having his tea. We usually have to watch each episode at least three times!

It was time to use our FPs for Toy Story Mania next. This was a first for us and we had a great time. Eric sat on my knee and he kept shifting about so I thought he was scared but Andy said it was because he was trying to get to my gun so that he could join in! I liked this much better than Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin, probably because I was much better at it! Just an aside, but does anyone else think that the name of the game "Buzz Lightyear's Flying Tossers" is hilarious, or is it just me?! I was very pleased with my score of 98,900 with 38% accuracy.

We watched the Block Party Bash parade next which was another first for us. We enjoyed it and thought it was a novel idea to have it stop and get everyone dancing for a few minutes before moving on but it was a bit frustrating waiting when you could sort of see it happening. One of the lady dancers pulled Eric out of the crowd to dance with her, he wasn't phased at all and did just that, it was very cute.

Next stop was pictures and cuddles with Handy Manny ("Han"). Eric was so excited to meet him.

After this we went over to Anaheim Produce on Sunset Boulevard to get E some grapes and a drink.

I wanted to see the Prince Caspian exhibit as I had enjoyed the original The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe one. I enjoyed this too and was amazed at how they got the stone pictures on the wall to change from pictures of castles to pictures of Prince Caspian's face. Magic.

We went back to the Playhouse Disney area to look for more Little Einsteins and found June and Quincy. They were amazing with Eric and even took him on a little walk round the area! He enjoyed that so much and again wasn't phased at all, we just couldn't believe it.

Last stop of the day was MuppetVision 3D. Eric seemed quite happy with this one even though he wouldn't wear the glasses, of course.

It was raining as we left the park. We stopped at the dining window to make an ADR for the Plaza in MK for lunch the next day. We tried for the Crystal Palace but there was no availability. We drove to Downtown Disney to get some tea at the Earl of Sandwich. Me and Andy shared an Earl's special club sandwich with salt and vinegar crisps and Eric had some of a cheese and tomato pizza sandwich.

We looked round Pooh Corner (which should really be renamed as it has so little Winnie the Pooh stuff in there any more) and Andy bought a pair of Mickey Mouse pyjama pants. We also looked in Mickey Mart and I bought Kari a fridge magnet. It was pretty cool and said "How I'm feeling today" on the top and then had pictures of Disney characters with different expressions and a little box to move around depending on your mood.

We also had a quick look in World of Disney before driving back to the villa. Eric fell asleep on the way home and pretty much stayed asleep whilst we put his pyjamas on and put him into bed. Very exciting busy day for little chaps.

Andy went out to Walmart to do some shopping and we both had a bath. We drank Bud Lites and watched some rubbish TV before going to bed.

This day cemented DHS as our family's favourite park. Eric would quite happily have spent the day running from one character to the next and back again.
