People forget that guns can and often are used in defensive purposes also, estimates very widely from a hundred thousand on the low end to a couple million on the higher end annually. But it’s something to always remember when a call is made to do something to save lives, that those actions might cost lives on the other end.

I do believe guns save innocent lives, but not as many as they take.

And yet the requirement doesn't stop people without insurance from driving.

It doesn't stop all, but it stops some. And I believe this is right:

Here's the problem... everyone is looking for a single reason. I dont think thats the case. It's multiple issues. There is no "magic bullet " that will prevent these.

No one single fix will stop every horrible thing from happening, but a lot of small changes, from a lot of different angles, will chip away at this horrible problem. Just because "perfect" isn't possible, doesn't mean we shouldn't strive for "better."

What the world needs now
Is love, sweet love
It's the only thing
That there's just too little of

Be around for your kids, put the devices down and take the time to be with your children. Know what's going on in their lives...I'm going to play a game with my kid right now, then later see a movie with her since it's raining. AND be thankful to see another day with my family. Peace be with you all...Have a wonderful weekend

What does that mean in the context of the pp's reply?

If one innocent student's life taken is too many, then the life of one innocent person not able to defend themself with their gun is too many also.
Simply, more good people are killed by guns than bad people, fewer lives would be lost if there were fewer guns. The statistics in other countries back this up.

So, innocent gun owners aren't good people, or they aren't good enough people for you in order to feel their lives are worth saving?
Forgive me if I don't want people like you deciding whether or not my family is good enough to protect with guns.

I said nothing about gun owners, I’m talking about those who use guns to harm others.

Compared to 22 other high-income nations, the U.S. gun-related murder rate is 25 times higher.[12] Although it has half the population of the other 22 nations combined, the U.S. had 82 percent of all gun deaths, 90 percent of all women killed with guns, 91 percent of children under 14 and 92 percent of young people between ages 15 and 24 killed with guns.[12] In 2010, gun violence cost U.S. taxpayers approximately $516 million in direct hospital costs.[13]

Gun violence is most common in poor urban areas and frequently associated with gang violence, often involving male juveniles or young adult males.[14][15] Although mass shootingshave been covered extensively in the media, mass shootings in the US account for a small fraction of gun-related deaths[16] and the frequency of these events steadily declined between 1994 and 2007, rising between 2007 and 2013.[17][18]

There is no talk in congress about taking away your guns

Yet.

The longer and harder the "gun rights trump all others!" people fight the "reasonable gun control" people, the less reasonable the restrictions will be when they are finally imposed.

The longer this goes without some concessions, the worse it is going to be when the hammer finally falls.

I don't have a problem (as I've stated before) with responsible, reasonable people owning guns. I have a problem with deranged people being able to purchase a gun so easily.

Either we stop that (or attempt to stop that) or within 20 years, enough children will be needlessly murdered that the hammer falls and there's an all out gun ban. That's my prediction, anyway.

No one wants to take your guns. We just want our kids safe. Eventually, though, while gun owners keep clutching their guns saying "nuh uh, not taking these" and refusing to concede to minor restrictions, everyone else is going to get tired of burying babies and demand an all out ban.

It happens all the time, people miss the chance to act appropriately, then overreact in an attempt to do damage control.

Don't forget, most Americans want sensible gun reforms. They don't want to stop you from getting a gun, they just want to make it a little harder, make it a little more thorough to prove you can handle the responsibility.

This "conversation" was started because of your reply to someone who pointed out that guns are also used by many as protection.
The gun owners are protecting themselves against those who use guns to harm people.

3 Men- People forget that guns can and often are used in defensive purposes also, estimates very widely from a hundred thousand on the low end to a couple million on the higher end annually. Me- What does that mean in the context of the pp's reply?

The point is that any action to limit law abiding citizens access or use of guns because they feel it will save innocent student's lives could result in innocent lives being lost as well.

I fail to understand why we cannot make it a priority to make our childrens' schools SAFE. First and foremost, before anything else is changed or outlawed or whatever, we just need to make them safe. There are ways to do it. We keep the White House safe. We keep pro football stadiums safe. We keep concert venues safe. Why on earth can we not make our schools safe?

Metal detectors, armed campus police, fences, whatever. We need to do whatever its going to take to make them safe. From guns, from bombs, from whatever comes next in the way of threatening the lives of children.

Surely this is something that we as a society can agree needs to be done and after that, we can all go back to arguing about gun control.

You can't make schools "safe." Well, sure you could fence them, lead kids in and out through a single entrance or two, have metal detectors, etc, and it might give the "appearance" of being safer, but that's all it is. Harden a target and all you do is move the perimeter out. At least at my kids' high school, there are three major entrances/exits. And 2000 kids exit within 5-10 minute period. All at the same time. Hundreds of kids. Easy target.

And until we make our kids lives important enough to come up with that money, its going to continue. Really sad that we do not value them more.
I think it's really sad that we don't value our kids enough to make our schools better....make teaching the priority, pay teachers properly, etc. It astonishes me that people instantly jump to spending billions of dollars on school security, but argue for decent wages and properly equipped classrooms, and suddenly it's all "I pay enough taxes already." SMH.
