My family and friends and I were having a discussion on weather more expensive laundry detergent works better then the cheaper ones. To be more specific, Is Tide worth the money?
Right now I use Purex and have been using it for the past 5 years and I am very happy with it.
But I always here people rave about Tide. Am I missing something? Is Tide that much better?
It costs twice as much as Purex!
Please help me out? I don’t think my clothes are dirty.

Also,
I use ‘Baby All’ for my DS, should I be using Dreft. I just think Dreft costs too much.

If you are happy with the way the detergent you use works then keep at it. Personally i wouldnt use anything except Tide but thats because my kids clothes get really badly stained and i cant get them clean without it.

When my kids were babies i went back and forth between Dreft and Ivory Snow. I dont care for regular All I just dint think it works that well so i would never try that brand.

For your baby--If your baby does not show any signs of skin irritation, I don't know why you would have to switch to Dreft.

As for Purex, we have been using that for a long time, and last time I bought detergent, I tried Cheer, and decided it was no better. If there is something that I think might stain, I use Shout or Spray N Wash. I can't use Tide because it makes me break out something awful.

I like to use Gain because I love the way my clothes smell. I've used Purex for quite a while, but I always seem to need 2 capfuls in order to see suds. With Gain, I only need 1. It costs a little bit more than Purex, but my clothes look and smell much better.

I'm the same as MJ. I've tried a few different detergents, but now only use Tide & Tide w/bleach. I also only use Downey. I have a teenage son who gets his clothes really dirty, as does my DH who installs audio & video equipment. Tide is the only thing that works for their clothes. Even using Tide, I have to occasionally use Zout for tough stains. You said you're happy with Purex though. If I found a detergent that I liked just as good as Tide but was much cheaper, I'd stay with the cheaper one.

When my first child was born I called Proctor & Gamble's consumer line to find out about laundry detergents. Turns out the baby detergents are just the basic detergent with something added (fragrance, fabric softener). I stuck with whichever fragrance free detergent (better for delicate baby skin) was on sale cheapest.

My sister uses Gain & I love the way her clothes smell. Unfortunately, I have sensitive skin & it really irritates my skin. I noticed DisneyCowgirl said Tide does her that way. It's very odd how chemicals react differently on different people.

I haven't noticed much difference with laundry detergents.

However I have noticed the dishes are much, much cleaner when I use Cascade complete versus any of the cheaper dishwasher detergents. Bummer. Cascade is expensive.

If Purex is working for you, stick with it. I personally use Purex AND Tide. My DS9 get clothes too dirty for Purex, so for his and DH clothes I use the tide. Use the Purex for towels and my clothes that are stain-free. :dog:

Thanks for the info so quick!!

I also only use Cascade Complete 2in1 actionpacs
I always use a coupon out of the Sunday paper for $1.00 off two.

We have to use he for our front loader washer. Tide was the only he I could find until a month ago I found Cheer he. I like it better than Tide, maybe I'm sick of Tide's scent. I do use All baby for the baby. But when we go on vaction to our timeshare I buy whatever cheap brand of detergent I could find. It works fine and the kids get dirtier on vacation too.

Hi! Gotta use Tide...I know I used Whisk for awhile but I only buy Tide with bleach now. I also use only Snuggle softener. For spot stains, I use Greased Lightning - It gets anything out even if it's dried!! I know I use expensive detergents, but I am hooked and can't seem to try anything else. Plus, DH refuses to have any "off" brand or generic stuff in the house. He works for Kraft and won't let me "hurt" his or any other high end company by selling out and purchasing cheaper stuff!

We use Tide too and clorox2, that makes a huge diference.

I read recently though that the Costco brand (Kirkland) was the top rated laundry detergent out there.

We use the electrasol tabs from Costco.

You don't have to use he for front load washers. I have had a front load washer and dryer for 3 years now and only bought one bottle of he. You can use any kind at all, just cut it in third. You can really save a lot of money doing that versus using he detergent.

I am starting to understand now. Purex is fine for my DW and I now, because our clothes don't get that dirty. BUT, when my DS gets older and is out all day playing in the dirt and mud (like I did :rolleyes1 ) I should seriously consider using Tide.

Thanks everyone

Has anyone with allergy issues found a cheaper brand than Tide Free? All's hypoallergenic formula isn't for my DD. :rolleyes1

I break out to anything BUT Gain so I stick with Gain.

I have a seven year old boy and a six year old girl and I use whatever is cheapest, plus presoak the really bad stuff in Oxyclean (I use generic Oxyclean, too).

It wears out before it gets unwearably stained.

just my two cents...
Consumer reports says that kirkland brand is actually the best for your buck. Although Tide w/ bleach, Tide cold water and Tide HE all rate higher than Kirkland Signature Ultra. But it costs less than half that of Tide per load. Tide runs from $0.31 - $0.37 per load and Kirkland is $0.14 per load. But I personally use Gain (I just think it works better but I grew up with my parents using the big bucket generic brand they sell at Sams or Costco). Gain was rated #14 @ $0.28 per load and Purex #22 @ $0.14 per load. I agree with most other posters. If it works for you, keep on using it. :teeth:

Yes, "Consumer Reports" did a report on laundry detergent and found Kirkland brand detergent cleaned clothes just as well as Tide.
